Orchard 1974
오챠드1974 2호점 Ochadeu 1974 2-hojeom Orchard 1974 — a wood-fired pizza and pasta room off Hwanghak market in Sindang-dong.
Other Asian · Jung-gu, Sindang-dong
Data as of · Published ·
An Italian restaurant on the ground floor of a brick building in the lanes behind Hwanghak market, six to ten minutes' walk from exit 4 at Sindang. The name means orchard, and the shop spells it two ways in Korean — the sign and the Instagram account use one, the map uses the other. The kitchen is open, and the wood oven inside it is where the pizzas are baked. Pasta, risotto, wood-fired pizza and three sharing platters, from ₩16,500 for the aglio e olio to ₩32,500 for the mushroom-and-steak salad. The licence dates from January 2017 and the room is about 150 square metres, which makes it one of the larger places we have read. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.
What sets it apart
- Lunch comes with a drink and no charge for it — an americano or a honey lemon tea, nothing alcoholic. Nine writers were given one, and six of those took the tea. It is meant as the thing you have afterwards, but ask and it arrives with the food: three writers asked, and all three got it early. One got caught up in the eating, left hers half-finished, and was asked on the way out whether she would like it wrapped to go or made fresh. Ordered on its own the tea is ₩3,500.
- The posts disagree about the portions, and the disagreement tracks what people ordered. All three who call it small are talking about a single pasta or risotto: four forkfuls and it is gone, says one; another loved the risotto and wished there were more of it; a third reckons a pizza, a risotto and a pasta between four is not quite enough. The six who call it generous had a platter, a pizza or the salad on the table too — too much for two, bring a third; we nearly ordered three dishes and two filled us; the pizza is genuinely big. One regular has settled the matter for herself: the pasta is small, so she always orders the mushroom-and-steak salad beside it.
- The kitchen is open, and the wood oven inside it is the thing people write about most. Eight say they could see into the kitchen from their table; six of those single out the oven — the fire in it caught one writer's eye the moment she walked in; another watched a pizza go in on her way back from the toilet. Three take the visible kitchen as a guarantee of cleanliness. Six tell you to order a pizza whatever else you do, and one came only because, as she puts it, this was the one place in the neighbourhood baking them in a real oven.
- It is big — thirteen say so, and four of them say "bigger than I expected", which suggests it does not look it from the street. Only one writer counts the tables: seven or eight seating four. Others describe a mix of twos, fours and sixes with larger group tables beyond that. One saw a party of twelve at a single table; another came with eight and took two. Six posts record coming in a group — work dinners, club dinners, a birthday — two describe a date, and one writer came with a baby. Two call the room quiet, one of them the same writer with the baby, who says the calm let her eat at her own pace.
- The pasta this place sells most of is the hot one. Eleven writers ordered the cream pasta with green chilli, garlic scapes and sliced steak, and nine of them call it hot. Mostly they mean the chilli keeps the cream from cloying — eleven posts say this kitchen's cream sauces do not sit heavy — but two mean it plainly. One singles out the chilli itself; another simply says it is properly spicy; a third describes her boyfriend taking a bite and reaching for the water, over and over. Three writers had never met garlic scapes in a cream sauce before. If chilli is not for you, there is plenty else on the menu.
- Eight posts advise booking, and five of those writers booked. By phone or through the usual app. The window seats have to be booked — one writer wanted one, was told they go only to reservations, and did not get one even though she had booked. Six write about that window: a long banquette under a wall of glass, and the light that makes the photographs. If you want it, say so when you call. One writer could not get an answer on the phone and walked in a week ahead to book in person. Another ordered in advance as well, and the food was on the table as she sat down.
- Five posts describe the service, and every one of them is specific. A woman who came in with a baby in a sling was given somewhere to lay him down, and on the way out was handed a bouquet made up from the flowers they had been arranging for the room. A writer leaving her drink unfinished was asked whether she wanted it wrapped or made again. Others record sweetcorn left out on request, nuts left out on request, a steak taken back to be cooked a little longer. One writer concludes that how a place treats you sometimes decides what you think of it. Nobody writes about being treated badly.
- The posts split on price: four say it is not dear, two say it is. One of the two admits it is not cheap and that she cannot come often — and in the next breath says she wants to come anyway. The other calls the anchovy pasta poor value. On the other side, one writer answers the complaint head on: she had read that it was expensive for what you get, and found it ordinary for an Italian restaurant. Nothing has gone up in the two years we read — the menu photographed in November 2024 and the one photographed in June 2026 carry the same figures. One oddity: the dearest single plate is not a pizza or a pasta but a ₩32,500 salad, which one writer says she puzzled over.
- Regulars write about this place. Six say they had been before: one comes for team lunches when she wants pasta without spending much; one has gone back regularly since stumbling on it; one says the room is always comfortable, every time; one names the dish she cannot come here without ordering. Another had eaten here at a work dinner when she worked in the district, and came back years later for the memory. Only one writer says outright that it was her first visit. Six say they mean to return, and nobody says they will not — though since all twenty-eight are different people, we cannot tell you whether the ones who said so did.

Not one post mentions a step, a stair or a ramp. Two writers say in their own words that it is on the ground floor: one after walking down into the basement bar by mistake and finding the restaurant was upstairs, the other while describing the walk, where the room comes into view on the ground floor of a brick building. The licence agrees, and in twenty-eight posts nobody climbs anything, so it looks level — but nobody has looked at the doorway and said whether there is a lip. That is not a no; it is that we do not know. One writer notes a clear plastic sheet hung over the door against the cold, and another followed an arrow round to a back entrance because the front one was shut in winter — so which door you use may depend on the season, though what either door looks like, nobody says. Five write that the toilets are inside and separated by sex, and one notes a washbasin outside them. Whether there is an accessible cubicle, nobody says.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 29 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Thirty posts, two taken out, twenty-eight counted. One belongs to a different business in the same building — a wine bar in the basement whose name is built on the same word. It came to us because the address matches; from first line to last it is about downstairs, and the writer never went up. We are not the only ones confused: one customer recognised the name, walked down the basement stairs and made her booking there, and only afterwards learned that the restaurant was on the ground floor. The other is an automated "twenty best in the neighbourhood" listing which says of itself that it was assembled from scraped public data; its account of this place is two lines, nobody ate anything, and the opening hours it prints match none of the other twenty-odd posts. The twenty-eight that remain were written by twenty-eight different people.
- The posts disagree about the hours — but lay them out by date and it reads as a change, not a disagreement. Every post that gives a ten o'clock closing was written before March 2025; every post that gives half past nine was written after. The closing day moves the same way: the earlier posts write the week as Monday to Friday, as though it opened on Mondays, and all eight later ones say it is shut on Mondays. We have not confirmed this with the restaurant. Eighteen posts agree that the afternoon break starts at three; three of them split the end, five on weekdays and half past four at weekends. One writer walked in the moment the break ended and another says she ran from work and just missed it, so the door does genuinely shut. Last orders are nine o'clock in four posts and half past eight in two, the later pair from September 2025 onwards. Ring before you go.
- One sentence of praise for the room turns up in four posts almost word for word — and it is the shop's own. It runs, roughly, that the place is decorated in a natural style and suits couples, families and gatherings of every kind. One of the four prints "from the Naver description" above it; a second hedges it as something she had heard; the other two write it as their own. We have not counted that sentence as anybody's observation of the room. A claim that the restaurant has been in this neighbourhood for nine years appears in two posts in near-identical words; the licence does date from January 2017, so the arithmetic holds. Nobody checked it, though.
- Almost nobody writes about waiting. Not one post records queuing. A regular says weekends are always busy and advises ringing ahead; another booked because she had heard lunchtimes fill, and found the room half empty when she arrived; a third passes on, second-hand, that there can be a wait at peak times. Against that, one writer arrived near closing to an empty room. It reads less like a place with a queue than a place whose tables go to bookings — but that is as far as the posts take us.
- No post declares a sponsorship. Five state that they paid — one of them posts the receipt — and the other twenty-three say nothing either way. One writer jokes that she would not say no to being paid, which is a way of saying she was not. Two posts are stuffed with search terms, the same string of neighbourhood keywords repeated above every photograph. Both name what they ordered and what it cost, and both describe eating it, so we counted them; we note only that they were written with a search engine in mind.
- We do not know where the first branch is, or whether it still exists. The registered name of this place ends in "branch two", and three posts reach for the first: one writer says only that she used to go there often; another remembers it beside a particular school and notes that it no longer shows on the map; a third supposes it has gone. All three are guessing. Of the bar that used to occupy the basement, one writer speaks in the past tense, as somewhere she remembers. The name still says branch two, but there appears to be only one place to go — beyond that we could not confirm anything.
