Ttangkkeut-maeul Hoe-tteuneun-jip
땅끝마을 회뜨는집 Ttangkkeutmaeul Hoetteuneunjip The name means "Land's End Village, the house that slices raw fish" — Ttangkkeut-maeul is the village at Korea's southernmost tip in Haenam, far from Seoul, and hoe-tteuneun-jip is literally the house where fish are filleted. Nothing about the shop is in Haenam; the name claims the fish comes from that end of the country.

Ttangkkeut-maeul Hoe-tteuneun-jip is a neighbourhood raw-fish house on the ground floor of an apartment arcade, one to three minutes' walk from exits 3 and 4 of Ttukseom station. It has been licensed since 2003 and is run by a husband and wife (two writers say "more than ten years"). Yellow tanks line the front, and the day's seasonal catch is chalked on a whiteboard hung on the utility pole beside them. What they sell is fish killed to order: flounder, rockfish, red sea bream and sea bass year round; croaker and cold mulhoe in summer, gizzard shad and prawns in autumn, great amberjack and oysters in winter. Fish is sold by the plate, not per person — bream ₩35,000 (small) or ₩60,000, flatfish sekkosi ₩45,000, amberjack ₩55,000, spicy fish stew ₩9,000. Order fish and a free spread arrives: silkworm-pupae soup, a small bowl of roe rice, seaweed soup and a savoury pancake — twenty of twenty-seven posts mention the pupae. Seating is both chairs and a shoes-off floor section, under ten tables in all; three writers call the room small. The best of it is the street seating: on a fine day they will set tables out in the alley, but only one is out by default — you have to ask. Open 15:30 to 23:00 (since 2025; before that it opened at 11:30). There is no toilet inside — it is the shared one at the end of the ground floor of the same building. No parking. Nearly everyone who writes about it works nearby, and they come as a second or third stop of the evening, not the first.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- On a fine day they will lay a table out in the alley — but you have to ask. Eight posts describe the street seating and three of them say they asked for it. Only one table is out by default, usually with the owner sitting at it: one party asked whether they could have one and had it set up beside him; another "pestered" for it; a third asked with a wink and got it cheerfully. A July 2024 writer puts it the other way round — if the inside is full, they will set you up outside. There are about three tables and it is tight (November 2024). One thing to know: it is a working alley and cars come through — one writer found it awkward, another decided the atmosphere was worth it anyway. This is a spring-and-autumn pleasure: all eight posts fall between March and July.
- This is a regulars' place for people who work nearby — eight of twenty-seven writers say they had been before, and fourteen are writing about work dinners. The nine-year span (December 2017 to September 2026) makes it visible: one couple came here while dating and are now eight years married; one writer says that whenever her partner was eating raw fish, it was always here; another's office "goes here whenever we gather"; a third comes every time she feels like raw fish; a fourth lists what her office eats here by season. The clearest case is September 2026: wanting raw fish, the writer asked a colleague, who said her own team comes often and had eaten here with the director the night before — "if people keep going to a place near the office, hasn't it already been vetted?" The shop is used as the opposite of a hotspot: three separate writers contrast it with fashionable Seongsu — the quiet stretch where residents and office workers go, "a local uncles' hangout" and "Seongsu's hidden strong one".
- There is a shoes-off floor section as well as ordinary tables — seven writers describe it. Four of them say the same thing in the same words: both kinds are there, sit wherever suits you. In winter the floor section is heated — a February 2023 visitor took "the warm floor seat" (it is an *ondol*). The room holds under ten tables: two writers count about ten, one reckons a party of eight is the limit. Three call it cramped and one calls it roomy — "smaller inside than I expected" against "plenty of seats", with one writer splitting the difference: not wide, but no problem for a quiet chat. If sitting on the floor is hard for you, say so on the way in — both kinds exist.
- There is no toilet inside the shop — it is the building's shared one, at the far end of the same ground floor. The two writers who actually used it say so: one lists it under drawbacks, the other puts "the toilet is outside" in her verdict (and writes the same line about the beer bar next door, so it is the arcade's arrangement). A third, in 2022, ends a happy review with nothing but "the one shame is... the toilet...?" and never says what was wrong. One line says the opposite, and it is copied: a 2023 post's header lists "group seating, takeaway, booking, separate men's and women's toilets" — a Naver facilities line, pasted the same way into her post about the shop next door the following day, and she never mentions using it. So we do not count it. In practice: you leave the shop and cross the arcade corridor, and from the street tables it is further still.

Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in — but four things are worth knowing. ①It is on the ground floor, and no post mentions a step at this door — across nine years and twenty-seven posts the word "stairs" turns up exactly once, in a passage about a different bar carried in the same post, and the licence records this address as ground floor. ②But the toilet is not inside: you cross the arcade corridor to the far end of the same floor, and nobody describes what that toilet is like. ③About half the seating is a shoes-off floor section — ordinary tables exist too, so ask. ④The street tables sit on the alley floor and cars come through. Only one post records coming with family (a married couple, 2023). Since a bowl of silkworm pupae arrives unasked, it is worth warning a child first.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Do not trust the opening hours you find by searching — that is what was wrong here the longest. Ten posts copied "daily 11:30–01:00" into their headers, from 2019 to November 2024. Three writers say otherwise, and one explains why: in April 2024 the owner told her that Naver said 1am because he does not know how to change it, and that he closes at 11pm. Another that month simply notes "they shut at eleven here"; a third, in July, pasted 11:30–01:00 into her own header and added underneath that on weekdays they seem to close around midnight. It has since been fixed: March 2025 and September 2026 both say 15:30–23:00. A September 2024 post mentions office workers eating lunch here, so the 11:30 opening was true until then. So: the opening time changed (11:30 to 15:30), and 1am was never true. Our table carries only 15:30–23:00 — we dropped a ten-post majority for a two-post minority, on the strength of what the owner said and of someone who was turned out at eleven. Only one post records a weekly closing day ("none"), too few for the table; in twenty-seven posts across nine years, nobody found it shut.
- Order fish and a bowl of silkworm pupae arrives free — twenty of twenty-seven posts mention it. *Bbeondegi-tang*, simmered in an earthenware pot. To Korean customers it reads as a good sign: several say the pot alone is worth a bottle of soju, one likes it loaded with hot green chilli, another calls it one of the great things to drink with. Two things if it is new to you. First, these are insects — it may not be what the photograph suggests. Second, nobody minds if you leave it: one Korean writer says plainly that she does not eat them either, and was simply glad the table was now set for drinking. One writer found it salty (2017). Alongside it come a small bowl of roe rice, seaweed soup, a savoury pancake and white kimchi — the soup is one bowl per person and is refilled (one writer had three).
- Check the sign before you go in — the arcade's ground floor is a row of restaurants, and one of them is more famous than this shop. Two writers say as much: one came for thick flounder and notes that this place gets fewer reviews because the famous cold-mulhoe house is next door; another, in 2019, recommends it as the good alternative when that neighbour is closed. A 2023 writer locates the shop as "the one next to Jukbyeonhang". Six businesses sit in a line here: noodles at 101, a beer bar at 103, this shop at 104–105, pork belly at 106–107, and the famous mulhoe house at 110–111, with another Korean restaurant next door at number 42. They all share the street address "Sangwon-gil 40", so the address alone cannot tell them apart — a review of the beer bar had in fact been filed under this shop. What to look for: the yellow fish tanks and the whiteboard hanging on the utility pole — as one writer puts it, the shop "hugs the pole".
- Opinions on price split, and they split in one direction — the fish is good, the bill is not cheap. Four say it is dear: "expensive, being by the station and a local shop"; "the fish is genuinely good but the price is not kind"; "not cheap, but the seafood is fresh so I come often"; "fifty thousand for one plate, hm — for three or four people, I suppose". Two say it is fair: one in 2023 values it precisely because raw fish is hard to find around Ttukseom, and the oldest post we have, from 2017, calls it good fish at a low price. One writer recorded a total: amberjack ₩55,000 plus a bream-and-flounder plate ₩50,000 plus extra roe rice ₩8,000 — ₩113,000 for four (December 2022). Three writers found portions small: the oysters, the amberjack, and — from a customer of eight years' standing — the sense that the sides and the fish had both shrunk a little, which she put down to inflation.
- Everything we know about the floor comes from the register, not from a visitor. The licence gives the address as "Hyundai Arcade units 104–105, ground floor", and the address line pasted into the posts — "Sangwon-gil 40, Ttukseom Hyundai Apartments" — names no floor at all. In twenty-seven posts the words for lift, basement and half-landing never appear once, and "stairs" appears exactly once, in a passage that is not about this shop: a May 2024 writer put two stops of one evening into a single post, and "take the stairs up, it's on the third floor" belongs to the rooftop bar she went to first. The only "ground floor" in anyone's own words is the line from the writer who used the toilet — "the far end of the same ground floor"; the other three are other shops' check-in cards. So the ground floor is the register's word, not the word of twenty-seven people who walked in.
- In twenty-seven posts there is not one line about foreign customers or an English menu — unusual in this list. The word "foreign" never appears. At other Seongsu shops we have read, sightings of foreign diners come up steadily; here, nine years of writing is almost entirely local office workers and residents. So, rather than guess: nobody records whether English is spoken, whether the menu has English, or whether cards are taken. What we can tell you: the printed menu lists fish names in Korean and the seasonal ones are chalked on a whiteboard, so pointing works. There is no draught beer — a May 2024 writer notes it in her verdict, "no draught, it's a raw-fish house" — though bottled beer is there (one 2023 party mixed Cass with soju). The drink here is soju.
- Three of the thirty posts we had confirmed were not about this shop, and each arrived by a different route. One is a work trip to Haenam — *Ttangkkeut-maeul* is a real place, the southern tip of the country, so a two-day trip through Mokpo, Haenam and Jindo came in whole. One is a review of the beer bar at unit 103 in the same arcade: the body is entirely about next door, and this shop's name appears only in the writer's own link card at the top (she had written about this shop properly the day before, and that post stays in our count). The third was written without visiting (February 2026): it claims an order of "live fish and seasonal catch", but every distinctive sentence traces to three posts from 2024, and one February post cannot contain both "autumn gizzard shad in season" and "spring flatfish in season". Every number in our tables is counted from the remaining twenty-seven.
