Ro&Um Seongsu is a latte-art café with fewer than twenty seats, on the ground floor of 24 Wangsimni-ro 14-gil, two or three minutes from exit 1 at Ttukseom. It is run by a married pair of world latte-art champions — RORA, the first Korean woman on the national latte-art team, and UMPAUL, seven times a world grand slam winner. They have been on television, and one wall carries the trophies; a hundred of them, the writers are told. Every seat is at the counter, so the drawing happens in front of you — one writer compares it to omakase. A champion design latte is 10,000 won, a portrait drawn from life 20,000, in colour 30,000, and you may bring a photograph or a cartoon character. The extraction is patented and said to leave under five per cent of the caffeine, which is also why the affogato does not melt. The hours move — the owners travel to compete, so check before you go.

What sets it apart
- Here the people are the menu — twenty-one of the twenty-five write about the championships. One copies both records down: RORA, world latte-art champion and the first Korean woman to make the national team, and UMPAUL, world champion and seven-time grand slam winner. Seventeen mention the trophies — a hundred of them between the two of them, they are told, ranked along one wall. Thirteen mention the television programme, and one noticed the plaque for it, and the autographs of visitors, on the way in. So people come to watch rather than to drink: eleven describe watching the pour, and one was so absorbed in someone else's cup that she nearly missed her own being made. Another, who had pulled lattes in a chain café, writes that this is simply a different thing.
- Every seat is at the counter, and that is the design. Six writers say so and none says otherwise — an open bar arranged, as one puts it, like an omakase counter so that you can watch the pour; a party of five simply sat in a row along it. It is small: nineteen call the room snug or little and not one calls it roomy. Yet five of them fitted, and at lunch it fills — one writer arrived to find two other people in the room and left it nearly full, takeaway customers included. One notes that the chairs are well padded.
- They say the coffee has almost no caffeine in it — twelve writers were told so. One records it as she heard it: the extraction is patented, leaves under five per cent of the caffeine, and is therefore safe for pregnant women, students and anyone sensitive — and she, who cannot take coffee after two in the afternoon without losing the night, was delighted. The menu marks the espresso series as patented. It explains two other things: the affogato that will not melt, and the writer who drank two lattes in an afternoon and was fine. But this is what the shop tells its customers, not something we have verified — what we know is that twelve people were told the same thing. If you are pregnant or avoiding caffeine, ask them directly.
- Nine writers describe a small room kept in order — plain and very clean, snug but tidy, comfortable. One notes the music, warm and unhurried. Five write about the service and all five agree. Sometimes both owners are there and sometimes only one — one writer found the owner working alone. Because the only seats face the bar, you are effectively sitting across from whoever is working, and kindness here shows up as explanation: how to drink the orange espresso, why the caffeine is low, how the matcha is whisked, what the drawing is going to be. Several posts record being told these things.

Parking is the one thing these writers cannot agree on. Six say there is none — one adds that you will have to sort something out yourself. Three say there is, and one of those is specific: room for about three cars in front of the shop. Another reads like the shop's own directions rather than a customer's observation — park briefly out front, mention it and they will make room — which is a kind of sentence we do not count. We cannot settle it, so both are in the table. Nobody names an alternative car park and nobody says what parking cost them. Eight describe the walk instead: 196 metres from exit 1 at Ttukseom, two or three minutes — though one writer advises coming out of exit 2 instead, whatever the map says. Others put it five to seven minutes from Seongsu station, and one leaves the last instruction: do not walk as far as the sign; turn in between the buildings below it.

Getting inside
We have not counted the lines that say dogs are welcome, that they do takeaway, that there is wi-fi, or that it is wheelchair accessible. All four are copied from the listing. Twelve posts carry the dog line, nine the takeaway, three the wi-fi and one the wheelchair — and not one writer reports any of them from experience: nobody among the twenty-five brought a dog, took coffee away, or used the network. The wheelchair line is the one that matters. It sits in a facilities list copied from the listing, and nothing in the twenty-five describes a step, a threshold or the width of the way in. What six of them do confirm is that every seat is at a counter — so whether there is somewhere to sit in a wheelchair is a question for the shop. It is at street level, and you turn in between the buildings: that is the whole of what we know.

What we do not know
- Nobody queues here, but the room fills quickly because there is so little of it. Not one of the twenty-five says they waited. Two watched it fill: one arrived to two other customers and left with the counter nearly full, takeaway orders arriving through the lunch hour; the other found it busy and the owner working alone. That second detail is the one to hold on to — with one pair of hands drawing, you wait for the portrait in front of yours. Several writers describe doing exactly that and enjoying it: watching the previous customer's cup, or the different versions going out to other tables. The waiting is the show. Just reckon with the lunch hour, when takeaway orders share the same pair of hands.
- There is a part of this café we have not read: the coffee itself. The board carries single origins — dark blend 8,000 won, Kenya washed 9,000, Ethiopia natural 10,000, Costa Rica geisha 12,000, a café royal at 20,000 — four teas, and two ades, one of them named after the neighbourhood. Not one of the twenty-five drank from any of it. They came for the art, and what they ordered bunches accordingly: the design latte (seven), the matcha (six), plain and vanilla lattes (four), portraits (three), the affogato (three), the orange espresso (two). And one name is left over: a listicle about the 2025 Kanu barista championship finalists gives UMPAUL's competition drink as Starry Night on the Italian Coast. That post is not one of the twenty-five, so we have not counted it — and nothing says whether the café sells it. Worth asking.
- Street level — and you look for the gap between the buildings before you look for the sign. Nobody among the twenty-five mentions stairs, an upper floor or a basement. Two leave directions: do not walk as far as the sign, turn in between the buildings below it; cross the road and go a little way into the alley. Even the station exit is disputed — the map says 196 metres from exit 1, but one writer insists exit 2 is easier. Nobody says whether there is a step at the door, or which way it opens. A room of under twenty seats, all of them at a counter: that is the whole of the layout we know.
- Nobody looked at the toilets — and we know that from an unusually good source. One post of the twenty-five contains the word, and it belongs to a writer who rates toilets out of five and publishes her scale: one star for unusable, two for hold-on-and-go-once, three for so-so, four for properly clean. Against Ro&Um she wrote did not visit. Even the person who always checks did not check here. Whether it is inside, whether it belongs to the building, whether it is separated by sex — we do not know. In a ground-floor room of under twenty seats it may well be the building's, but that is our guess. You come here to watch one cup being made and drink it, so nobody stays long; the gap is still a gap.
