oiljang

오일장 Oiljang Oiljang joins 'oil' and 'jang', the Korean fermented sauces like doenjang and soy sauce, which the kitchen builds its dishes on; it also sounds like the word for a traditional five-day market.

Compiled from 23 blog posts read in fullSources →

Oiljang is a small wine bar on the second floor of a building in an alley off Seoulsup 2-gil, near Seoul Forest. It cooks Korean-based plates around oils and jang (fermented sauces like doenjang and soy) at roughly 20,000-40,000 won each, and you must order alcohol. One chef works an open kitchen; seating is a bar counter plus a few four-top tables. The signature is perilla-oil noodles with pickled minari, ordered in 20 of the 23 visit posts. It opens in the evening (copied listings say from 15:00 at weekends), and most visitors booked through CatchTable. Prices have crept up: the noodles were 19,800 won from October 2024 to June 2025 and 21,000 won by March 2026. We read 28 posts from October 2024 to September 2026; 23 describe a visit.

Rows without a count: 12 of 18 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You cannot come just to eat: 5 posts say ordering alcohol was required. Non-drinkers ordered non-alcoholic bottles instead — one couple because they drove, another because neither drinks much.
  2. At weekends it has to be a bottle: 7 posts say they had to order one that day. The copied house rule is a bottle on Friday to Sunday and holidays, one glass per person or one bottle per table Monday to Thursday, and two bottles for parties of five or more.
  3. 10 posts describe the open kitchen; many sat at the counter and watched the chef cook, and one says pairs seem to be seated at the bar. Seat counts given were 'eight bar seats and three four-tops' (July 2025) and 'three four-person tables, about six bar seats' (October 2024).
  4. It is small: 11 posts say so, one counting 'three tables? four?'. Spacing between tables is disputed — a May 2026 post found it tight, a May 2025 post did not.
4 more
  1. 10 posts call the chef-owner kind, and they say why: warmed hand-warmers pressed into guests' hands on cold nights (November and December 2024), blankets at every seat, wine picked on the spot from a stated taste and budget. Many posts single out the ritual of choosing your own coloured chopsticks before the food arrives.
  2. 7 posts booked through CatchTable, and several found the room full in the evening. In December 2024 one couple arrived for an 8 pm booking while the previous sitting ran over; the owner sent them to a nearby bar for a beer on him until the table was ready.
  3. Portions run small: 4 posts say so, one adding they were still hungry after finishing. One post found the two-person pot rice generous.
  4. 4 posts from November and December 2024 describe Christmas decorations: a wreath at the door, a tree, wine bottles dressed as reindeer, snowman stickers on the menu.

Posts saying you cannot2 of 23 posts

Assume no parking: 2 posts say so first-hand, and the rest copy the listing's 'no parking' with nearby public lots (Ttukseom reservoir lot about 5 minutes' walk). One July 2025 post found those lots far enough that a taxi was easier.

Getting inside

Second floor10 of 23 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 10 (of 23 posts read)

It is upstairs: 10 posts place it on the second floor, several describing climbing past a stairwell lined with empty wine bottles. One warns it is easy to miss in the alley.

No one mentions a step at the door, a lift, or getting in with a wheelchair or pushchair; several posts walked up stairs to the second floor. That means unknown, not absent.

No one says whether the toilet is inside the bar; 'separate men's and women's toilets' appears only in copied listings. Posts do mention mouthwash, hand soap and sanitary products in the toilet.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Whether it's expensive is split: 3 posts say yes (one paid about 30,000 won a glass), 2 say no, 4 hedge. Dish prices have risen — the rib galbijjim went 39,000 to 41,000 to 43,000 won between October 2024 and June 2025, the doenjang flounder 29,800 to 31,000 won by March 2026. Prices are as of each post.
  • No post describes queueing; most visitors had bookings, and one says walk-ins are possible. How long a walk-in waits is unknown.
  • One chef cooks everything. One October 2024 post found dishes slow to arrive; another that month said it can take a while when orders pile up but passed quickly watching the kitchen.
  • 'No kids' appears only in copied listings; no post describes going with children.
  • Opening hours come only from copied listings and vary a little. Of 18 visit posts that give hours, 12 say Monday-Thursday 17:00-01:00 and Friday-Sunday 15:00-01:00, last order 23:30. Two mid-2025 posts say 17:00-01:00 daily, one November 2024 post says daily until midnight, and a May 2026 post opens only Saturday and Sunday at 15:00. No lunch service is mentioned, and no one lists a closing day.
  • The phone number most posts give is 0507-1363-9655; others list 010-4001-9655 or 02-2636-9200. Most visitors reserved through CatchTable, with no deposit according to copied details.
  • Four posts disclose sponsorship or invitations, including a winery event dinner. A 2026 wine promotion article, a 2025 perilla-oil collaboration list and a food-market vendor list are not visits and were not counted.
