Log Seongsu is a western dining room one floor below ground at 36 Seoulsup 2-gil, five or six minutes' walk from exit 5 of Seoul Forest station. A brick and white building on the café street carries the sign; down the stairs, the wine is racked at the door. Fresh pasta and a wood-fired grill are the point — sweet shrimp tagliatelle (23,000–24,000 won) with bisque and roast pepper under raw shrimp, an ikura carbonara (24,000) with seaweed and salmon roe, and octopus with romesco (21,000) off the wood grill. Noon to half past nine, closed between half past three and five. Shut on Tuesdays — and on Wednesdays, though that seems to be changing. Tables, a counter and a private room, with space to book out for up to fifty. No parking; reserve through Naver or Catch Table.

• 단새우 딸리아뗄레4 ate it

  **Four of the six ate this — it is the house dish.** **The price disagrees once**: 24,000 won on 17 August, 23,000 on the 30th. Bisque with a roast-pepper purée and green oil, raw sweet shrimp laid on top, on **fresh tagliatelle** — three writers praise the noodle separately, broad and chewy. **They tell you how to eat it**: mix the sauces right through, which one writer did at once and then described the layers piling up, shellfish depth under the sweetness of the roast pepper. **One calls it a tartare** and explains why: the shrimp is raw when it arrives and cooks a little as you turn it through the warm pasta. One warns that the plate is large enough to make the portion look small in photographs — it is not.

  **24,000 won, eaten by three; the two who record the price agree.** Carbonara with seaweed, soy-cured salmon roe and grana padano. **Two writers doubted the name and both came round** — neither could picture it and both found it worked, one enjoying how the seaweed made it faintly Korean, the other liking the salt of the roe bursting against the cream. **The writer who had this and the shrimp pasta side by side reaches a verdict**: she had expected to prefer the shrimp, and kept reaching for this one instead. Order one of each and share, she says — they are nothing like each other.

  **Order, and a kombucha arrives first** — sharp and fizzy, one writer says, exactly right before food. **Another was given water with lemon in it**, welcome in summer. Water and spare plates come from a **self-serve bar**, and the table is laid down to the wet wipes. **Ask for pickles and they are generous — two writers record it**: one was startled to be brought something closer to a dish than a garnish, the other liked the long-cut cucumber. **It is the only thing two of these six describe identically.**

  **A glass of the house white is 8,000 won; two writers had one.** **The bottles are racked right at the door** — two mention walking past them on the way in, and one took it as a promise. White, red, sparkling and **non-alcoholic** as well, which two writers note makes it workable at lunch. Those who drank it call it light, faintly sweet, clean against the food. **One who drove at lunchtime records the regret**: she could not drink, and thought the room would be better in the evening with a glass.

  **21,000 won, and the other dish people name as a signature — two ate it.** Octopus with romesco purée, grapefruit, avocado and olives, and edible flowers (both mention the flowers). **It is cooked on a wood-fired grill**, which one writer knew going in: the smoke, she says, took her back to a meal in Cancún, and the octopus melted. The other found the sauce sharp and good against white wine. **Do not eat the octopus on its own**, one advises — it deepens with everything else on the plate.

  **Write a Naver review and they give you a house tiramisu — three writers record it and one ate it.** Two copy the offer down, one of them specifying pistachio. The one who had it found it sharp enough to clear the palate at the end. **Nobody says whether you can simply buy it.**

  **One writer ordered it to start; nobody records a price.** Crisp outside, soft within, dipped into a sharp tomato sauce — a good enough opening, she says, to raise her expectations of everything after it.

Her table — octopus, this salad and a glass of white at 39,000 won in total — **is the most fully recorded meal we have from this restaurant.**

Parking

3 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

There is no parking — but this is the one place in our reading that answers the question properly. Three writers raise it, and one of them actually parked and wrote down the price: the Seongdong District Sports Centre, four minutes' walk, 4,200 won an hour. That is the first time anyone has given us a car park by name and a price together. A second writer used the same one. A third points instead at the discounts available in D-Tower and Galleria Foret. Four describe the walk: 393 to 400 metres from exit 5 at Seoul Forest, five or six minutes; under 500 from exit 8 at Ttukseom, about eight — and one adds the direction, towards the Atelier road.

Getting there

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. None of those words appears in the six, and nor does a lift. All we know is that it is a basement reached by stairs, which two writers describe walking down. Nobody counts the steps, measures them, or mentions a handrail. Nothing is said about the toilets either — in a basement it matters whether they are inside, or up the stairs again. And the six matters: this is the silence of six writers, not of twenty-five. If it matters to you, ring and ask.

What we do not know

• The name of this restaurant is close to useless in a search, and that comes first. The two syllables that make it are also the middle of the Korean word for *blog* — and since almost every Naver post carries the words "this blog's check-in", searching the name catches almost every post written in Seongsu. The crawl returned 367; thirty passed verification; six of those thirty were written by someone who ate here. In the other twenty-four the syllables belong to the writers' own blog names, to title prefixes they put on every local post, to another shop entirely (a vintage photo booth), to ordinary words — analogue, hologram — and, in one case, to logging in and logging out. One post came from the same building: we are in the basement of 36 Seoulsup 2-gil, and that writer was shopping in the clothes shop on the ground floor. Every number on this page is six people's.
• Not one of the six waited — and all three who explain why had a reason. One booked through Catch Table and recommends it. One arrived between lunch and the afternoon break, at two on a weekday, and found the room nearly empty. One got there as it opened, having booked through Naver, and was first in. Both booking systems work — Naver and Catch Table, each used by one of them. None of the six came in the evening, so about the evening queue we know nothing: the writer who imagines it as a room for a glass of wine after dark was there at lunch.
• Two things only one writer records, and both are worth keeping. The first is the open kitchen: you can watch the chef work, which she thought lifted the room, and she watched her own food being cooked. The second is the wood-fired grill — she copies down a slow-cooked prime T-bone and sirloin rested off that grill, and tasted the smoke in the octopus. She also noticed a barbecue space beside the entrance and admits she does not know whether the steaks are cooked there. Neither do we. None of the six ate a steak, so the expensive end of this menu is a part we have not read.
• Not one of the six mentions the toilet. The word does not appear. In a basement that is a gap worth naming: whether it is inside the restaurant or belongs to the building, whether it is separated by sex, and whether you have to climb the stairs again, we do not know. The only thing the six let us infer is the size of the place — a room that books out for fifty, with a private room, a counter and tables for four, is likely to have its own; but that is our inference and nobody's account. It matters more here than elsewhere, because this is a room people sit in for a long evening.
• Of six posts, only two say who they came with — and both came with a spouse or partner. One writer spent a long weekend walking in Seoul Forest with her husband; another describes a Seongsu date with hers. The remaining four give away only that there was more than one of them ("we started with the arancini") and never say who. Nobody came alone. One post notes that the bar seats would work for eating solo — but that is a remark about the furniture, not a report of doing it. She ordered one pasta and a glass of white wine and never says she was by herself. Nobody came as a group, either. Two posts state that the room can be booked out — for fifty people in one and for up to sixty in the other — but both lines are lifted from the restaurant's own blurb, and they do not even agree. Four writers look at the private room and the long table and suggest it for an engagement lunch, a work dinner or a birthday; all of that is suggestion. How it actually goes with a group, we do not know — if you are thinking of booking it out, ask the restaurant.
