Kyewol
계월 Gyewol gye is the Chinese character for chicken, wol for moon — the owner says he wanted the clear broth to hold the look of moonlight on still water.

Gyewol is a chicken-gomtang shop down a residential lane in Seongsu, closer to Seoul Forest station than to Seongsu station and a good walk in from the street of pop-ups and cafés. There are four things on the menu — a clear broth, a spicy red one, a chicken salad and a plate of poached chicken — and both soups arrive as a single bowl with the rice already in them. Every seat faces the cooking range across a counter, and there are about eight of them. Two writers say one person does all the cooking and all the serving. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a Blue Ribbon, and nine writers describe seeing the stickers on the way in. The posts we read run from February to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- There are no tables to sit across. Sixteen posts say every seat is at the counter, and one states flatly that there is no four-top. Twelve writers counted the stools and got slightly different answers — six or seven, seven or eight, about eight (eight of them), eight to ten, ten. However you count, it is under a dozen. Which makes a group hard: one writer reckons two or three suits the room and that beyond that there simply is not the space. Another notes that you do not choose your stool — you are placed in the order you arrive, so you may well end up beside a stranger — and that she was asked to wait outside until the rest of her party turned up. Nobody writes about anywhere to put a bag.
- It splits almost evenly — nine waited, eight did not. Those who waited: ten minutes at around noon; twenty minutes standing in the lane because every seat was taken; twenty minutes on a weekday; twenty to thirty minutes on a walk-in. One writer timed her arrival to opening, found three parties ahead of her and still got in with the first sitting. Another was there at opening too, found one party ahead, and watched the room fill inside ten minutes with people queueing behind. Those who walked straight in came at one or two on a Saturday, one o'clock on a Monday, the tail end of lunch, or a weekday midday. So the crush is around twelve; after one, or just after the afternoon break, people got seats. Two of them, though, saw the queue start with the party behind them. One writer who used to pass it every day on her commute puts it simply: on a lucky day there was nobody waiting.
- Nine writers describe the stickers by the door. How many years they cover, though, depends on who you ask. A February 2026 post saw two, for 2024 and 2025; a July post saw 2024, 2025 and 2026; an August post says three years running; a May post says 2024 and 2025 and now this year as well. Read in date order it looks as though the 2026 plaque went up that spring, but we have not confirmed it. The Blue Ribbon count varies more — one writer says five, one says six years running, and the rest only say there are several, one per year. One regular asked the owner whether he had spotted the inspector: he had not the faintest idea, and found out by letter.
- Sit down and the cooking is happening an arm's length away. Seven posts mention the open range, and they overlap on what they saw: the broth poured into the bowl in front of them; the dish lifted straight out of the pot; the blowtorch run over the poached chicken (two of them); the owner explaining how to eat something (four). One writer says the wait stopped feeling like a wait once she could watch. Another brought a friend who is particular about hygiene, and the state of the range settled him. There is no ordering screen — you read the card in front of you and say it out loud, as one writer notes.
- Nobody calls it dear. All three posts that discuss price go the other way: a Michelin listing for eleven thousand won; a bowl of soup that has stayed under the going rate while everything else passed it; a writer who says the guide plus the price left her no choice. Not one dish has moved in the twenty-two posts we read — the white broth is ₩11,000 in February and ₩11,000 in September. Worth knowing, though, that the side dishes have two prices: the full plates of chicken salad and poached chicken are ₩18,000 each, while the ₩8,000 lunchtime portions are what nearly everyone here actually ordered. A soup and one of those comes in under twenty thousand a head.
- Two writers came on their own. One stopped in between errands and found it easy: nobody makes conversation with you here, they just get on with the cooking. The other used to work in the neighbourhood and came for lunch alone, or with one colleague. A third watched others do it — with counter seating, she writes, a fair number of people eat here by themselves. Rather more posts say it would be good for eating alone, but most of those are inferring it from the stools rather than reporting it. The other twenty came in twos or more: with a sister, a friend, a partner, a couple they know.

Parking

There is no car park. Only one writer actually drove: she left the car at the Seoul Forest municipal park and walked about ten minutes. One regular names a different municipal park nearby. The line about no parking and using a public car park appears in most of the other posts, but always in the copied information block at the top, so we have not counted it as anything anyone saw. Nobody says how many spaces, what it costs, or how narrow the lane is. Read it as: nobody here arrived by car and wrote about it.

Not one post mentions a step or a threshold. The address says ground floor, and one writer describes the big front window, but whether there is a lip at the door, and whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets through, is nowhere in the twenty-two. Several note that every seat is a raised counter stool, and one adds that the stools are on the heavy side — which tells you nothing about getting onto one. This is not a no; it is nobody having written it down. If it matters, ring and ask.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 29 posts we gathered, 7 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- The posts do not agree on how you get a seat. A May 2026 visitor rang the restaurant and wrote down what she was told: the booking app only offered evening slots and nothing same-day, and the shop itself said it takes no waitlist bookings at all — you turn up and go in the order you arrived — and does not use the app's remote queue. A March visitor says much the same: it does not appear to be on any waiting app. Yet a July visitor advises the opposite — use the app to join the queue or book ahead. We cannot tell which is true now. A phone call will settle it.
- The toilet is not in the restaurant. Two writers say so outright — one of them pointing at a notice by the door. A third only mentions that there is a notice about where it is. A fourth warns that the building is old and you should expect the toilet to match, without saying what she means. Whether it is shared, how far out you go, whether it is locked — none of the twenty-two says.
- How long the walk from the station takes depends on who is walking. From exit 2 at Seoul Forest: five minutes by one account, ten by two others. From Seongsu station two writers walked twenty, and one says plainly that it is a long way out and getting there was hard work. Two recommend the bus instead — one rode the 2024 and got off at the church stop, three minutes away; the other got off by the primary school, also three minutes. Two more say that coming on foot from the pop-up-and-café end of the neighbourhood takes twenty minutes. One writer walked past it, because the sign is small; she found it by the red stickers and the drawing of a chicken on the right-hand side.
- The posts disagree about closing days. More than ten carry the same line — every day, eleven to nine, closed between three and five, last orders at half two and half eight. But one check-in block says Tuesday to Friday, no closing day, and another post says Tuesday, eleven in the morning to midnight. Both look like transcription slips, since neither matches the rest of its own post, but we could not establish whether there is a regular closing day. The afternoon break is consistent across every account, so three to five is the hour to avoid.
- Some things are lunch only, and the posts disagree about takeaway. Several note that the ₩8,000 side portions of chicken salad and poached chicken are sold at lunch only; the two that give times agree on eleven until half past two. But one writer records that those side portions cannot be taken away, while another saw a sign in the shop saying everything can. A third post's information block says takeaway and delivery are both available — copied from a listing, so we have not counted it. Whether the restriction applies only to the side portions, or whether the policy changed, we could not settle. Three posts say the poached chicken is limited each day, so come early if that is what you want.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship. We read to the end of each, hashtags included, and found no disclosure line. Four writers state the opposite — that they paid. Nobody records being given anything free. Seven posts we did not count as visits, and it is worth saying why: five are round-ups of restaurants across Seoul or the district (one of them ending with the writer's promise to come back with a real review once she has actually been to any of them); one is an introduction that says outright it is built from what is publicly available; and one is a day out at Seoul Forest in which Gyewol appears in a single clause, the meal itself written up elsewhere. One more we removed entirely — it is a review of a different chicken restaurant, and Gyewol appears only as the place that had run out that evening. That leaves twenty-two, and since no blogger wrote twice, twenty-two posts are twenty-two people.
- Three posts have foreign customers in them. One writer, waiting outside, got talking to a Japanese couple who had come from Osaka by taxi; asked how they had heard of it, they said Instagram. Another watched the chicken salad go to the visitors beside her and regretted not ordering it. A third noticed that because so many overseas customers come, there is a second menu card with fuller descriptions. What language it is in, and whether it is still there, she does not say, and we could not check.
- Not one post writes about floors or stairs. The address reads "8 Seongdeokjeong 3-gil, ground floor, right-hand side", and twenty of the twenty-two posts simply copy that line — so the ground floor comes from the address, not from anyone's eyes. Nobody says whether there is a step or a stair at the door. No post mentions a basement or an upstairs either.
