Chinese

Huomara

후오마라 The name pairs 'huo' with mala, the numbing-hot Sichuan seasoning the whole menu is built on; no post explains what 'huo' stands for.

Compiled from 30 blog posts read in fullSources →

A small mala specialist a few steps into the side streets from Ttukseom Station exit 7, behind a yellow sign with red lettering and a panda. Inside: mint walls, neon and Chinese posters. The signature is a two-person platter of wok-fried mala xiang guo served with four bao buns (20,900 won); many posts added the one-person mala soup (10,900 won), cream shrimp (15,900 won), six soup dumplings (5,900 won) or a kaoliang highball (8,000 won). You pay first at a kiosk near the entrance, set the heat and the numbing level separately, and collect your food when your number comes up. Office workers fill it at lunch; evenings lean toward drinks. We read 30 posts from April 20 to October 4, 2026, and all 30 describe an actual visit. Many repeat the same phrases and the same order, so we counted only what people experienced, not the praise.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You order and pay at a kiosk before sitting down — 26 posts describe it. Food is collected at the counter when your ticket number is called; water, plates, sauces and pickles come from a self-service bar, and drinks from the fridge once paid. One post noted the owner runs the floor alone at lunch, hence the self-service; a posted notice says you can leave your dishes on the table.
  2. Twenty posts say the portions are large. Two people found the platter alone was plenty; a pair who added the soup and cream shrimp said they nearly burst. One post said the single soup could fill a grown man. No one called the food small — only the mini cream shrimp in the solo set, which two posts found disappointing.
  3. Eighteen posts call the prices fair or cheap, and none call them expensive. The reasons given: a two-person platter with four buns for 20,900 won, a one-person mala soup for 10,900 won in Seongsu, six dumplings for under 6,000 won. One post noted platter, soup and cream shrimp together came to under 50,000 won.
  4. Thirteen posts describe the seating: a wall-facing bar on the left as you enter, two- and four-person tables on the right, and in one post a terrace area. Five make clear it is not bar-only. Seven say the room is small, and a house notice copied in two posts asks solo diners to take the bar first.
3 more
  1. Heat and numbing are chosen separately — most posts say levels 1 to 3, one says 1 to 4. Eight posts found it spicy and one said it was not that hot or numbing. A pair who chose level 2 for both said their lips kept trembling and vowed to go down to level 1; another said heat 2 with numbing 1 was already very hot for a spice-shy friend. Coriander is added on request.
  2. Seven posts, from April to October 2026, mention a notice offering a free bottle of Chinese iced tea for a Naver review.
  3. Six posts went with friends, four with a partner, one with a mother, and two with coworkers at lunch. No poster went alone, though two noticed solo diners already eating.

Parking

1 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 30 posts

Nobody actually parked. Several posts copy a 'no parking' line or point to a nearby public lot, and one says in its own words that the shop has no parking. One couple left the car and took the subway; no one tried to park.

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

22 posts say it is walkable from the station.

Getting inside

No post says from experience which floor it is on or whether there are steps; only the address says ground floor, and one post mentions a terrace area. That is silence, not a confirmed answer.

Nobody says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller fits. We only know the room is small with a lot of bar seating.

No post mentions the toilet — inside or outside, shared or separate. We don't know.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • No post reports waiting. Two say they walked straight in — one around 1 p.m. on a weekday, one on a weekday evening. Claims that lunch around noon is crowded or has a queue are hearsay and not counted. Five posts mention waiting chairs out front.
  • Twenty-two posts say it is close to the subway, almost all about a minute's walk from Ttukseom Station exit 7; one post alone says seven minutes. Seoul Forest Station is also walkable. No post mentions a bus.
  • Opening hours appear in 21 posts, all copied from listing blocks. Nineteen say daily 11:30 to 22:00 with a 15:00–17:00 break and last order at 21:00; one says 11:00 to 22:00 and one gives weekdays 11:00–21:00, weekends 11:00–22:00. A May 2 post's 11:00–21:00 came attached to a different address, so we set it aside. No post names a closing day.
  • Prices have moved. The platter was 19,900 won in an April 20, 2026 post and 20,900 won from a May 22 post onward, consistently from June. A menu shown in a May 29 post still had 19,900 won (and cream shrimp at 14,900 won), so we cannot pin the exact date; we take 20,900 won as current.
  • Seven posts give the same phone number, 0507-1444-9512. No one says whether reservations are taken; one post merely copied the number under a 'booking enquiries' label.
  • No post discloses sponsorship, but many of the 30 repeat the same lines — 'mala with real local flavour', the shop's own blurb about cutting grease and harshness — and the same order of platter, soup, cream shrimp and highball. We therefore set the praise aside and relied only on what was ordered, what it cost and what the room was like.
