Geunbon Seongsu is a cocktail bar in a basement on a lane by Ttukseom station. The licence reads 근본 소셜바; the sign and the Instagram account call it a social and solo-drinking bar. It opens at seven in the evening and closes at five the next morning. It bills itself as a social bar, where people drinking alone end up seated among people who came in twos, and its two signatures are a cocktail you order by strength alone, leaving the rest to the bartender, and a glass that arrives on fire. ₩12,000 to ₩16,000. Everything we read is from April and July 2026, and one April writer calls it less than a month old.

What sets it apart
- Five writers came alone, and five say much the same thing: that the awkwardness did not last. Staff who start a conversation without leaning on it. No shift in the air when you say you are by yourself. A writer who describes herself as shy, talked into being comfortable. Hours passing at the bar without anyone making her feel watched. Two of them locate the skill precisely: one is grateful the explanations were short, because more talk would have made it worse; the other says a room that is too attentive is as bad as one that ignores you, and this one found the middle. Three of those five, though, are posts that declare they were paid for. Two posts describe company, and both mean one other person — one was brought along by a friend, one came with an acquaintance. Not one post says whether there is a step at the door, or how many stairs there are. Three place it a floor down and one calls the flight small; that is the whole of it. Whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets in is nowhere in the seven. This is not a no; it is nobody having written it down. What we do not know
- Something to know first. Four of the seven posts we read declare that they were paid for — three say so in their opening line, one at the foot of the page. Only three do not. And of those four, three never name a drink or a price: what they leave behind is that there was whisky on the menu, that the writer cannot recall what she ate, that the glass arrived and she slowed down. The prices and the drinks on this page therefore come, in effect, from three posts. Disclosure is not the problem; knowing what you are reading is the point. The posts cluster in two bunches: five in one week of April 2026, two on a single day in July.
- It is one floor below street level, and three writers describe going down steps to it. Not a true basement, though: one calls it half-sunken, says it is not oppressive inside, and notes that you can see in from the pavement — people look down, then come down. Another found that the visibility from outside made going in easier. But how many steps there are, whether there is a lip at the door, whether there is a lift — none of the seven says. One calls the stairs small; that is all. Nor is there any mention of a wheelchair or a pushchair. This is not a no; it is nobody having written it down.
- When it opened does not square with the register. An April 2026 post calls it less than a month old, while the business licence dates from May 2022. There may have been another bar at the address, or a change of hands, or the writer may simply have been wrong. We could not establish which. That everything we read comes from April and July 2026 is at least consistent with her. On hours, four of the seven agree — seven in the evening until five the next morning — and not one post names a closing day.
- No post says whether the toilet is inside the unit or shared with the building. One writer used it, and lists what she found set out: hand wash, hand cream, mouthwash, floss, hair ties, cotton pads, cotton buds — evidence of a proprietor paying attention, she thought. So we know there is one and that customers use it. Whether it is inside the basement unit, shared in the building, or separated by sex, none of the seven says. This is not a no; it is nobody having written it down.
