Eau de Vie is a cocktail and whisky bar down a few steps into a half-basement, in a lane off exit 5 at Ttukseom. There is no menu — say whether you want it sweet or sour, strong or not, and what you like the smell of, and the bartender decides. Seven in the evening until two, closed Sundays. Five posts note that the big window keeps the basement from feeling like one. Sixteen mention the cat figurines the owner has put everywhere. The posts we read run from November 2023 to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- There is no menu. Twenty-six of the twenty-nine posts say so — the most repeated fact about this bar, more than any drink in it. Instead of choosing you describe: sweet or sour, strong or light, a smell you like, or the name of a cocktail you already know. One writer is relieved not to have to pick; another was thrown by it at first. Four note that naming a drink works if the bottles are in, and one asked for a Last Word rebuilt on peated whisky and got it. The bar's Instagram doubles as the list, say two.
- All twenty-nine posts are, in part, about the bartender — inevitable when there is no menu, but the specifics repeat: explaining where a drink came from and who invented it (nine posts), moving you from what you like to something next to it (eight), lining up three whiskies to smell (two), a free glass at the end (four), tarot on weeknights (two). One contrasts it with the formality of a classic bar; seven say a beginner would be comfortable. Nobody found it too much.
- About twenty thousand won a glass. Across the twelve posts that give figures: classics ₩14,000–19,000, house drinks ₩20,000–21,000, whisky from ₩18,000. Two say to reckon on twenty. A December 2023 post and an August 2026 post give the same prices — no sign of a rise across the thirty-three months we read. Nobody calls it expensive; one says it is too cheap for what it is. A single post puts it higher, in the mid-to-late twenties.
- It is a half-basement, down a few steps. Ten posts say basement, several describing the descent. Not one finds it close or damp — five note the big window, which lets you see in from the lane and out from the bar. One writer insists on calling it a half-floor rather than a basement. Four mention incense burning near the door.
- The toilet is inside. Six posts say so, one pointing out that a half-basement usually shares one with the building. It is not split by sex — two say so, and both add that it is roomy and clean. Two remark on the hand soap.
- Seven posts are return visits. One writer has been coming since the soft opening; one since August 2022; one found it by accident on a birthday three years ago and has kept coming. Another logs every visit, and we read three of them — May, July and New Year's Eve. Four remark on how many of the other customers seem to be regulars.

No post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets in. Ten do say half-basement and several describe going down steps, so steps there are. How many, and whether there is another way, nobody writes.

What we do not know
- Five posts declare a sponsorship. Four carry the same sentence at the bottom, naming the agency that arranged it; one says so in its opening line. Four of the five fall between January and April 2024 — of the six posts we have from those four months, four were paid. Five other posts state that they paid for everything. The remaining nineteen say nothing either way. One post we collected turned out to be about a different shop on the floor above, at the same street address, and we removed it: our matching rule is the address, and an address cannot tell floors apart.
- The bar snack changed from pistachios to sunflower seeds. Every post up to March 2025 records pistachios; every post from April 2025 records seeds. Two writers, months apart and unknown to each other, give the same reason — a craze for Dubai chocolate had pushed the price of pistachios up. The later one had it from the owner: they went looking for a replacement and settled on sunflower seeds, deliberately large ones, because he likes a snack you fiddle with. They come with a little clipper, and five writers were shown how to use it. A July 2025 post has pistachios again, so it evidently varies.
- No food is sold, but you may bring your own — six posts say so, and the same posts give the limits: nothing soupy, nothing that smells. Instant noodles, fried chicken and pizza are the examples. Three suggest cheese, crisps or cake; one regular confesses to the same bag of potato snacks every time.
- It fills up. Nobody queued, but one writer watched a weekday evening go full with walk-ins; another expected a quiet Tuesday and found every bar seat taken; a third turned up on Christmas Eve without a booking and was told the tables were reserved but nine o'clock was fine. Four say bookings go through Instagram or the phone. There are about ten seats at the bar and two tables behind — and when the bartender is working alone the sofa seats are not used, so ring ahead if there are several of you.
- Two of the posts describe drinks that no longer exist. They were written for an April 2025 stamp rally across ten Seongsu bars, and cover the two cocktails made for it. Both say the drinks would end with the event; one asks in print for the strawberry-basil to stay. Both also note that the bartender, who prefers things dry, made them sweet on purpose for the occasion.
- One writer came alone — after work, and stayed for six drinks; even in that post it is the customer on the next stool who speaks up for her at one point. Yet eleven posts call it a good place to drink alone, and most of those were written by people who came with someone and noticed the solo drinkers beside them. Three came as a pair, ten with a group. That a counter of ten seats puts you in conversation with the bartender, several make clear.
