도믹스 Domix A one-chef Korean-fusion wine bar at the dead end of a Seongsu lane, where a bottle per table is compulsory

Western · Seongdong-gu, Seongsu-dong 1-ga

Updated · Published

Domix is a Korean-fusion wine bar on the ground floor of a red-brick building at the dead end of a residential lane in Seongsu. Chef Kim Do-yeon, who trained at Mingles — Korea's only three-star restaurant — cooks and serves alone. There are fourteen seats: a counter facing the open kitchen and two tables of four by the window, which is why people book (eighteen of our thirty did). One bottle of wine per table is compulsory and nothing is sold by the glass — the cheapest bottle is ₩80,000. The food is cheaper than that, mostly around ₩20,000, and it rewrites familiar Korean dishes: the three most-ordered are a potato pancake with sea-urchin butter (₩15,000), raw beef with mango on a laver crisp (₩18,000) and squid-ink-fried whelks over cold capellini (₩23,000). It opens at five in the evening, closes at ten, and shuts on Sundays (Saturdays it opens at four). It is a long way from any station — fifteen to twenty minutes' walk from Seongsu or Seoul Forest, and all eleven writers who raise it say so. There is no parking; people use the riverside public car park. We read posts from February 2023 to August 2026 — three and a half years.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. One bottle per table is compulsory, and nothing is sold by the glass. Fourteen writers say so — the single most repeated fact about this place. The bottle prices actually recorded are ₩80,000, ₩90,000, ₩95,000 and ₩120,000, with one writer putting the cheapest on the list at about ₩80,000. The rule weighs more the fewer of you there are: one bottle for two, one bottle for four. A 2023 writer never asked the price and got a shock at the till — ₩120,000. One regular states the cost of the rule plainly: with a bottle compulsory and most of her friends no longer drinking, it is getting hard to find anyone to come with. Corkage appears in one post only — ₩50,000 for one bottle once you have bought one (July 2025) — so a bottle of your own can be opened after theirs. And a party with non-drinkers is not shut out: in December 2025 the chef poured non-alcoholic fizz, free, for a pregnant guest and a friend who does not drink. That was a kindness on one night, not a policy. You can leave the choosing to them: eleven took a recommendation and none regretted it, and two note that if nothing on the list suits, you can say what you like and something else appears.
  2. The chef cooks and serves alone, and the counter puts you right in front of him. Ten writers mention the open kitchen and four that he runs the place single-handed — one marvels that he stayed kind while cooking and looking after the room at once; another advises booking precisely because one person means few seats. This layout explains the service: thirteen writers call it kind, and they describe the same things — wine poured whenever a glass empties, water kept topped up, instructions for eating the potato pancake and the urchin butter in the right order, help choosing a bottle. Eight were given something free: chocolate mousse five times, a salad twice, the raw beef once, cheese once — and one new year, a bowl of oyster rice-cake soup each. If you are wondering whether sitting that close is awkward, one writer has answered it: he is right there and never once looks at you, she says, because he is concentrating on the food — so do not worry about it. Though she also admits she tried to catch his eye to order more, failed, and had to call out.
  3. The chef's name and his background are in the posts — but only in two of them. In August 2025 a writer names Kim Do-yeon and says he came from Mingles, at the time the only three-Michelin-star restaurant in Korea, and is now working out his own cooking in this lane. In April 2026 another says she came because she had heard a Mingles-trained chef was hidden deep in a Seongsu alley — she went because of the story. We cannot verify it: neither writer says she heard it from the chef himself. We keep it because it is the only place in thirty posts where anyone explains why the food is like this. The other twenty-eight simply say the combinations are new: the menu names give you no idea what will arrive; nothing is ordinary, which one puts down to a fine-dining background. No writer connects the shop's name to the chef's.

Getting inside

Toilet inside1 of 28 posts

Not one of the thirty says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets in. None of the words appear. What is certain is that it is on the ground floor of a red-brick building at the end of a lane — nobody records the width of the doorway or a step. The lane is narrow: the one writer who drove found it hard going for an inexperienced driver, and another recommends walking from the bus stop because of it. Most of the seating is at a counter, with only two tables of four, so how much floor there is to move in we cannot say. One writer, in November 2023, noted that the toilet is indoors, and in the three years since nobody has mentioned a toilet at all — accessible or otherwise. This is "nobody wrote it down", not "you cannot get in".

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • It is a long walk from any station — all eleven writers who mention it say so, and not one calls it close. The figures given: 1.2km and seventeen minutes from exit 3 at Seongsu, 1.2km and seventeen minutes from exit 2 at Seoul Forest, twenty minutes on foot from Seongsu. The most honest sentence is this one: she took a taxi there and walked back, and while it is walkable, she reckons she would have been annoyed about it on an empty stomach (November 2023). One writer describes the location in someone else's review — that Domix is not near a station, which made finding a second stop afterwards awkward. The bus is better: the nearest stop is 200 metres and three minutes away, served by the 2014, 2224, 2412 and 2413. Two writers came by bus from Seoul Forest. Do not worry about finding the lane — "a wine bar *here*?" appears more than ten times, but nobody reports getting lost. It is a red-brick building with a small wooden sign. Driving is another matter: the one writer who came by car found the lane too narrow for a nervous driver.
  • Accounts of the price split, and the reason is clear: some are talking about the food and some about the wine. The three who call it cheap mean the plates — around ₩20,000 each, which one writer says leaves no reason not to come; another calls the cooking reasonably priced; a third is amazed at the quality of a ₩7,000 salad. The two who call it expensive mean the bottles: the cheapest at about ₩80,000 struck one as a little steep, and a 2023 writer never asked and got a shock at the till — ₩120,000. She adds that, not being much of a drinker, she cannot see how a bottle costs that, and advises readers plainly: ask the price first. So the sentence we can offer is this: plates around ₩20,000, wine from ₩80,000, one bottle per table compulsory. A 2025 receipt for two people — four dishes and a bottle — came to ₩142,000. Food prices have barely moved in three and a half years: the beef at ₩18,000, the potato pancake at ₩15,000, the whelks at ₩23,000 and the prawns at ₩21,000 are unchanged from 2024 to 2026. Where the price is higher, the dish is new — the roe pasta at ₩35,000 and the pork at ₩36,000 both arrived after 2025.
  • There are only fourteen seats — seven writers call the room small and none calls it roomy. The exact count comes from July 2025: fourteen seats in all, two tables of four and six places at the counter, which is why she recommends booking ahead. Everyone counts slightly differently: six or seven counter seats and two tables (February 2024); two round window tables and eight to ten at the counter (June 2024); two tables and the rest all counter (January 2026). This is why booking is the condition here: eighteen booked, and one warns that with two or more of you it is essential, because there may be nothing left on the day. For same-day tables, four writers say the phone or an Instagram message is faster than the online system. More than four is difficult — the two tables are far apart, so a larger group is awkward; one party of five booked ahead and were seated together. Small is not always written as a fault: two find it private precisely because it is small, and four call it quiet. Nobody reports waiting — three found the room empty early on a weekday, and one marks the turn: quiet from five to six, full by seven.
  • Our reading covers three and a half years — the longest span in this list — so we can see what has changed. Three things. First, the closing days shrank. The four posts from February 2023 to February 2024 say the shop shuts on Sundays *and* Mondays; the sixteen from June 2024 to August 2026 say Sundays only. The periods do not overlap, so the likely reading is that it started opening on Mondays — though that is our inference from the posts, not something the shop announced. Second, the menu moves. In the summer of 2024 the ₩13,000 crushed-egg dish came off and a ₩25,000 ragù pasta went on: three writers record the same exchange that season, told the egg was off today and offered the ragù instead. From autumn 2025 the roe pasta, the ceviche and the pork appear. Even the crisp under the raw beef changed — brown rice until spring 2025, laver after. In September 2025 a writer relays her cousin's verdict: she came a few times about two years ago, and the menu has shifted a little since. Third, the prices have barely moved: beef ₩18,000, potato pancake ₩15,000, whelks ₩23,000, prawns ₩21,000, the same for three years. So the price is the thing you can plan for here and the menu is not — look at the Instagram or the listing before you go.
  • No post declares a sponsorship. Thirty posts, twenty-nine people. Ten state they paid their own way, and one was a dinner bought by a younger friend — that is the post which records the chef's background. The other nineteen say nothing about money. Only one blogger appears twice, and it is the same visit: a monthly round-up on 5 January 2026 and the proper review on the 6th, so we counted the claims only on the second. One more post, a "best three in Seongsu" round-up, summarises the writer's own earlier review, so we left its claims empty and took only three prices from it. There is no shared agency copy here. But the search turned up something worth knowing: comparing all thirty in 22-character slices, the highest-scoring pair came out at 9.3% — and on inspection every matching fragment was the boilerplate of an embedded Instagram card. The two posts are two and a half years apart by different bloggers, and not one sentence of their own writing overlaps. Where posts carry embedded link previews, that number cannot be taken at face value.
  • Here is every complaint we found — four in thirty posts, and each about something different. The smell: in February 2024 a writer arrived as the first customer after opening and found the room smelled faintly of drains, which she put down to the age of the neighbourhood; once the cooking started, she adds, it stopped mattering. No other post mentions it. The quantity: in May 2024, four of them found the plates disappeared after a bite each. Several others note that the portions push you into ordering more dishes. The roe pasta: a regular calls it merely ordinary and advises ordering the inventive dishes instead — a verdict on the most expensive pasta here, at ₩35,000. The chocolate mousse: in September 2025 a writer found the fried-crêpe version too rich, and hunted for the gochujang everyone talks about without finding it. The other twenty-six posts have nothing critical in them — read that bias alongside the rest.
  • Not one post writes about floors or stairs. Twenty-six of the twenty-eight place it on the ground floor of the red-brick building, or simply copy the address, but nobody says whether there is a step or a stair at the door. Two posts mention a second floor; both are about other places entirely.
