Daylit Seongsu is a small fusion restaurant one floor below ground at 39 Sangwon 1-gil, one to three minutes' walk from exit 7 of Ttukseom station. You go down a staircase beneath a burger-and-taco place in the alley; two writers admit they walked past the entrance first. It takes familiar Korean things and puts them where you do not expect — a futomaki rolled in aged kimchi instead of seaweed, udon in cream cut with chilli oil, pork trotter flashed over flame onto hand-cut noodles. It opens at half past eleven every day and closes at half past nine, shutting on weekdays between half past two and five. Three-leaf clovers turn up all over the room, and one writer passes on the reason: if the four-leaf kind means luck, the ordinary three-leaf kind means happiness. There are branches in Yongsan, Gangnam and two department stores, but this is the original.

  **The dish this restaurant is known for — all twenty-one writers who mention it ate it.** 13,800 won, six pieces. It is a futomaki rolled in aged kimchi instead of seaweed, filled with raw beef, perilla leaf and rice. Several call it their single favourite, and two give instructions: put the whole piece in your mouth, and do not bite it in half. **A black powder comes with it and the posts cannot agree what it is** — two say house-made sesame mix, two say perilla powder, one gives up and calls it the black stuff; all agree it makes the roll nuttier. Two writers use it to cut through the richer dishes. One, sharing with a friend, was sorry to get only three pieces.

  **Twelve writers ate it, at 14,800 won.** Pork trotter stir-fried over flame with peppers, cabbage and chives, on **hand-cut daoxiao noodles**. The noodles get the most attention: broad, uneven, chewy in different ways along their length. **They disagree about the heat** — one finds it mild enough for anyone, another warns off people who struggle with Shin ramyun, a third describes it as sweet at first and creeping up behind. **It comes with coriander**, which you can ask them to leave out. One writer was told by staff not to stir it. One found it a let-down against its name; others report that nearly every table has one.

  **Twelve ate it, at 16,800 won — the most expensive of the main dishes.** Cream sauce with jambon, prawns and sun-dried tomato, **on udon noodles**. The refrain is that it is thick without being heavy, and two writers explain why: there is chilli oil through it. Two describe it as a western take on udon broth and admit to finishing the sauce with a spoon. An egg yolk sits on top. **One writer ordered it on a day she had been out in the heat and left most of it**, wishing she had chosen something cold.

  **Seven ate it, at 18,800 won — the highest price on the menu.** A thick bed of shredded potato under cheese and pepperoni; one writer identifies the sauce as butter-garlic mayonnaise. **This is the dish they argue about.** One makes it her reason to return; one likes how the potato takes the salt out of the pepperoni; one prizes the scorched underside. Against them, one writer says plainly that she cannot see where the money went, and that at that thickness the pancake loses its crispness; another finds it cloying after a while.

  **Five of our writers ordered a set.** Set A is built for two, set B for three or four: the signature dishes plus one main of your choosing. **Set A has gone up in price** — 45,400 won in June (plus a thousand to swap in the trotter noodles), 46,400 in September. Set B is 78,200 and came as the kimchi roll, the mala rice-cake pot, the lemon chicken with fried seaweed, and the jambon cream noodles. Their reasons for choosing a set are the same each time: it is the only way to try the famous dishes at once, it saves you deciding, and it balances the rich dishes against the sharp ones. The three who shared set B reckoned it was really enough for four.

  **What comes free is short**: pickled cucumber and pickled radish in two accounts, dressed cucumber and radish in another, coriander in a fourth — there to cut the richness when you tire of it. **The water is not water.** One writer is grateful for the barley tea, which she says settles food this heavy; another can only report that it was yellow and she does not know what it was; a third, there on a hot day, notes they put ice in it. Wet wipes and cutlery are laid out before you sit.

  **Four ate it, at 18,800 won.** Not the usual tsuyu-based chicken nanban: the sauce is sweet with mango and sharp with mustard. Two writers say to eat it with the cabbage underneath, which the sauce has pickled. **The portions are generous** — one counted six or seven large pieces. In one party it was the dish the friend liked best.

  Highballs and drinks

  **In the evening it works as a drinking place.** Three writers ordered highballs — plum, citrus and cucumber. **They also sell soju**, which one writer notes is unusual for a place like this, where the drinks list is often highballs only (it is Saero, and only Saero). **There is no draught beer**: the writer who ordered a bottle says she missed it. Otherwise there is plum juice and sikhye. Nobody records what any of it costs.

  **Three ate it, and nobody records a price.** A rosé-mala sauce loaded with **rice cake and scorched rice**, with enoki, quail eggs, tofu skin, glass noodles and cabbage; the rice cake is cut at the table with scissors. One writer pins it down as neither a soup nor a stir-fry but something thick in between. It draws the strongest praise in the whole corpus — one says this single mouthful explained the restaurant's reputation, another that it would convert someone who dislikes mala. **The dish has changed name**: a writer who ate it last year had it with pork belly and grilled rice cake, and says it has since moved towards braised chicken. One wished she had ordered rice with it.

  **The one dish with broth — two writers ate it, at 15,800 won.** One says it tastes nothing like the beef noodle soup the name suggests: brisket and bulgogi in a broth, with noodles closer to a soupy pasta. The other files it as a fusion jjamppong, good without being remarkable. **It is the only thing on the menu to order when you want soup**, which one writer worked out too late on a hot day.

  **The cheapest side at 8,800 won; two writers ate it.** A seaweed roll full of mozzarella that pulls into strings, under a heavy drift of mayonnaise sauce. One found it unexpectedly like takoyaki and was happy. **The other thought the sauce too sweet and too much, and said it went soggy quickly.**

  **Two ate it, at 13,800 won.** One calls it a straightforward omurice, the other simply recommends it. It is one of the few rice dishes here.

  **Two ate it, both as part of a set, and neither gives a price.** Shredded chicken dressed with lemon and chilli paste — a starter to sharpen the appetite rather than a dish to remember, as one of them says outright, though she liked the crisp fried seaweed served with it.

This is not a place to drive to. Eight posts say there is no car park, but most are copying the listing, so we counted only the two writers who actually had to put a car somewhere else. What those two leave behind is useful: one names the Seongsu Culture Centre car park and the SOL Building car park; the other could only say she supposed a public car park nearby would do. Nobody says what parking cost them. Six writers point out that it is one to three minutes on foot from Ttukseom station.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Not one of these posts says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. The words do not appear anywhere in the twenty-five. Several establish that it is a basement reached by stairs, and that is all: whether there is any other way in, we do not know. One writer did arrive with a pushchair and did not get in — in Seoul with a fifteen-month-old, she found nowhere that would take them and a queue everywhere, so she ordered the food to take away, and wrote afterwards that it would have been better eaten in the restaurant. What stopped her, though, was the queue and not the stairs.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

When the posts appeared

What we do not know

• There is nowhere good to wait, because the restaurant is underground and the queue is not. One writer reports being sent up to the ground floor because the doorway is too narrow; another found no waiting area at all and stood awkwardly on the stairs; a third points out that the line is outdoors and unbearable in high summer. The one who queued on the stairs in the rain remembers the heat and the damp. There are chairs — four writers mention them, and one a fan as well. So several of them arrive at the same tactic: join the list, then walk to a café or a pop-up nearby and come back when you are called. It is worth factoring in if you are choosing this place in July or January.
• It is one floor below ground, reached by a staircase, and nobody mentions a lift. Twelve writers place it underground and one calls the basement a deep one. The entrance is beneath a burger-and-taco place, the sign is small, and two writers say they could not find the door at first — though another found the little sign obvious enough. Nobody records how many steps there are, how wide they are, or whether there is a handrail. For what it is worth, the same company's Yongsan branch is up a steep flight of stairs — but that is a different restaurant.
• Nothing in these posts is about the toilets. In a basement restaurant it matters whether they are inside, shared with the building, or separate for men and women — and we do not know. The word does not appear once in the twenty-five.
• A search for Daylit turns up five restaurants. Seongsu is the original; there are branches in Yongsan, Gangnam and two Hyundai department stores, and they do not serve the same food. The Pangyo branch has an apple-and-cheese omurice and a cold octopus noodle soup, and does not have Seongsu's potato pancake, mango-mustard chicken or mala rice-cake pot. Even the signature roll differs: Seongsu wraps raw beef in aged kimchi, Pangyo grills the beef first. Two writers have eaten both, and both prefer the Seongsu roll — one found the grilled version dry, the other found hers falling apart and short of what she remembered. The hours differ too: the department-store branches run 10:30 to 20:00 and close when the store closes. Everything priced and timed on this page is Seongsu's.
• Most writers find it fair; one flatly does not. Five of them say the food is worth what it costs, that Seongsu rarely offers this much for the money, or that portions here are generous by the neighbourhood's standards. Against them, one calls Seongsu prices a nuclear strike, and in the same post says the food has turned sweeter than she remembers and that she wants the restaurant she first ate at back. One more takes aim at a single dish: at 18,800 won the potato pancake is the most expensive thing on the menu and she cannot see why. Two writers advise ordering three dishes between two people, which puts a couple at somewhere near forty to forty-five thousand won.
• The kitchen is filling delivery orders at the same time as yours. One writer puts the slow service down to that; another had her order lost altogether — nothing arrived, she asked, and the staff apologised with a free drink. A third timed the wait at about fifteen minutes. Only two of the twenty-five say the food was slow, so this is not the ordinary experience.
