Dami is an indoor pocha serving Korean drinking food on the ground floor of 13-1 Wangsimni-ro 4-gil, one to five minutes' walk from exit 7 of Ttukseom station. The sign burns bright in the middle of the eating alley behind the station; inside, the room turns an L, with tables for two, four and six. There is seating out front. The food is what you order because you are drinking — stir-fried octopus with noodles, a whole squid in spicy broth, another stuffed with scorched rice and fried, grilled tripe — and the makgeolli list is long. It opens at five and closes at one in the morning, except Saturday, when it closes at midnight; Sunday it is shut. Kimchi and bean sprouts arrive with the water and they will refill them. There is another Dami, at Seongsu station, and it is not this one.

  Makgeolli, soju and draught beer₩5,000

  **All five of our writers drank — this is a place you eat at because you are drinking.** One prices Chamisul, Cass and draught beer at 5,000 won each. **The makgeolli list is long**: one writer notes how much of it there is and that the other tables were on makgeolli and soju, and drank Jipyeong makgeolli and Jinro Gold himself. **You can ask for a kettle** — if you are drinking makgeolli they will bring one, which is the single most useful line in these five posts. One mentions traditional spirits as well, and one says they pour a good head on the draught. Two drank soju, or soju with beer in it.

  **Kimchi and bean sprouts land with the water as soon as you sit** — three writers record it and all three agree. **They refill them**: one says they tasted enough like home cooking that she asked several times. One drinks the first glass against them while the food is coming; another found they made a plain bowl of ramyeon worth eating. **It is the only thing three of these five describe identically.**

  **15,000 won, eaten by one of our writers**, and listed on the board outside (two mention that board). **It arrives in an earthenware pot rather than on a burner**, which the writer prefers: it stays hot longer. Not as fierce as the name promises, she says, but an easy stew to drink alongside — and the one to pick if you like soft curds.

  **A seasonal dish.** The writer who ate it in April had to look up whether it was still in season — cockles run from November into early spring — and ordered on the strength of that. No price recorded. It heads the board outside, which suggests it comes forward in winter.

  **16,000 won, and the one writer who ate it called it the pick of the night** — the rice cakes, she says, are improbably chewy. It comes in an earthenware pot and stays hot. The sauce is sharp and sweet and she found it addictive, better still spooned up with the rice cake as something to drink against; she would order fried things next time just to dip them in it. It is on the board outside too.

  **A whole squid stuffed with scorched rice and fried hard.** No price recorded; it is on the board outside, and one writer ate it. He had eaten the dish in Gangneung, which gives him a yardstick: not quite the specialist's version, he says, but about ninety per cent of the way there — a plump squid and the rice crisped right through, for the range of textures. Dip it in the soy sauce that comes with it. **A rejected post praises the same dish more warmly**, but that was the other branch.

  **One writer finished with it and is honest about it**: nothing special, but good. What she adds is the useful part — the kimchi and the bean sprouts are good enough that they carry the bowl.

  **One writer ate it and did not record the price.** He ordered it with soju at an outdoor table, and says he is the sort to feel cheated when a stir-fried octopus dish is short on octopus — this one was not. The noodles come with it to be mixed in, and he makes the case that this is a dish you have to eat out rather than assemble at home. **A rejected post mentions it too** — but that one was about the other branch, so it is not counted here.

  **One writer ordered it second, after clearing the octopus.** No price recorded. A whole squid with mussels, crab and prawns in it; the writer, who says he loves dried squid and hates squid soup, could not work out why this one tasted as good as it did. It was what he wanted after something spicy — a broth to follow.

  **16,000 won, one writer.** She thought the portion generous enough to make the price look good. **The cucumber is what makes it** — acorn jelly can taste of nothing but its own faint bitterness, and the cucumber keeps it bright; perilla leaf through it adds the rest. Plenty of vegetables: the thing to order when you want something clean.

  **13,000 won, the dish to end on — and the only price anyone here grumbles about.** The bowl was deep enough that she expected two layers of tomato and found **ice underneath**; had it been tomato all the way down, she says, she would not have questioned the price. It did at least come colder. What it is for: clearing the mouth at the end, or something to keep picking at without filling up.

  **One writer ate it twice — the only dish anyone here came back for.** No price recorded. He had ordered it on an earlier visit, liked it enough to order it again, and calls it their first pick: spicy, with no offal smell at all, and chewy. Good with the rice balls you make yourself and good on its own, and he thinks it goes particularly well with beer.

  **Ordered as something light by someone already full from dinner, and it surprised her.** No price recorded. A thick omelette with spring onion, carrot and a lot of cheese — she had expected nothing of it and says so, and it was not as rich as it sounds.

  **There is a board of signature dishes on the wall outside** (two writers mention it). Some of what is on it **none of these five has eaten**: the grilled fish, the whelk salad, the tofu-and-kimchi. One writer says she wants to try the grilled mackerel, the pancakes and the pork cartilage next time — wanting is not eating. **A rejected post does describe eating the mackerel, the tofu-and-kimchi and the whelks — but that was the other branch.** The menu divides into pancakes, stews and stir-fries: Korean drinking food throughout.

Parking

2 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Not a place to drive to. Both writers who raise parking say there is none — one just writes "difficult" and sends you to the subway instead. Neither says where you could put a car; no alternative car park is named. Three of them came by train: one to five minutes from exit 7 of Ttukseom station, depending on who is counting, and close to Seoul Forest station on the Suin-Bundang line as well. One party chose the restaurant for that reason — one of them was going home on line 2, one finished work in Seongsu, and the third could reach Seoul Forest without changing, so they looked for somewhere near Ttukseom.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. None of those words appears in the five. We know it is a ground floor entered from the alley and no more: whether there is a lip at the door, we do not know. And the five matters here — this is the silence of five writers, not of twenty-five. If it matters, ring and ask.

When the posts appeared

What we do not know

• The name will not get you to the right door. Two things to watch. First, there is another Dami fifteen minutes' walk away — Dami Seongsu-yeok, at 11 Achasan-ro 7-gil, 197 metres from exit 1 of Seongsu station. This one is Dami Ttukseom-yeok, at 13-1 Wangsimni-ro 4-gil, and the two open an hour apart: four o'clock there, five here. One writer has been to both and prefers this one for its atmosphere. The other is sometimes called The Dami and gets written up as a place that has kept Seongsu's look from twenty years ago. Check the address or the phone number; the name will not tell them apart. Second, most of what a search returns is not this restaurant at all. Of the twenty-one posts our collection confirmed, five were written by someone who ate here. The rest were the other branch, four unrelated restaurants whose names contain the same two syllables, and eight posts in which Dami is a person.
• The toilet is inside the restaurant and it is not separated by sex. Two writers say so and they agree. One calls it the thing that matters most in a drinking place, notes that it is kept clean and indoors, and marks the shared arrangement as the drawback. The other makes the same two points: shared, but you do not have to go out of the building for it. In an alley bar both halves of that are worth knowing. Both found it clean.
• Not one of the five says anything about queueing — not that they waited, and not that they walked in. Two do say the room filled up: one, on a weekday evening, found the place filling and stayed for more food because of it; another could not photograph the interior because every table was taken. That nobody waited in a full room might mean they were lucky, or might mean this is a place with no queue and no list at all — we do not know. Nobody mentions booking either.
• Ground floor, straight in from the alley. Nobody mentions stairs, an upper floor or a basement. One writer says the sign is bright enough in the middle of the alley that you cannot miss it; another was pulled in by the look of the outside. No one says it is hard to find. The room turns an L, is "not especially large", and mixes tables for two, four and six, so a pair or a group can both be seated. Nobody says whether there is a step at the door. For what it is worth, the same street number holds other restaurants, including one upstairs — this is the ground-floor one.
• We have read five people, and that comes first. The collection turned up 385 posts, twenty-one survived verification, and sixteen of those turned out to belong to somewhere else — that is what happens when the name is two common syllables. So much of what is priced and timed on this page rests on one writer, or two: one wrote down prices, three wrote down opening hours, two described the toilet, three mentioned the outdoor tables. Only three facts here come from more than two of them — that it shuts on Sunday, that it opens at five, and that the kimchi and bean sprouts arrive first. Read the rest as one person's word, because that is what it is.
