대돈집 Daedonjip a Jeju pork house where the stone grill tilts and the staff do the cooking

Korean · Seongdong-gu, Seongsu-dong 1-ga

Updated · Published

A Jeju pork house cooking over stone, two minutes from exit 1 at Ttukseom station, down the lane behind the Blue Bottle. The staff grill for you — eleven writers say so — laying kimchi, bean sprouts, mushroom, onion and potato down beside the meat. The grill tips at the push of a button so the fat runs to the low end, and that is where the kimchi cooks. A 170g serving is ₩15,000, and you finish with fried rice: nine ordered it and none regretted it. At lunch it turns into a rice house, serving stir-fried pork, squid and kimchi stew for under ten thousand won, with banchan that changes by the day. In the evening it belongs to office parties — six writers came with colleagues, and one describes a quiet residential lane that fills up after dark. What we read spans six years, from June 2020 to September 2026, so what follows records the changes too.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. They grill for you — until they are too busy, and then you get the tongs. Eleven writers describe being cooked for, and it is a reason people choose the place: one liked not having to watch the timing, another admits she cannot grill at all. But one post states the rule outright: they normally cook everything, and when it is busy you do it yourself. A 2021 account is blunter — with one or two people serving and grilling at once, the cooking suffered, and she advises doing it yourself. A 2020 visitor found they laid the meat down and then only managed the flame. Regulars take the tongs by choice, and one of them catches what the place is really like: two pairs of tongs come as standard, which no other grill house she knows does — a restaurant that cooks for you, laying out tongs for two. Between rounds, someone comes and scrapes the stone clean.
  2. The sign outside says clean Jeju pork, and the shop posts an origin notice. Three writers read that notice and came away with different answers. The oldest post, from June 2020, says she went in on the strength of the name and felt let down: the notice gave the pork as American and domestic. From 2021 to 2026, twenty-five posts say Jeju without qualification, and two 2026 writers describe the same notice approvingly — one noting that a good share is domestic, which she credits for the banchan. We do not say which is right. There is no reason the board one person read in 2020 is the board two people read in 2026, and suppliers change over six years. What is certain is that the notice is posted, and that three people read it. If it matters to you, read it yourself on the way in.

Parking

6 posts say you can park; 2 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Parking is a couple of spaces in front of the shop, which is why the posts disagree. Five say it is possible but hedge — one advising a phone call first since there is no car park as such, another simply saying to ask. Two say plainly there is none, one of them recommending you leave the car at home. Only one writer actually drove, and she parked in a public lot nearby and walked. This is not a contradiction so much as two spaces and the luck of the day. Nine writers put it two minutes from exit 1 at Ttukseom station; take the subway.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1

Nobody writes about wheelchair or pushchair access. None of the twenty-six mentions a ramp or a step. Several establish that it is on the ground floor, entered straight from the lane, and that it is not large — three of them count around ten tables for four. One notes there are no high chairs, which is not the same question. Call 0507-1408-9293.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The prices and hours below span several years. The twenty-six posts run from June 2020 to September 2026, and almost everything moved at least once: the belly from ₩14,000 to ₩15,000; the jowl, added in 2023, from ₩17,000 to ₩18,000; the steamed egg from ₩3,000 to ₩5,000; the kimchi stew from ₩7,000 to ₩9,000. Closing crept earlier, from 23:00 in 2020 through 22:30 to 22:00 by 2026. The several rows in the table are not errors but different years — confirm before you go (0507-1408-9293). Saturday is different. It opens in the afternoon, but at 15:00 in the 2024 posts and 16:00 in the 2026 ones. Sunday is closed, on which fourteen agree. The afternoon break, 15:00–17:00, is given by seven writers — all of them from 2022 onwards. It was refitted in 2023. Two regulars note it within months of each other, one adding that it seemed busier afterwards. The stone was replaced at the same time, and it spits more fat than the old one. Not everyone leaves happy. Two visitors nine days apart in March 2023 both marked it down: one calls it an ordinary neighbourhood belly house she would not return to, the other says the pork and the fried rice were both unremarkable and that he does not see what the fuss is about. The 2020 writer said much the same. All three are counted. Small things. There are no high chairs — a parent of a four-year-old managed, and says anyone with a younger child would not. There are no private rooms. One 2023 post places the toilet outside the restaurant and shared between sexes — there was a refit after that, so we do not know whether it still holds. Small dogs are allowed on Saturdays only, with weekdays by phone, according to two posts we excluded from the count — so treat that as unconfirmed. Three writers report that Naver takes bookings.
  • Nobody writes about floors or stairs. The address is the ground floor and all twenty-six posts leave it there. No one mentions an upstairs. What is recorded of the room: tables only, no private rooms; about ten tables for four; ducting running across the ceiling; and a meat-ageing fridge out in the dining room. A 2021 writer counted seven tables for four and four for two — there has been a refit since, so the count may differ now.
  • Nobody reports queueing, and two writers chose the place precisely because it does not have one. A 2021 visitor picked it as the Seongsu restaurant without a line; a 2026 writer found no wait at six on a Saturday evening and puts it down to an office crowd that thins at weekends. Two weekday lunch visits were the same. The room does fill, though: one party took the last table on a weekday evening and watched people start waiting behind them, and another describes a quiet lane that turns busy after dark. So: crowded on weekday evenings, easy at weekends — a place that lives off office parties. Three writers note that Naver takes bookings, which is worth using for an evening group.
