Bangasil Yeontan-gui

방아실 연탄구이 By the owner's own telling, Bangasil is a lakeside village by Daecheong Lake whose name reads as 'a hill as pretty as flowers' (芳阿); yeontan-gui means meat grilled over coal briquettes.

Compiled from 17 blog posts read in fullSources →

Bangasil Yeontan-gui is a coal-briquette pork grill at 38 Wangsimni-ro 2-gil in Seongdong-gu, between Seoul Forest and Ttukseom stations. In the evening the pork — doenjang-marinated (16,000 won for 160 g), bone-in 'axe rib' belly (20,000 won for 180 g), plain belly (17,000 won for 180 g) — is seared once over coal and finished on a grill at your table; at lunch it serves gochujang pork stir-fry (10,000 won), pork-and-squid stir-fry (12,000 won) and stews as specials (prices from the August 2025 menu). We read 30 posts dated 15 July 2025 to 1 October 2026, set aside 5 about other restaurants, and 19 describe actually eating here. The doenjang pork and the lunch gochujang stir-fry were each ordered in 6 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Despite the name, there is no coal brazier at each table. Three posts say the meat is seared once over coal in the kitchen and finished on the table grill. One diner who expected their own coal fire was surprised, and timed the seared meat at about three minutes after ordering.
  2. It is a weekday-lunch place for colleagues. Four posts came as a group with coworkers (one company dinner, three lunches). Two noted each table has two burners, so the stir-fry and kimchi stew can cook side by side; a party of five ordered four portions of gochujang stir-fry and one kimchi stew.
  3. Four posts found the room larger than expected. One describes a second space behind the main hall with about three small tables; a solo lunch visitor found it almost empty at noon.
  4. Lettuce wraps and side dishes are refilled on request, according to three posts — one simply asked for more lettuce. A fourth post was unclear about how refills worked after the first serving.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 17 posts read)

No post describes the floor or any stairs from experience; only the registered address says ground floor.

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. That means nobody wrote about it, not that access is impossible.

Only one post (July 2025) mentions the toilet: outside the dining room but apparently for the restaurant's use only. Nobody said whether it is split by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 23 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2025-08-252 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Posts split on who does the grilling. Two posts from July and 10 September 2025 grilled their own meat (one warns the flame is set high, so turn it down); three posts from 14 September 2025 to August 2026 say the owner or staff grilled and cut it for them — one adds that it may have been because the place was quiet. We can't tell whether the practice changed or it depends on the day.
  • Opinions differ on whether the lunch gochujang stir-fry is hot: two posts said not spicy, one realised it was spicy only after eating. One post says the pork-and-squid version lets you choose the heat level.
  • None of our posts waited here: three walked straight in (two at lunch, one on a Saturday evening). One only repeats hearsay that it has a queue. Two posts ended up here because the line at Daeyeop, the naengmyeon place next door, was too long.
  • Opening hours vary by date. Five posts from July–September 2025 give 11:30–22:00 daily (last order 21:30); a visit in October and a post in December 2025 give 10:00–22:00; one August 2026 post gives 11:00–22:00 (last order 21:15). All agree on a 15:00–17:00 break. No post mentions a closing day. Most of these were copied into info boxes, so check before going.
  • Prices mostly come from posts that copied the August 2025 menu. The vegetable bibim side rose from 5,000 won (July–August 2025) to 6,000 won (September 2025), and the coal-grilled bulgogi lunch special was 12,000 won in July 2026. On value, two posts called lunch good for the money (about 10,000 won a head); one said the only drawback of the evening doenjang pork was the price.
  • Four posts list the same phone number, 02-498-1994. No post actually made a reservation; one only repeats in a tips section that phone bookings are accepted.
  • Several posts say the owner is Ko Seok-hyun from Netflix's Culinary Class Wars and that his company also runs Daeyeop next door; that is hearsay and press, so we did not count it. 'Certified Korean pork' and 'praised by chef Lee Won-il' are the restaurant's own claims. Six posts — a video recap, copied info blocks, and generic text with no prices or times — were not counted as visits.
