Geondae Myeolchi Guksu

건대멸치국수 Anchovy noodles by Konkuk University — a 1991 shop on the taxi-canteen stretch of Achasan-ro that serves somyeon in clear anchovy-and-kelp broth until four in the morning.

Geondae Myeolchi Guksu is a noodle shop on the Achasan-ro main road, halfway between Konkuk University station and Guui station. The sign and the posts date it to 1991. The board holds six noodle dishes and one kind of gimbap; the house bowl is somyeon in a clear broth drawn from anchovy and kelp. Seven thousand won a bowl, three and a half for a roll, so noodles and gimbap together come to a little over ten thousand. It is open until four in the morning and closed on Sundays. This is a street of taxi-driver canteens, and the room fills with drivers, office workers and Konkuk students together. The posts we read run from September 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. One wall is covered in signed celebrity boards. Eleven of the thirteen mention it and nobody disputes it. One writer is taken aback that a noodle shop should have so many; several name the faces. More than one treats the wall as the proof that the place is old. Nobody says how old the signatures themselves are.
  2. The bowls are big. Eight say so and nobody says otherwise: one is startled without having ordered large, another finds the standard bowl fills two people, a third calls it simply heavy. One writer advises two people to split a single roll of gimbap, because ordering one each leaves noodles behind. A large bowl costs a thousand won more, and not one of the thirteen ordered it.
  3. Seven thousand won for noodles, three and a half for a roll. Seven posts call it cheap and none calls it dear. The figures are scattered from September 2024 to March 2026 and the noodle prices never move: 7,000 for the anchovy bowl, 7,500 for the cold mixed and the kimchi ones, 8,000 for young radish, 10,000 for soy. One writer notes that even the large bowl keeps the bill under ten thousand. Two mention being asked to pay cash or by transfer for anything under five thousand won.
  4. A walk from exit 4 at Konkuk University station — four hundred and fifty metres by one account, five hundred by another, ten minutes by a third. Two add that you can walk from Guui instead, since the shop sits on the main road roughly between the two. One came by bus and names the stop. One notes the route is nearly a straight line. The sign is yellow, which another writer expects makes it easy to spot after dark.
  5. It is a small room. Three call it small and none calls it roomy — smaller than expected, about seven tables, never wide but always full. There is, though, a place to sit alone: five posts describe a counter along the window or one wall, next to the two- and four-tops, and treat it as the reason a solo diner is comfortable here. One writer counts the seats: a counter, one six-top, two four-tops and three two-tops. Another notes the tables are not jammed against each other.
  6. The origin board says everything but the flour and the noodles is Korean. Four writers read it and copy it down, one adding that the kimchi is on the list too; two say it is why they trust the place. Nobody writes that the kimchi is made here — only that it is Korean.
  7. There is instant coffee beside the water cooler, free. Two writers mention it and one guesses it is there for the taxi drivers. Three describe this stretch of road as a row of drivers' canteens, and one who came in the small hours found the room full of them. Water is self-service — five posts say so.
  8. Somebody is paying attention. Three writers say so: one arrived in white and was handed an apron, one was told by the owner to try the soy-and-onion sauce in the broth, one simply found the owner kind. Nobody reports being badly served. On a weekday afternoon, one writer watched a single woman work the till, the kitchen and the tables at once.
  9. It comes out fast. One writer says so, in the same breath as noting who eats here — drivers and office workers on a clock. Nobody reports waiting for food. It is one person's observation. The same writer notes that when you order both, the gimbap arrives first.
  10. You can see into the kitchen. Two writers mention it — one watches the gimbap being rolled, the other takes the open view as a sign the cooking is clean. Two comment on the tables, one of them insisting there was not a trace of stickiness. One says the interior was redone at some point along the way, without saying when.

Parking

2 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park2 of 13 posts

Read the parking claims carefully. Four posts carry a line about it in their information blocks, and they contradict each other — two say parking is available, one says available along with takeaway, one says flatly that it is not. All four read as copied from the shop's online listing, and none of those four writers says they parked, so we have not counted them. One person did park, in front of the shop, and still advised readers to come by train. One other counted the space: about three cars in front, with the kerb used late at night. On a road this size, nobody else mentions a car at all.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Nobody writes about a step at the door, stairs, or getting in with a wheelchair. Several place the shop on a main road, and that is as far as it goes; none of the thirteen looked at the threshold or the door. Nor does anyone say whether a pushchair or a wheelchair gets in, or whether there is a high chair or a changing table. Three saying the room is small, and one saying the tables are not crammed, is everything we have.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Why thirteen and not twenty-one. Of the twenty-one posts the name pulled in, seven were advertisements for a different noodle shop — one a few streets away that had planted our name in its titles, text and hashtags as a search term. Five of those seven open by declaring they were paid to write, and they are built on the same template; two dishes from that shop's menu had come across with them. An eighth was a visit to yet another noodle place near the university's back gate. The thirteen that remain all carry the check-in for this address, all describe eating here, and all thirteen are different people. One of the thirteen declares that the meal was provided.
  • Open until four in the morning, closed on Sundays. Ten posts give hours; nine of them say ten in the morning to four the next, and all ten say Sundays are off. One disagrees: a writer from October 2024 records ten to four in the *afternoon*, and repeats at the end that the short day means going at lunchtime. Posts on either side all say four in the morning, so it looks like a misreading — we have left it in rather than corrected it. Two give times without days, and one writes 'every day' while noting in the same post that Sunday is closed. Not one of the thirteen gives a break time or a last order. One states outright that the hours came from the shop's Naver listing rather than the door.
  • Nobody has used the toilet. One post out of thirteen brings it up, and that writer says plainly that they never went in — only that they were told it is on the ground floor of the building next door. That is hearsay, not observation, so we have not counted it. Whether it is inside or out, shared or separate, clean or not, nobody writes.
  • Nobody says what floor the shop is on, or whether you climb to it. The word for 'floor' appears once in all thirteen posts, and not about this shop: a writer passes on what they were told about the toilet, that it is on the ground floor of the lodging house next door. No stairs, no lift; the two posts that mention anything underground mean the subway. Several say the shop is on a big road, but that is a fact about the street, not the building, and the building name in the address carries no floor with it. Whether you step straight in off the pavement or go up, we do not know.
  • Nobody says they queued, but several say it gets busy. One advises going slightly off the lunch hour; one arrived at lunch to find people streaming in; one says the small room is always full; one came at two in the morning and still found it busy. None of the thirteen reports actually waiting, so we have not counted a queue — and nobody reports being turned away either.
  • One post declares that the meal was provided — a December 2024 entry that says so in its first line while insisting the review is its own. We have kept it in the count: unlike the advertisements we removed, it records what was ordered and what it cost, which bus the writer took, and who came along. Two others state that they paid. The remaining ten say nothing either way. There is no bulk-posted cluster here: the thirteen are spread across two years, and of the two dates carrying more than one post, the later pair were among the advertisements we already removed.
