Wookine

우기네 An evening-only raw-beef drinking house by Ulsan's Taehwagang garden, where the free beef broth gets written about as much as the beef

Data as of · Published ·

Wookine is a raw-beef drinking house on the main road by Ulsan's Taehwagang National Garden. It has traded from the same spot since 2017 and does not open in daytime: ten past five in the evening until one in the morning. A dim room with counter seats and tables, and a room at the back that can be shut. What it sells is four or five preparations of raw beef, plus the things that go with them — a beef ramyeon, a thick crab-and-egg soup, an egg rice bowl, chewy cold noodles, fritters. Sit down and a bowl of beef-and-radish broth arrives free, with roasted sunflower seeds and shell-shaped crackers. It has a reputation for highballs, and one woman trims the beef and talks to the customers. You can come here first in an evening or second — eight of the twenty-three arrived having already eaten elsewhere. The posts we read run from October 2024 to August 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. The story starts with what arrives before you order. A beef-and-radish broth, roasted sunflower seeds, shell-shaped crackers — eleven posts mention them. Of the broth: deep, dark, savoury, gone in one go, and one writer reckons it alone would see off a bottle of soju. Another had it refilled twice. One insists the sunflower seeds are as well made as the beef. And then there is what the owner adds: six writers record a fried egg, strawberries, salami, chips, a beer or a taster of sliced beef sent over free. One offered to pay for the chips and was refused.
  2. It is built so that you can come alone. Nine posts describe both counter seats and tables; the counter, they say, takes two or three comfortably and suits solo drinking, and there is a single portion of raw beef on the board for exactly that. One writer saw someone drinking alone. At the other end there is a room set back, where four sit and a second table can be pushed alongside — seven posts mention it, one noting that the place takes group bookings and that a friend of theirs held a wedding after-party here; another says the hidden space next door hosts exhibitions and collaborations with other shops. Heavy coats go on hooks behind the counter; the disposable aprons are self-service.
  3. An unusual number of these are regulars. Twelve of the twenty-three say they had been before: "the shop I keep going back to"; "I've come here since my mid-twenties"; "first time since university"; and one who put off writing for a year because there were too many photographs to sort. One blogger came in April and again in September 2025, ordering the sliced raw beef both times. One calls it full of memories with her husband and her own first date spot — and discovered over dinner that her friend had a first date here too. Two say they come back for the conversation with the owner.

Parking

7 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot7 of 22 posts

There is no car park. Seven posts say so plainly, two of them pointing you to a public one instead. Only one names it: the lot down by the Taehwa river, with the suggestion that you eat, then walk back to the car along the water. It is a drinking house, so leaving the car at home is the point — one writer regrets driving and spending the evening on cola.

Getting inside

Toilet inside2 of 22 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 22 posts

No post says what floor it is on. Nobody mentions a basement or an upstairs, and nobody mentions stairs. The licence records the ground floor, but that is a document, not something we read in these posts, so it is not counted here. The seven writers who describe the back room call it a private space and nothing more — whether it is on the same level, none of them says.

Not one post touches on thresholds, ramps, or getting in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across all twenty-three, none of those words appears, nor "steps". We know it is on a main road, that one writer says the toilet is inside and used one person at a time, and that two describe the frontage as plain. Whether there is a step at the door we could not establish.

Two writers looked at the toilet and both were generous about it. One is relieved it is inside rather than out the back — one person at a time, with hair ties and mouthwash set out. The other found separate men's and women's, clean, and the corridor to it decorated. A third, relaying a friend, notes that sanitary products are stocked, which they had never seen in a drinking house. But that is three — the other twenty posts never mention it. "One at a time" and "separate men's and women's" do not quite square, and which is right we could not settle.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 24 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The closing day does not agree from post to post, and some nights it shuts without warning. Six give Sunday as the weekly closing day; one, from October 2025, gives Wednesday. Posts either side of it say Sunday, so it reads like one writer's slip — but it is not ours to correct, so both are here. Opening time is 17:10 in six posts and 17:30 in one; six people writing the same ten-minute mark makes 17:10 the likely one. And one post supplies the thing that matters: sudden closures and early finishes go up on Instagram (@wookineyo). Another booked a table by Instagram message. On holidays, one writer says only to check first. For a place that opens only in the evening, a look at the feed before you set off is worth it.
  • Not one post describes queuing. Only two say anything about how busy it gets: one guesses, from what they saw, that this is a place where people smoke outside and wait — they did not wait themselves — and the other, on a weekday early evening, counted a couple of occupied tables and a few people collecting takeaway. It opens only in the evening and many arrive as a second stop, yet nobody records a wait — not even those writing about arriving after ten, or after midnight. When it fills up, we do not know.
  • Nobody writes about getting here by bus or train. Across twenty-three posts there is no route, no stop, no walking time. The directions are all by neighbour: next to the McDonald's, they say — except the McDonald's has gone and become another burger place; near the supermarket and the Lotteria; off the main road from the national garden; just there on the roadside on the way to the hospital. One writer took a taxi and the driver knew it. Most arrive on foot or by cab, being that it is a drinking house, and still nobody wrote the way down. Not an absence of buses but an absence of writers.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship. We read the bodies and the hashtags to the end and found no "provided for review" line. Two writers state they paid. One post, though, has to be weighed apart: its author says outright that a senior colleague paid — and that the owner is his old university junior. The owner closed the menu and simply brought food out, two plates of the half-and-half among it; the writer suspects the portions were larger than usual; and the evening ended with the shop shutting early so they could carry on in the beer place next door. What that post says about the prices being fair for a raw-beef house, and about the size of the plates, cannot carry the same weight as the other twenty-two. Six of those twenty-two also got something free from the owner, but that is six separate evenings, which is a different thing. And twenty-three posts are not twenty-three people — one blog wrote twice.
  • Two posts checked in here and then said nothing at all about the place, and those two are out of the count. One follows its check-in with a smoothie made at home; the other with four hours of conversation with a friend, and not a word about the room or the food. They were here — there is simply nothing to count. We did not delete them, since they are real records of a visit, and a person may want to see them later. In the other direction we did count two very thin ones: a golf write-up that ends with a single line about the beef being the most memorable part of the day, and a diary that records a bowl of fried rice and a stranger telling the table to keep the noise down. A record of a meal counts, however short.
