Lay-Back Coffee Stand

레이백 커피 스탠드 Reibaek Keopi Seutaendeu Cafe across from Taehwagang National Garden in Ulsan: dogs inside and out, terrace seats, open till eleven

Data as of · Published ·

Lay-Back Coffee Stand sits on the ground floor of a converted white-brick house across the road from the main plaza of Taehwagang National Garden. It is registered as "Layback Coffee", but the sign and everyone who writes about it use the longer name. Coffee runs ₩4,800–6,500 and dessert ₩5,500–9,000, and more writers single out the dessert than the coffee — the french toast above all. It is open until eleven every night, last orders at ten fifty; three writers came precisely because nowhere else was still open. Dogs are allowed inside as well as out, which seventeen of the posts mention. We read 28 posts, from January to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. For most of these writers the dog is the reason. Seventeen mention bringing one, and three note that inside counts as well as outside — the happiest line in the set comes from an owner on that point. One reckons more than half the customers that day had a dog; another had one at the very next table. Three describe the water bowls on the self-serve counter, hand-drawn with dogs. One copies out the notice at the door: vaccinations done, carrier, bag, pushchair or lead, no barking indoors, and the dog stays at your table. But one writer records no weight limit and another was told a lead alone was fine, so the practice looks gentler than the notice — though we could not confirm that. One puts it plainly: this is not a dog café, so your dog will be doing a lot of staying put.
  2. There are tables outside, and twenty of the twenty-eight write about them. Beige camp chairs and wooden tables; one writer counts three or four. They go quickly — the front one was taken before one writer arrived; another found the terrace easy at six on a Saturday and full an hour later; a third moved out the moment a seat freed up. Three describe shifting between inside and out during a single visit. It is a seasonal thing: an August writer gave up and went in for the air conditioning, a February one was too cold, and on a wet March day it was not an option at all. In early April the cherry trees in front come out — four posts are about that.
  3. People come here to stay a while. Five writers praise the seating, one of them after three or four hours of talking with friends in it. Others note that the wall seats are all sofas, that the chairs have backs, and that the room is big enough not to worry about finding a place. Five say the music sits under conversation rather than over it. One writer says the opposite: the tables are close enough that she would not choose it for a serious talk. Since the same post also calls the room roomy, the picture is a large space with tables near each other.
  4. The posts do not agree about the coffee. Eleven had an americano — more than anything else — and the verdicts split: a clean finish and no sourness on one side; on the other, a writer who visits two or three cafés a week found it thin and says she will order something else next time, and a neighbourhood regular who has never once thought it good. Both call it personal taste. The desserts and teas draw no such split: ten posts mention the french toast, nine the basque cheesecake, and two single out the TWG-based rooibos and milk tea. One writer puts it directly — the coffee is fine, but it is the desserts this place is known for.
  5. There is a photo booth outside. Two writers mention it, and one records that she walked in assuming it was free and it cost ₩5,000 — adding that it is too cramped for more than two people. Inside, four writers describe the records and turntable, the shop's own merchandise, and an Einstein figurine. One points out the mirror overhead, which is where the photographs get taken.

The most ordered dish is americano (아메리카노) — 11 of 27 posts.

Parking

2 posts say you can park; 5 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park2 of 27 posts
Posts saying you cannot5 of 27 posts

There is no car park of its own, and this is the sticking point if you drive. Of the seven writers who describe parking, five describe failing: one calls a weekend here a war of people and cars; one found the nearby public lots effectively full in cherry-blossom season, with a long queue, and walked from a farther one; one simply parks across the river in Nam-gu and walks over the Simnidaebat bridge every time; two others note there is no lot attached and you pay to park somewhere else. The two who managed it hedge as well — plenty of spaces but plenty of cars, find one or two if you look. Two posts quote the garden car park's tariff in full, but that is copied from the Naver listing and we left it out of the count.

Getting there

Getting inside

Step at the entrance1 of 27 posts
Step-free access1 of 27 posts
Toilet inside3 of 27 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 27 posts

There is only the ground floor. The address reads "221 Taehwagang-gukgajeongwon-gil, building 1, 1F", and more than twenty posts copy it; one states the ground floor separately. Not one of the 28 mentions a stair or a lift. One describes a converted white-brick house, and several read as though the writer opened the door straight off the street. That there is no upstairs is certain; whether the doorway itself is flat or stepped, nobody says.

No post says whether a wheelchair can get in. Two come close and neither settles it. The first: a mother took a pushchair to the outdoor seats when her baby was a little over a hundred days old, and thinks a pushchair is fine in good weather — that is outside, not in. The second: one writer warns you to watch your step on the way to the toilet, because the threshold there is sloped and easy to catch. The pushchairs in the dog notice are for carrying dogs. Nobody measured the door, the threshold, or the room between tables.

The toilet is inside — three writers used it and said so, one of them adding only that it was clean. One records from her own eyes that it is split into men's and women's, and tidy. Several other posts carry the same detail, but inside a copied Naver facility list (groups welcome, takeaway, wi-fi, separate toilets, dogs allowed), so we did not count those. One writer warns of a sloped threshold on the way to it — her words, left as a warning.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Exactly one writer arrived by bus — she walked from her hotel's stop, past the sign for the national garden and a little way on. She does not say which bus or which stop. The other twenty-seven either drove or say nothing about getting there. On the location itself the posts agree: directly opposite the garden's main plaza, right by the small roundabout, impossible to miss if you walk that stretch. What the journey is like without a car, we do not know.
  • One writer queued. On a cherry-blossom weekend in early April she records a little waiting at weekends, and says it thins out after five — she got a two-top when one came free. Two others walked straight in, and both had picked their moment: one came in the evening, one came early. The remaining twenty-five say nothing about waiting at all. Several do say it is busy, though — really busy, always busy, too busy to photograph the room during blossom season. A full room and a queue are not the same thing, and only the first is something we know. Drinks come quickly; one writer records fifteen minutes for the french toast.
  • The posts contradict each other on closing days. One says the place never closes, another says there is no closing day — and one August 2026 post says it shuts every Monday. The same information block in that post also gives the hours as 11:00–22:50 with last orders at 22:50, repeating one number for both, while the other twenty-four all say 11:00–23:00. A further post says only that the closing day varies. If you are going on a Monday, phone first. On last orders all seventeen posts that mention it agree: ten fifty.
  • Two things got dearer. On a January 2026 photograph of the board the chocolate and matcha terrines are ₩5,500; from July they are both ₩6,300. The same July board carries two items the January one does not: an almond ice cream at ₩6,500 and a matcha basque cheesecake at ₩7,500. Nothing else moved — the americano is ₩4,800 in February, April, July and September alike, and the einspanner and the french toast held at ₩5,700 and ₩9,000 through the year. Two posts disagree with the board: a July one prices the ice cream coffee at ₩5,500 and the chamomile at ₩6,000 against ₩6,300 and ₩6,500 on the same month's photographs, and a September one puts the matcha cream latte at ₩6,400 against ₩6,300. We have no way to settle it, so both figures are recorded.
  • Not one of the 28 declares a sponsorship. Eleven volunteer that they paid their own way; seventeen say nothing. No blog appears twice, so 28 posts are 28 people. One is a week's diary covering eight places, and only its Lay-Back passage is counted — that writer records it as her third visit. One post, from February 2026, states plainly that there are no high chairs. One notes you can pay with the Ulsan local card. A writer who came on 12 March 2026 found the Christmas decorations still up, and guessed they would be gone by spring.
