Korean

Songgane Gamjatang

송가네감자탕 Songgane means 'the Song family's place' (Song-ga, the Song family, plus -ne, 'folks'); gamjatang is a pork-backbone stew with potatoes.

A gamjatang-and-bossam house at 245 Donggyo-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, at the end of the old taxi-drivers' restaurant row by the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. The most-ordered thing was the janchisang set — gamjatang, bossam and stir-fried octopus or pork on one table, KRW 42,000 for two — in 8 visits; 9 visits ordered the stew on its own (small KRW 31,000). People eating alone had the backbone soup (11,000) or the bossam meal (12,000). Several writers say it has been running since 1988; today it fills a building from the basement to the second floor and stays open almost all night. We read 30 posts from 3 Aug to 7 Oct 2026; 24 of them describe an actual meal. Of those 24, three disclose sponsorship and four say the writer paid.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. There is a self-serve corner: 12 posts say they topped up lettuce, kimchi, side dishes or rice themselves ('refill without feeling awkward', 'the greens were fresh so I kept going back'). Nearly every post singles out the kimchi.
  2. Eleven posts say the portions are large — the two-person set was 'like three portions', and even the small stew had plenty of bone. One writer said the stew was not especially generous.
  3. Four posts say food came fast — bossam and backbone soup 'less than a minute after ordering', the whole set 'within 15 minutes, all at once'. Nobody complained of slow service.
  4. Five posts ordered on a tablet at the table. Two mention a foreign-language menu, and three saw foreign customers.
3 more
  1. Seven posts say it is walkable from the subway: five give 5–6 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station exit 3, one 403 m, one 10 minutes. It is also two minutes from the Gyeongui Line park.
  2. Of the 8 posts calling something spicy, most mean the sweet-hot sauce on the octopus or pork; two say the stew broth has a kick. One found the backbone soup not spicy at all. A raw chili on the side dish was not counted.
  3. Five posts went with friends, two with family (parents, a sibling), one with a husband and one alone; several noticed many solo diners.

Parking

Posts saying you can park1 of 23 posts

Only one writer actually parked: about four spaces beside the building, first come first served, for the length of the meal. One post called parking 'really, really hard' and another said the lot is tight and suggested transit. 'Free parking' and '10–14 spaces' in other posts are copied listings we did not count.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

Seven posts say it is walkable from the subway: five give 5–6 minutes from Hongik Univ. Station exit 3, one 403 m, one 10 minutes. It is also two minutes from the Gyeongui Line park.

Getting inside

Second floor11 of 23 posts
In a basement7 of 23 posts

Seating is not just the ground floor: 7 posts sat in or mention a basement room, 11 mention a second floor. When the ground floor is busy, staff send people up or down — 'there were quite a few people on the first floor so we were shown to the second', 'we were taken down to the basement'. One writer noticed goldfish and ginseng liquor on the stairs down.

No post says whether there is a step at the door, whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in, or whether there is a lift — nobody wrote about it, which is not the same as no. One post mentions taking stairs down to the basement room.

No one described the toilets. 'Separate men's and women's restrooms' appears only in copied amenity lists in two posts.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-052 posts in one day
2026-09-252 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Waiting barely comes up. One writer walked straight in early in the day; another heard there is a list at busy times and your turn is skipped if you are not there when called, but never waited in two or three visits. Posts mention crowds at mealtimes, but nobody gave a wait time.
  • This building is not the original site. A 20-year regular wrote that it 'moved, so it's bright and clean', another that it is 'much bigger than before', a third missed the feel it had 'before the remodel'. No post says when it moved; everything we read describes the current building. A 10 Aug post was sent to the basement because the ground floor was 'under renovation', yet someone ate on the ground floor the next day, so we do not know how much was closed.
  • Seasoning splits one to one: a family found the stew broth a bit salty, another writer said the octopus was not salty at all.
  • Opening hours appear in 15 visit posts, all copied from the shop's listing. Nine give Sun/Mon/Wed/Thu 8:30 am to 6 am, Tuesday until 11 pm, and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. Three give Sun–Thu 8:30–6:00 with no Tuesday exception, two say 8:30–6:00 every day, one says '24 hours, no days off'. Check before a late Tuesday visit. One regular says the hours changed at some point but not how.
  • Prices are from Aug–Oct 2026 posts: small stew KRW 31,000 (three visit posts), medium 38,000 (one), janchisang for two 42,000 (six), backbone soup 11,000 (four), bossam meal 12,000 (three). Rice is 1,000 extra with the stew and the set. Five posts call it good value; none say expensive. One pair paid 69,000 for the set plus cold noodles and pot rice.
  • Many posts list the phone number 0507-1379-6557. Reservations, groups and private hire appear only in copied listings; no one wrote that they booked. One post suggests calling ahead about parking.
  • Three posts disclose sponsorship. Five posts from 10–19 Aug (two of them sponsored) carry the same hashtag block and the shop's Instagram link, and the same lines recur across posts: bones soaked long to remove blood, a house 'special sauce', '5–6 minutes from exit 3, 2 minutes from the park'. Kimchi 'made fresh daily', celebrity visits and TV appearances are the shop's own claims or hearsay, and we did not count them.
