Dongchool Oden is an oden bar two or three minutes' walk from exit 6 of Sindang station, one turn off the main road into a side street. It opens at five in the evening and runs to two in the morning, closing at midnight only on Sundays — there is no daytime service at all. A yellow ODEN sign outside; inside, exposed concrete and wood, eight counter seats and three tables of four, and that is the whole room. The name, the shop explains, means setting out fishing together. Two dishes carry the place: the oden hot pot, whose six fishcakes you choose yourself, and odori-tang, spicy braised chicken with fishcake skewers dropped in, added to the menu in January 2026. The posts we read run from October 2025 to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- Prices went up once, in the summer of 2026. Almost every line differs between the posts written up to June and those from July on: the hot pot ₩16,000→18,000, the chicken pot ₩30,000→32,000, skewers ₩13,000→14,000, the karaage and the fried-tofu kimchi ₩14,000→16,000, the noodle pasta ₩9,000→10,000, the draught and the sours ₩7,500→8,500, a single fishcake ₩3,000→3,500, a side ₩1,500→2,000. Only soju and bottled beer held at ₩5,000. Of the thirteen posts that give prices, not one calls the place expensive and eight call it good value — but seven of those eight were written before the rise. Nobody has checked these figures since.
- People do not agree about the heat. The chicken pot comes at three levels, each named after a Korean instant noodle. Of twelve posts, eight found it hot and four did not — and the disagreement is at the bottom level: three self-described lightweights say the base heat was exactly right, while two others ordered the mildest and still called it hot. Of four who took level one, two sweated through it and two were fine. Nobody in thirty posts ordered level two. Two writers were also caught out by the whelk noodles, and two more by the spicy-japchae fishcake.
- One drink per person is the rule — two posts say so. But the highballs and sours can be made with soda and no alcohol, which two writers say let them sit out an evening they could not drink, and a third say let them drive home. The alcohol-free version costs the same: ₩7,500, ₩8,500 from July 2026.
- Write a review and you get a scoop of the house sherbet. Eleven posts mention it, and of the eight people who ate it, exactly one paid. Five more note that tagging the shop in an Instagram story gets you a Polaroid. Worth knowing when you read this shop's reviews anywhere: that is how they accumulate. No post in the thirty declares a sponsorship, though one writer mentions that her first visit, the year before, was on a tasting-group invitation. One post states outright that the writer paid.
- The all-you-can-drink tokkuri promotion keeps coming back. For the second anniversary in May 2026 it was ₩8,900 for up to four people for ninety minutes (one post); later it ran as a weekday happy hour, five to seven, at ₩7,900 a head (one post). It is advertised on a board outside, and two writers went in because they saw it. One notes ten per cent off the sake of the month by the bottle. Whether it comes round on a schedule, we do not know — one writer wonders aloud whether she has to wait until next May.
- The kitchen is open and the counter runs along it. Six writers spent the wait watching the cooking. The owners' instructions turn up again and again: let the chicken pot reduce another five minutes (two posts), wait for the hot pot to come to the boil (one), put the noodles in early rather than late (one). One writer asked about the broth and was told it is made in house. Eight posts call the service kind; not one has a complaint.
- The toilets are outside the room. Six posts say so and none says otherwise. They are separate for men and women (six posts), and the women's is unlocked with a key on an elephant fob while the men's takes a code (two posts). One writer, who says she normally avoids an outdoor toilet, went and was won over; eight posts in all call the toilets or the room clean, and none calls them dirty. Several list mouthwash, floss and air freshener — but that list appears word for word in the shop's own published blurb, so some of those mentions are copied rather than seen.
- Some call it roomy and some call it small, and they are saying the same thing. Four say the room is not big and three say it is — but both sides land on a small room with wide gaps between the tables: cosy but unexpectedly comfortable for its size, says one; compact but the spacing is generous, says another. There are eight counter seats and three tables of four, so parties have to ring ahead. Five posts call it quiet and none calls it loud — one writer picked it precisely because she could hear her friend. Two found every table taken at nine on a weekday.

No post describes the entrance. Whether there is a step, how wide the door is, whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets through — none of the thirty says. Several do say the toilet is outside the room and opens with a key or a code, but nobody says whether the way to it is level. This is not a yes or a no; it is that nobody looked.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Seventeen posts say this is a good place to drink alone. Not one of the thirty writers came alone. Every one of them is looking at the counter and guessing. One did report seeing solo drinkers at the bar. Nobody has sat there by themselves and written about it, so whether it is comfortable alone, we cannot tell you.
- No post says what floor it is on. The licence puts it in unit 101 on the ground floor, but none of the thirty writers mentions a floor or a stair. Two warn you may miss the turn the first time; two say the yellow sign is bright enough to settle it once you are close.
- Exactly one writer says she waited. In July 2026 she describes tables refilling the moment they emptied, with a short queue at one point. The rest go only as far as a full room: every table taken at nine on a weekday (one), busy at ten to nine (one), people coming in throughout the meal (one). They take bookings — one to eight people through Naver, larger parties by phone. But of the seven posts that mention booking, only two actually booked; the rest are repeating the notice. The shop asks a ₩50,000 deposit for four or more on Friday and Saturday. How long a wait gets, nobody has yet written down.
- One of the thirty posts we found is not an account of a visit, and we have taken it out of the count. Written in June 2026, it reproduces the shop's own Naver listing twice, in full, quotes other people's reviews inside quotation marks, and never says what was ordered or what it cost. A June post calls it a cool autumn afternoon; a shop that opens at five in the evening is described as quiet at weekday lunchtime; Sindang-dong is placed in a different district of Seoul. At the bottom, the writer states that the information was compiled from the public Naver listing. So the numbers on this page are out of twenty-nine, not thirty.
