Korean

Goryeo Samgyetang

고려삼계탕 Goryeo is the medieval Korean kingdom whose name gave us the word Korea; samgyetang is a small whole chicken stuffed with sticky rice and simmered with ginseng.

A samgyetang house on a side street beside the Seoul Museum of Art in Jung-gu. The plain chicken-ginseng soup is 20,000 won; there are wild-ginseng and abalone versions and a whole chicken fried without batter. The soup arrives boiling in an earthenware pot with kimchi, radish kimchi and a glass of ginseng liquor. We read 19 posts from 30 January to 20 October 2026; 9 are first-hand visits, the other 10 are multi-restaurant lists and one post about a different shop.

Rows without a count: 4 of 5 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Food comes fast. Four posts say the soup arrived almost as soon as they ordered, one likening it to fast food. Nobody complained of a slow kitchen.
  2. Many foreign visitors. Four posts noticed them; a January 2026 writer thought tourists roughly outnumbered Koreans, and a June writer still saw them late in the evening.
  3. Waiting depends on the hour: two posts waited or saw a line, two walked straight in. A July writer saw a long lunchtime line, came back around 2 pm and found none. An August writer got in without waiting at about 12:40, and a June couple arriving at the 10:30 opening found one party ahead. The January wait of two or three groups was during renovation, when only the second floor was open.
  4. Four posts found it filling — the chicken is small but the sticky-rice stuffing is generous. One writer had enough, but her companion found it too little.
2 more
  1. Five visit posts all give 20,000 won for the plain soup. One found that steep for a single bowl; the writer who had the 32,000-won wild-ginseng-and-abalone version called it not a light price.
  2. Four of the nine visit posts were couples. One writer ate alone at a window seat; one came with a work team on the last dog day of summer.

Two posts parked nearby: one used the lot run by neighbouring Paichai High School, where the restaurant covers the first hour; the other named the Paichai Jeongdong Building car park. No one mentioned a lot of the restaurant's own.

Getting inside

Second floor1 of 9 posts

We don't know which floor you will be seated on. One post mentions only the second floor being open during renovation, another a staircase beside the entrance; no one says how the floors are used now.

No one says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or pushchair can get in. That is a gap in what was written, not evidence either way.

No post says where the toilet is or whether it is separated by sex.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

How to read these posts

  • Posts saying they paid themselves9 of 9 posts

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 18 posts we gathered, 9 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Accounts of the room differ by date. A January 2026 writer went during renovation, when only the second floor was open, and found tables crammed and noisy — adding that the work has since finished. Two posts from June and July call the room spacious and pleasant.
  • Five posts list opening hours; four agree on 10:30-21:00 weekdays and 10:30-20:30 weekends, all copied from listings, and one says 10:30-21:00 daily. One couple did walk in at the 10:30 opening. No visit post confirms closing days or a break time.
  • Two posts give the phone number 02-752-9376. One copied a note that Naver booking is available, but no one actually reserved before going.
  • The Michelin listings, the 1960 founding as 'Korea's first samgyetang restaurant' and the seven-week-old cockerels are the house's own claims or copied from lists; we did not count them.
