Simmani Yakcho Baeksuk

심마니약초백숙 A simmani is a forager who roams the mountains for wild ginseng and herbs; yakcho baeksuk is a whole chicken or duck simmered with medicinal herbs — the posts say the owners forage the herbs and mushrooms themselves.

Simmani Yakcho Baeksuk (registered as Sanyakcho Baeksuk) sits in an alley behind Ttukdo Market in Seongsu-dong, at Seongdeokjeong 13-gil 4, and serves chicken and duck simmered with wild herbs and mushrooms. You book by phone, fixing the party size, time and dish in advance, and arrive to find the side dishes and the pot already laid out. Posts list the herbal chicken at 90,000 won, the duck at 100,000 won (one says 95,000) and braised chicken with aged kimchi at 70,000 won; once the meat is gone, porridge is cooked in the leftover broth. It is a shared-pot place: five posts went as a group and four with friends. We read 28 posts dated 17 April to 4 October 2026; five were about other restaurants and were set aside, and 19 describe an actual visit.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You book ahead. Thirteen posts say they reserved. Several say you must tell the owner the party size, time and dish over the phone (02-466-9368); how far ahead people booked varies from a month to twelve days, two weeks or three days. One called on a Tuesday and got that Saturday. Two posts say a confirmation call or text came on the day, one around 9 a.m., and one was told no-shows are remembered and refused next time. One post says there was no queue because everyone has a booking.
  2. The owner carves at your table. Nine posts say that once the pot boils the owner (one post says a staff member) comes over, takes the meat off the bone, cuts the mushrooms and fills your plate; one describes the owner pulling up a wheeled stool to do it. The order of eating is explained too: several posts describe wrapping the meat in lettuce with pickled radish, chili and house ssamjang, and one says they were told five times. One post warns that the explanations are long and lively, so shy diners should be ready.
  3. Drinks come free when you sit down. Seven posts say so. Three were given water boiled with Chinese bush clover, cassia seed, burdock and mulberry leaf; the rest mention a glass of the owner's infused liquor, most often sorghum liquor with mock strawberries, sometimes black raspberry or mulberry. One post warns it is over 40 percent, and another suggests leaving the car at home for that reason.
  4. Every side dish is refilled except the jelly and the seasoned chilies. All five posts that discuss refills say those two are not refilled, and two of them say they got seconds of everything else. One was told the jelly is made in small batches just to serve a special soy sauce.
4 more
  1. Leftovers go home with you. Six posts say they took the remaining broth, porridge or side dishes, or were handed plastic bags for the side dishes. One says the pot was scraped clean into the container and the family ate it again that evening.
  2. Seven posts say the portions are large. One calls it a bit much for two, and another says to come with at least three. One post differs, saying the meat alone can look modest but the porridge fills you up.
  3. Seating is on the floor. Three posts say so and two mention taking shoes off. Two describe the room as small, about ten tables; one counts five tables in the main room and two in a back room. Three posts say meals are limited to two hours. One summer post says the room was cool enough to eat without sweating.
  4. It is a walk from Seongsu Station. Five posts describe the walk: ten minutes from exit 3 in three posts, fifteen in two. One got lost for more than ten minutes in the alleys behind the market.

Parking

3 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot3 of 17 posts

Do not count on parking. Of six posts that mention it, three say there is no lot and you should use a public car park nearby, and one only recommends the public lot. The phrase 'parking available' appears only in two copied info boxes, which we did not count.

Where it is

Map showing where Simmani Yakcho Baeksuk is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

It is a walk from Seongsu Station. Five posts describe the walk: ten minutes from exit 3 in three posts, fifteen in two. One got lost for more than ten minutes in the alleys behind the market.

Getting inside

Toilet inside1 of 17 posts

We do not know the floor. No post describes going up or down stairs; the '1st floor' in the address is the registered listing, not something a visitor reported.

No post says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in — that means unknown, not absent. Two posts note that you take your shoes off and sit on the floor.

Only two posts mention the toilet. One says it is inside but admits not using it; the other says it is a squat toilet. No one says whether it is split by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 21 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Ten visit posts give hours: nine say 10:00 to 22:00, one says 10:00 to 20:00. Seven say it closes on the first and third Monday of each month. Most of these are copied from info boxes, and no post mentions a break time or last order.
  • On price: six posts put the duck at 100,000 won and one, dated 29 August 2026, at 95,000. They are from the same months, so we cannot tell a price change from a typo. Five posts discuss value: three say it is worth it, two only say it seemed steep at first. Several groups of three or four shared one bird, which works out to about 30,000 won a head, but that is our arithmetic, not theirs.
  • Four posts were told to avoid dairy after the meal, but the window varies: two hours in two posts, three hours in one, the rest of the day in one. Most posts list three dishes, but one from April 2026 lists five, adding samgyetang and lacquer-tree chicken. Nearly every post repeats that chefs Anh Sung-jae and 'Cooking Monster' Lee Ha-seong have eaten here and that the owners forage the herbs themselves; those come from YouTube and the restaurant, so we did not count them.
