올음 Oreum Oleum is the owner's contraction of 올바른 음식, 'proper food', as several visitors were told.

Compiled from 25 blog posts read in fullSources →

Oleum is a sashimi omakase counter in an alley between Seongsu and Konkuk Univ. stations, half a flight down in the basement of a red-brick building. A single owner-chef works an open kitchen in front of the bar, sending out 10 to 12 plates — steamed egg, octopus in vinegar dressing, abalone steamed in rice wine, two rounds of aged sashimi, grilled fish, a shellfish plate, a seaweed hand roll, udon, pot rice and house-made sweets — for 70,000 won a head, a price that held across every post we read. Two diners must order at least one bottle of traditional Korean liquor, and it opens only for dinner (17:00 on weekdays, 15:00 at weekends, closed Mondays). We read 30 posts from 20 March to 1 August 2026; 4 were about other places, leaving 26 first-hand visits.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Drinking is part of the deal: 14 posts say two diners must order at least one bottle. Prices seen on the list were 34,000 won for Samyangchun cheongju, 36,000 won for Suam, 14,000 won for a Korean IPA, and 45,000 won per person for a four-glass pairing. Two posts ordered non-alcoholic beer, and many say the chef will pick a bottle — including ones not on the list — if you describe what you like.
  2. Fifteen posts describe the seating: mostly a counter facing the chef, with ten mentioning a separate table. One counts a U-shaped counter for up to 10 plus a four-top by the window that takes parties of two or more; others say about 8 counter seats and a single four-person table.
  3. Nine posts mention the open kitchen: from the counter you watch the chef break down fish, slice the octopus in front of you, and cook the soups, steamed and grilled dishes.
  4. Ten posts call it good value for the money — one asks whether 70,000 won for that spread can be real. None call it expensive.
4 more
  1. Fourteen posts call it quiet — tucked into a residential lane away from Seongsu's busy streets, calmest on weekday evenings — though one found it nearly full of reservations even on a weekday night.
  2. Seventeen posts booked ahead, through CatchTable or Naver. Two note that seatings are staggered every 30 minutes, so each party starts at its own time.
  3. One post says the meal slowed down: with the chef alone doing everything and new parties arriving every 30 minutes, gaps opened between plates — in at 17:50, out at 20:30. Another post found the same staggered system relaxed and unhurried.
  4. Company varies: three posts went as a couple, two with friends, one with a mother, one with two former bosses, and one diner sat alone at the counter and found it not awkward at all.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 8 · no 2 (of 25 posts read)
Toilet inside10 of 25 posts

Eight posts describe going down to a basement and two call it ground floor. Those who went down describe it as "about half a flight", a semi-basement, "basement but feels like ground level" — so it sits half a storey below the street rather than deep underground. Two posts note a large window that lets light in. The building's first and second floors are a different restaurant.

No one mentions an entrance step, wheelchair or stroller access, or a lift — that means we don't know, not that there is none. Two posts mention stairs down at the entrance.

Ten posts say the toilet is inside the restaurant, so there is no trip to a shared building toilet; some list mouthwash, eye drops, hair ties, contact-lens solution, cotton swabs and even an eyelash curler laid out.

No one says whether the toilets are separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Eight posts say it is walkable from the subway, and one says it is a bit of a trek. Walking times disagree: two posts give 5 minutes from Seongsu exit 3 and 7 from Konkuk Univ. exit 6, while six say 10 to 15 minutes. One walked 3 to 4 minutes from a bus stop.
  • No one describes queueing. Every visitor had a reservation; one mentions people waiting outside, but they were waiting for their seating time. Whether walk-ins are accepted, nobody says.
  • Opening hours disagree on closing time: of 17 posts that list hours, 14 say 22:00 and 3 say 23:00 (March, May and July), so it isn't a dated change and we can't tell which is current. Opening times (17:00 weekdays, 15:00 weekends) agree everywhere, and 15 posts give Monday as the day off. One says to check notices for Thursdays.
  • The course price stayed at 70,000 won from a February 2026 visit to August, but the bill depends on drink: with a bottle required per two people, a couple pays 140,000 won plus a bottle (34,000–36,000 won on the bottles we saw). One post guessed their course with pairing came to 115,000 won a head.
  • Of the 26 visits, two disclose sponsorship and six say they paid. The other 18 say nothing, and several share near-identical sentences — two posts match line for line on the potted flowers, the truffle custard, the soy-pickled barley and the sashimi description — suggesting briefed, commissioned copy. Weigh their praise accordingly.
  • Six posts give the phone number 0507-1438-3120, and most booked via CatchTable or Naver. The course follows the day's catch, so the fish named in any post may not be what you get.
