Seongsudong Essem

성수동 에쎔 Essem is the letters S and M said aloud — one post says they are the owner's initials; Seongsudong is the neighbourhood.

Compiled from 19 blog posts read in fullSources →

Seongsudong Essem is a Korean-fusion place up an outside staircase in a red-brick building on a side street between Seoul Forest and Ttukseom stations. At lunch you order rice bowls and noodles at 8,000-12,000 won from a kiosk — salmon don at 12,000, pork-and-sprout don at 11,000. At dinner it serves the A course, 26,000 won a head: a salmon steak plus three dishes that change by the day, eaten as drinking food. Above the dining room is a rooftop with glass-house and dome seating. One post says it opened on 1 November 2025. We read 21 posts from 30 August 2025 to 17 August 2026; 19 describe a visit, and 11 of those went up in November 2025, the first month.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Seventeen of the 19 visit posts mention the rooftop: wind-sheltered clear enclosures — one post calls it a glass house, another describes two igloo-like domes — with camping chairs and heaters, and one writer said it wasn't cold even in November. Five posts say the rooftop can be rented by the hour and you may bring outside food if you buy drinks there, but all of them are repeating what the staff told them, so we did not count it.
  2. Nine posts mention an outdoor terrace off the dining room, and they agree it is tiny: a single table, described as a two-seater. One writer ate lunch out there on a sunny day.
  3. Eleven posts say a fried-noodle snack, like sweet-salty ramen crackers, arrives as soon as you order, and eight say omija tea is brought at the end.
  4. Fifteen of the 19 visit posts called it good value. The A course was 26,000 won a head in every post from November 2025 to June 2026; one writer pointed out that's what a single plate of pasta costs these days. Five posts said the portions were large.

  1. Seven posts say you order at a kiosk by the door; one noted that each person can pay for their own dish.
  2. Opinions on size differ: three posts found it bigger than expected, one said it isn't large. Posts list bar seats and tables for two, four and six.

Posts saying you cannot5 of 19 posts

Five posts say there is no parking of its own. The two who drove used public lots nearby: the Seoul Forest lot at 200 won per five minutes, and the Seongsu 1-ga 1-dong lot, a five-minute walk away.

Getting inside

All 11 posts that describe getting in say they climbed an outside staircase — the black stairs at the right end of the building. Which floor it is depends on the writer: 11 say the second floor, as in the address; two say the second-floor door is a different shop and you go one more flight; one says it is two flights up. There is a café half a level up, which probably explains the disagreement.

No post mentions a lift or getting in with a wheelchair or pushchair, and nobody mentions a step at the door. Everyone who described the way in took the stairs — that doesn't mean there is no lift, only that nobody wrote about one.

Four posts say the toilet is inside the restaurant; one places it right next to the open kitchen, and one says it is shared by men and women.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 20 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Nobody wrote that they had to wait. One post urged readers to go before queues start, but that wasn't a wait the writer had. Two posts repeat that dinner is by reservation, taken by phone, but neither says they booked.
  • Only one post went with a child; the owner gave the child a free crab-stick fritter and sausages. Nobody mentioned high chairs or changing tables.
  • All the opening hours are copied from listings. Most say Monday to Saturday 11:00-22:00 with a 14:00-17:00 break, and seven say closed Sundays. One post says daily, and one from the opening week gave daily 13:00-23:00. Check before going.
  • Phone numbers vary: 070-7537-2692 in three posts, 070-7537-2697 in two, and two different 0507 numbers once each. No post says which line takes reservations.
  • Some prices are missing: nobody gave the price of the B course, and the only drink price is 5,000 won for a bottle of Cass beer, in one post.
  • Eleven of the 19 visit posts appeared between 7 and 27 November 2025, and they cover the same things in much the same order: the free snack, the salmon steak, the omija tea, the kiosk. Only one post discloses sponsorship; the rest don't say either way. Two say the owner gave them a dish still in development for free.
