No post explains the choice, though one writer noticed the cups are printed with a gradient and the shop is painted in two tones, white on one side and deep green on the other.

Gradation Coffee is a specialty coffee shop in a lane in the north of Seongsu. It is small and painted deep green, and inside there is one bar counter with four or five seats. The owner buys green coffee, roasts it himself, and when you order, grinds it in front of you and hands it over to smell before any water touches it. Two things anchor the menu: the shakerato, espresso from a bean fermented with seasonal fruit, shaken and poured into a cocktail glass; and the coffee of the day, batch-brewed through a paper filter and sold at ₩3,500. Apart from almonds he roasts himself there is nothing to eat — no cake, no pastry. People come to buy beans and drip packs, and at weekends he runs an evening hand-drip class. Weekdays it opens at eight in the morning and closes at five — this is not an evening café. We read twenty-eight posts from February 2023 to August 2026; twenty-seven are visits, by twenty-seven different people.

What sets it apart
- One counter is all the seating there is. Seventeen posts say every seat is at the bar, and the two writers who counted them got four and five — four in November 2023, about five in August 2024. Six more simply say the place is small. Which means it works less as somewhere to sit than as somewhere to collect — a 2024 post calls it a small takeaway-led café outright, and four describe a steady traffic of local office workers and residents coming in for cups to go. One writer, sitting outside, watched runners stop mid-route and carry coffee away. One person found the seats uncomfortable — not especially comfortable, she writes, in August 2024. Nobody treats it as a place to open a laptop. What the counter buys you instead is the brewing happening at arm's length, with commentary.
- Eight posts mention the owner's record, and the phrase they share is Canadian national cup tasting team. The fullest version, from June 2026, has him winning the Canadian National Cup Tasters Championship in 2013 and going on to the world championship for Canada — written by someone who read the certificate on the wall. A 2023 post adds that he worked eight years for a coffee company in Vancouver before opening here. One writer looked up what cup tasting is: identifying coffees by taste and smell. Other claims recur without ever being pinned down — a world championship win, a roasting title, no competition named. We have verified none of it and count only that eleven people wrote it. Two things are more concrete: he designed a grind sifter and holds a patent on it (two posts), and he teaches — barista training, plus a hand-drip class at weekends (six posts).
- Twenty-two posts are about the owner, and they overlap on specifics. The commonest, in nine of them, is the ground coffee handed over to smell before it is brewed. The shakerato adds a step in front of that: jars of the fermented beans come out first so you can choose (five posts). Next, in five, is the glass of water that arrives before you have ordered — one writer reads it as a considered thing, a rinse before the coffee and another after so it does not stain the teeth; another had simply cycled there in the heat and was grateful. Then the explanation of that day's bean, in eight posts, with one writer given a printed card to go with it. If you cannot decide, he decides for you (four posts). One regular calls the place a sitting room, for the small talk across the counter, and six describe the visitors' notebook on the bar, filled with other people's drawings. Not one post says a bad word about the service.
- People come here to get away from the crowds in Seongsu. Nine posts call it quiet, and five of them say so by explicit contrast with the main strip — you cannot have a conversation there, they write; the cafés in the middle of it are chaos; I got shoved around at the hotspots and came here to recover. The location explains it: this is north Seongsu, ten to fifteen minutes off the main street, down a lane three writers describe as sleepy. One found it uncrowded at lunchtime in 2024; two mention quiet jazz. One post says the opposite — an October 2023 writer found it surprisingly full on a weekday. Bear in mind that with four or five seats it does not take many people to fill.
- There are chairs out on the pavement. Six posts mention them, and what they describe is less a terrace than a few seats put out front — camping, two of them call it, in the sense of sitting on the street with a drink. One watched neighbours stop for a quick cup; another thought it a good place to wait for a takeaway. With four or five seats inside, those chairs roughly double the capacity. The weather decides, though: two writers imagine how good it would be on a cool day, and two sat inside because it was too hot. Of those, one notes the air conditioning kept the inside comfortable and she went out anyway; another says the whole shopfront opens, so the breeze reaches the counter. One writer, sitting outside, could watch the trains go past.
- Thirteen posts walk from Ttukseom station and none of them quite agree on how. Four come out of exit 2, three out of exit 3, one out of exit 4, and three hedge with "exit 3 or 4". The walk runs anywhere from five to ten minutes; one writer simply gives the range, five to nine. Two put it at 518m from exit 2, one at about 500m from exit 4. Nobody reports trouble finding it — three say the green frontage catches the eye from down the lane. The more useful landmarks: one places it in the lane straight across from the Songjeong embankment, one within two minutes of the River House bus stop, and one by the tax office and the FNC Entertainment building. One writer suggests taking a cup out and walking the embankment; another watched runners doing exactly that.

Getting there
Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.
Getting inside
Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. Wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, threshold, step, kerb — none of those words appears once in twenty-seven posts. What three writers did see, and write down, is the door: "the whole front stands wide open, so the airiness reaches you before you even step in", "he leaves the door open and the cool air comes through", "the door was open and it felt that much more spacious." All three are from May 2026, so this is a shop that opens its front in good weather — and an open door is not the same as a level floor. Whether there is a lip, how wide the opening is, whether a chair could get between four or five counter stools: nobody says. This is neither a yes nor a no. It is a gap.

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Come in the evening and you will find it shut. Five on weekdays, five or six at weekends — if you want a café for the night in Seongsu, this is not it. The opening time has moved. Five posts between February 2023 and August 2024 all say nine in the morning; ten posts from 2026 all say eight. One writer draws the obvious conclusion: early enough to catch on the way to work, and it closes early to match. The closing day changed too — the oldest post, February 2023, has it shut on Sundays; every post after that has it open at weekends. The weekend closing time has moved twice. Four posts from 2023-24 say five; eleven posts between 22 April and 4 June 2026 say six; from 7 July 2026 onward, four say five again. Five is the current one, and six looks to have been a single spring. Counted flat it would be eleven to four for the spring figure, which is why the dates matter. Six posts also note that six to eight on Saturday and Sunday evening is the hand-drip class, not trading hours.
- Not one of the twenty-seven visitors mentions a lavatory — not where it is, not whether it is inside. The only record we have comes not from a customer but from the contractor who fitted the shop out (May 2025), whose build diary says the building's lavatory was in poor old shape and that they widened it and replaced the squat pan with a seated one, with photographs of the wall going in. That post is not a visit, so it is out of our count, and we have not counted this as an observation either — it is the builder speaking, not a user, and it does not even tell us whether the lavatory is inside the shop or shared with the building. Nobody says how wide the door is or whether it can be reached. What six writers did see for themselves is a hand basin in the room itself, four of them noting the Aesop and Byredo soap and hand cream beside it. One declined to wash her hands at all, for fear of interfering with the coffee.
- "Ground floor" appears more than forty times and not once because someone looked. Every one of them is address lines or the Naver check-in card at the foot of a post, copying the registered address, "Sangwon 12-gil 24-1, 1F." In twenty-seven posts the words for stairs, lift and half-landing never appear at all, and the two mentions of anything underground are both about the subway train passing the window. So the street-level entrance is the register's word, not the word of any of the twenty-seven people who went in. What they did look at, outside, was the door and the chairs in front — a small shop down a side lane that puts a few seats on the pavement.
- Nobody calls it dear, and the filter coffee is why. All five posts that talk about money point at the same cup: ₩3,500 for a hand-poured filter, which one writer flatly says barely exists in Seongsu any more and another greets with disbelief. That price has not moved in three years — ₩3,500 in April 2024 and ₩3,500 in May 2026. But it is that one cup that is cheap: the shakerato is ₩7,500, and swapping in a specialty bean adds ₩1,000. The latte is written as ₩5,000 by some and ₩6,000 by others. There are loyalty cards — one post describes separate ones for the americano and the filter coffee, another says ten cups earn twelve. On whether takeaway is cheaper or just bigger, the posts disagree: one from August 2026 says there is a discount, one from July 2026 says you get a free size up.
- One post declares a sponsorship — May 2026, and only as a hashtag on a clip embedded mid-article. Read the prose and you miss it. Four declare the opposite, one of them pre-empting the accusation: this is starting to read like an advertisement, she writes, and it is not, I paid. The other twenty-two say nothing. There is something in it for writing a review: a May 2026 post passes on the offer — write one and the owner gives you a bag of the almonds he roasts — and she took them. Three more record getting something free without any sponsorship involved: a slice of cake (May 2026), a cup of hand-drip coffee (November 2023) and a granita (July 2025), the last of which that writer describes as a summer freebie handed to anyone who orders a coffee. One further post says only that a good opportunity brought her in, without calling it a sponsorship; we have not counted it as one, but it belongs on the record.
- Half the writing went up inside five weeks. Fourteen of the twenty-eight posts are dated between 16 April and 20 May 2026. One of those discloses an arrangement; the other thirteen say nothing. They are not copies of each other — each names different drinks and different moments, and we found no shared passages. But it is worth knowing that half of what we know about this place accumulated in five weeks. It shows: those five weeks are exactly the posts that give the weekend closing as six, and the posts two months later put it back at five.
- Not one writer says they queued. In twenty-seven posts the words for waiting line, full house, packed and quiet never appear once. Waiting comes up three times and none of it is a queue: twice it is waiting for your own cup — the owner brews them one at a time in front of you, and both writers passed the time with the guestbook — and once it is a guess, "there are chairs out front too, so it'd be a nice spot to wait for a takeaway." The closest thing to a queue is a May 2026 line: "I stood there watching him brew the coffee the person ahead of me had ordered." That is one person ahead, not a wait. There are only four or five stools at the single counter, and still nobody reports being turned away for want of a seat — whether that means it is always free, or simply that nobody wrote it down, we cannot tell.
