Udon Kaden

우동카덴 Kaden is written 花伝 on the sign — literally 'flower' and 'transmission'; none of the posts explain the choice.

Chef Jeong Ho-young's udon shop sits in a lane beside Mecenatpolis, a few minutes' walk from exit 2 of Hapjeong station. It serves more than twenty cold (bukkake, zaru) and hot udon on thick, chewy house-made noodles, from 9,000 won for kake or zaru udon to 15,000 won for the cream and herring bowls, plus sides such as onigiri at 3,000 won and ebi mayo at 8,000 won; with one udon per person you get one free extra portion of noodles. Many posts remark on the size of the bowls. Closed Sundays; phone 02-6463-6362. We read 30 posts dated 7 July to 15 October 2026: 24 describe a visit (the earliest in March 2026), 5 are roundups or listings, and 1 was set aside because it was about the Yeonhui-dong flagship.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect a line. Of the 20 posts that discuss waiting, 16 waited, and the times they give are 10, 10, 15, 19, 20, 30 and 40 minutes — the 40 was a Saturday lunch. Several arrived 15–30 minutes before opening to find a queue already, and some were cut off at opening and handed waiting numbers 3 and 15. You register on the Tabling tablet at the door or remotely; two posts say remote sign-up opens at 11:40, and one says that before opening there is no tablet, so people line up on both sides of the door and the order is unclear. Two posts say the whole party must be present to be seated, and one says there are no advance reservations. Two posts walked straight in (around 7:30 on a weekday evening, and 'a little early').
  2. The room is small and the tables are close together; all 9 posts that mention its size say it is cramped. The table counts they give are about five 4-tops and ten 2-tops, five and nine, and six 2-tops with seven 4-tops; another estimated about 30 seats. Two posts describe 2-tops along both walls and 4-tops in the middle, two say you can hear every word from the next table, and one says there are only tables, no counter.
  3. The tempura stays crisp even sitting in the sauce: 9 posts describe it as crisp — one was surprised the chicken tempura kept its crunch while soaked, another that the squid held its texture in the broth. One post noted the chicken inside was faintly pink and tender, almost sous-vide.
  4. The kitchen is open: 8 posts say you can watch the cooking, one enjoyed seeing the noodles being made, and one was reassured that every cook wore a cap. Two posts say not to expect to see Chef Jeong himself here.
2 more
  1. The bowls are big. Of the 5 posts that comment on quantity, 4 found it generous — one was stunned at the bucket-sized serving — while a solo diner called it a normal single portion. Several note that the bowl's depth makes it look larger.
  2. It is close to the station: all 7 posts that describe the walk call it short — one, two, or 'under five' minutes from exit 2 of Hapjeong station.

Parking

Posts saying you cannot4 of 23 posts

There is no parking. Of the 13 posts that touch on it, 4 say so from experience and the rest copy 'no parking' from an info block. The two posts that drove parked in nearby paid lots (such as Hapjeong H Square) or further away and walked; several suggest the Mecenatpolis garage.

From the station

It is close to the station: all 7 posts that describe the walk call it short — one, two, or 'under five' minutes from exit 2 of Hapjeong station.

Getting inside

Second floor4 of 23 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 23 posts read)
Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 23 posts read)

There is now a second floor. All 4 posts that mention it describe visits from September 2026 on. A fifth-time visitor wrote that only the ground floor used to be open, and found the upstairs window seats bright and calm with their wood tones; others said the extra seats upstairs kept the wait short, or that staff opened the second floor while they were waiting.

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance, whether a wheelchair or stroller fits, or whether there is a lift to the second floor. One post places the main room on the ground floor and four mention the upstairs, but how you get up there is unknown. One family post notes there are no high chairs, though children's tableware is available.

The toilet appears to be outside the restaurant: one post says you have to step out, and another only mentions a toilet sign on the outside stairs. Nobody says whether it is separated by gender or how big it is — that is unknown, not absent.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-142 posts in one day
2026-10-122 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Service gets mixed reports: two posts found the staff kind (one played peek-a-boo with a child; another felt welcome dining alone) and two did not. Two August 2026 visits describe a wrong order that took 20 minutes, and later arrivals being served first, answered with a free drink but no apology. Others got their food in five or seven minutes.
  • The opening hours copied into posts come in two versions. Sunday closing is agreed by 16 of 17. For weekdays, 12 give 11:30–21:00 (break 14:40–17:30, last order 20:30) and 5 give 11:30–21:30 (break 15:00–17:30, last order 21:00); for Saturdays it is 20:30 closing in 7 versus 21:00 in 4. Both versions appear throughout July to October, so we cannot tell whether the hours changed. Check before you queue remotely.
  • The waiting system and seating have changed. A fifth-time visitor in September 2026 wrote that you used to write your name on paper at the door and stand outside until called; now it is the Tabling app. Posts from August 2026 visits already use Tabling, and the second floor first appears in September visits. We do not know exactly when either changed.
  • Posts disagree on when cold udon is available: one heard that all cold udon is sold only from May to September, while two posts that copied the menu say only some items, such as lime cold udon, are seasonal. October posts still ate cold bukkake udon. Menu prices were the same across posts from July to October 2026.
