Mongnogwan

목로관 Mongno is the long plank table of an old Korean tavern (as in mongno jujeom), and gwan means house.

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

Mongnogwan is a two-storey Korean barbecue house at 126 Eoulmadang-ro in the middle of Hongdae. The meat is seared over burning rice straw first, then staff finish it at your table on a cast-iron lid-shaped grill. Prices in the posts: 15,900 won a portion for straw-fire pork belly, honeycomb-cut collar or pork skirt; 39,000 won for a 600 g four-cut pork platter; 22,900 won for 250 g of bone-in pork chop; 31,900 won for 250 g of beef short rib; 3,000 won for soybean stew. We read 30 posts from October 2025 to October 2026. 25 of them describe an actual meal; one was about something else and was set aside, and four only introduce the place, so we did not count them.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You never touch the tongs. 23 of the 25 meal posts say staff grilled the meat for them. They cut it into bite-size pieces and, near the end, push kimchi, bean sprouts and chives to the edge of the grill to cook in the fat. One writer noted that when a server said the meat would be ready in a minute, it was.
  2. 15 posts say the meat arrived already seared over the straw fire. Two posts say the 600 g pork platter is the exception and comes raw; one writer switched to belly and skirt for that reason.
  3. The straw-fire searing happens in the middle of the room. Eight posts describe it: a central cooking station ringed by counter seats, with flare-ups you can watch through glass.
  4. There is a self-serve bar. 18 posts went back for more side dishes or lettuce, naming radish water kimchi, macaroni salad, chillies and garlic. One group's table faced away from it and they only noticed it at the end of the meal.
3 more
  1. It is a walk from exit 9 of Hongik University Station. 12 posts say it is close, putting the walk at anywhere from one to five minutes.
  2. Write a review and you get cold noodles. Eight posts mention the review offer: a Naver receipt review or a Google review earned a free bowl, with a choice of the squid broth noodles or the spicy pollack noodles.
  3. Two posts came with children. One, with a three-year-old, sat at a ground-floor table and says staff brought a child's cutlery and cup, and some side dishes were mild enough for the child.

Parking

5 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot5 of 24 posts

There is no car park of its own. Five posts say so and point to nearby public lots: one quotes 3,000 won per 30 minutes at the street lot a minute away, another 6,000 won an hour. Other posts only repeat a 'no parking' line copied from the listing, which we did not count.

Where it is

Map showing where Mongnogwan is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

It is a walk from exit 9 of Hongik University Station. 12 posts say it is close, putting the walk at anywhere from one to five minutes.

Getting inside

Second floor18 of 24 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 4 (of 24 posts read)
Toilet inside3 of 24 posts
Separate restrooms2 of 24 posts

The restaurant uses two floors. 18 posts mention the upstairs; four say they were seated on the ground floor. One post says you reach the upper floor by stairs.

We don't know whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or pushchair can get in. That doesn't mean there is a barrier; nobody wrote about it. Four posts sat on the ground floor, one says the upper floor is up a flight of stairs, and no one mentions a lift.

Three posts say the toilets are inside the restaurant. One adds that the women's is on the ground floor and the men's upstairs; another says they are separate and clean.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Accounts of private rooms differ. 12 posts say there is a private room on the ground floor or group rooms upstairs, but one party of more than ten says there was no group seating and they split across four-person tables. Large groups should ask ahead.
  • Waits depend on when you go. One post queued: they arrived just before 6 pm with no wait, and by 7 the line was long. Two posts found the room quiet, late at night or even on a crowded day. No one recorded how many minutes they waited.
  • Opening hours: 15 posts give 11:00 to 02:00, mostly 'daily', and seven add last orders at 01:30; one post alone says it closes at 01:30. Nearly all of these are copied from the map listing rather than observed. No post names a closing day, and one says there is no afternoon break.
  • Prices were mostly steady, with one exception. The squid cold noodles were 8,000 won in posts from August and September 2026, but one October post lists 9,000 won; with a single source we won't call it a price rise. The 2+1 pork belly deal appears only in two October 2026 posts. One post says the pork chop and short rib come in two-portion orders only.
  • Almost every post gives the phone number as 0507-1319-5587; one gives 02-332-5587. Two posts booked ahead, one by phone, and say the table was laid for their party when they arrived.
  • Of the 25 meal posts, two disclose sponsorship or a discount, two received vouchers, six say they paid their own way, and 15 say nothing. Two posts from the same marketing blog only repeat map-listing details, and one names the wrong station, so we left them out. Claims about Jensen Huang's visit, TV appearances, seating for 50 and 240-hour ageing are hearsay or the restaurant's own promotion, and we did not rely on them.
