JOYEONTAN

조연탄 합정점 Joyeontan Hapjeong-jeom Yeontan means a coal briquette, the old fuel of Korean grill houses; the posts do not explain the 'Jo', and Hapjeong-jeom simply marks the Hapjeong branch of a Mok-dong original that dates to 2005.

Compiled from 28 blog posts read in fullSources →

Joyeontan Hapjeong is a Jeju black-pork grill house at Yanghwa-ro 8-gil 13, a few minutes from Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station (listed as basement level 1). The signature is Jeju meokgogi at 17,000 won for 200 g; pork skin is 10,000 won, and pot rice, brisket doenjang stew and pollock-roe pizza are 3,000 won each. Staff grill the meat from start to finish, and a pot of ramyeon arrives free while it cooks. It is a branch of a Mok-dong original dating to 2005, and many posts describe it as newly opened in spring 2026. We read 30 posts from 7 May to 9 October 2026; two were about a bookshop upstairs and the Mok-dong flagship, so we set them aside. All of the remaining 28 describe actual visits.

Rows without a count: 9 of 18 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You do not grill here. Twenty-six of the 28 posts say staff cooked the meat: they roll the thick chunks skin-side first, cut them large with scissors and finish with scallions. Nine posts describe staff or the owner dipping the first piece in fish sauce and feeding it to the guest with tongs — one notes that tables of men get the same treatment.
  2. Twenty-six posts mention something brought free. In 25 it is the ramyeon served while the meat cooks — a sharp broth with bean sprouts, clams and green chili, which one writer found genuinely very spicy. Two posts got live octopus tossed onto every table's grill when the room was less busy. Ramyeon is also on the menu at 3,000 won, and a visit on 1 May 2026 ordered it separately as a finisher.
  3. Sixteen posts stress how thick the meat is, several wondering how anyone could grill it at home. With 200 g a portion, two posts say two portions looked small but filled them up. Twelve posts describe it as juicy.
  4. Evenings mean a wait or a booking. Five posts waited, and the times they give are 5 minutes (Saturday, 8 pm) and 10 minutes (a party of six on a holiday evening). Five posts booked ahead. Five describe red waiting chairs by the entrance; the waitlist is variously a handwritten sheet, CatchTable, or a tablet at the door. One writer arrived at 6 pm and saw the room fill completely after 6:30.

  1. Nine posts call the room roomy, with tables far enough apart that chairs do not bump, and eight call it clean. Posts repeatedly mention drawers under the round tables holding tissues, wet wipes and a bottle opener, and the menu printed on the cutlery sleeve. Several describe the folding doors thrown open in good weather so it felt like eating outdoors.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 28 posts read)
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 28 posts read)

The address says basement level 1, but no post describes going downstairs or what floor it felt like; some say the open folding doors leave it open to the street. We do not know how the entrance sits.

No post describes a step at the door or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller. 'Wheelchair accessible' appears only in copied map listings, which we do not count. That means no one wrote about it, not that access is missing.

One post describes the toilet: out the back door and to the right, a building restroom opened with a key card, unisex and clean. Another says only that it is shared but fairly clean.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Opening hours are all copied from listings. Nearly every post agrees on Sunday closing and 22:30 last orders; the most common hours are 16:00–23:00 on weekdays and 15:00–23:00 on Saturdays. One post gives a 13:00 Saturday opening and one a 22:30 weekday close.
  • Prices barely moved between May and October 2026, except steamed egg: 5,000 won in the three posts that ordered it, 3,000 won on one transcribed menu. Six posts called the prices fair and none called them high. Two portions of meat for two plus rice and stew comes to roughly 40,000 won.
  • Noise is split: two posts found it calm enough to talk, one says it gets loud and hectic when full.
  • Phone 0507-1475-5539 (six posts give the same number). Bookings are taken through Naver and by phone; one post relays that 18:30–20:00 slots must be booked by phone and same-day bookings made before 17:00.
  • Three posts disclose sponsorship, one was an invited visit, two say they paid, and 22 say nothing. More than ten posts share the same title keywords and hashtags ('Hapjeong grill house · Hapjeong Station samgyeopsal · Hongdae samgyeopsal'), so commissioned posts are likely in the mix.
