Joseon Sidae

조선시대 Joseon sidae means 'the Joseon era' — the bar is dressed as a Joseon-dynasty tavern and market street, with private rooms behind paper-screen doors.

A Korean pub in the basement of 44 Hongik-ro 3-gil in Hongdae, dressed throughout as a Joseon-era tavern and market street. The dishes people single out are the build-your-own pancake (kimchi or scallion, topped with cuttlefish or shrimp; 24,000 won for half and half, toppings 4,000 won each) and house fruit makgeolli (apple mango, 11,500 won); one pair wrote that pancake, toppings and a bottle came to 43,500 won. We read 12 posts dated 20 September to 9 October 2026. Five only matched on the word 'Joseon era' and were set aside; of the remaining seven, six describe a visit and one is the bar's own promotional post.

Rows without a count: 2 of 3 posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. All three posts that ordered the pancake called it crisp. One explained why: it arrives on a mesh rack so it stays crisp right through the middle rather than only at the edges. Another described it as thin and crisp.
  2. Two posts were seated in a separate private room. One noted the paper-screen door had holes poked in it, and that guests can choose between a noble-house corner, a tavern corner and the rooms.
  3. Two posts said the complimentary bar snack is Kkoedori, an old-school Korean puffed snack.
  4. Three posts that drank the fruit makgeolli called it sweet, and two likened it to yogurt — one said it was thick enough that they ate the last of it with a spoon.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is suje gwail makgeolli (수제 과일 막걸리) — 4 of 6 posts.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

Getting inside

In a basement2 of 6 posts

Two posts describe walking down into the basement past a tiled entrance. Neither says how many steps there are.

No one says whether a wheelchair or pram can get in, or whether there is a step at the door. One post went in by a side entrance and saw a sign telling people to take the lift, but no one actually used one. That means unknown, not absent.

No visit post describes the toilets. Separate men's and women's toilets appear only in the bar's own post, which we don't count.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 7 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Posts say it is near Hongik University Station, but none timed the walk or named an exit.
  • No post mentions waiting or walking straight in, and no one describes booking.
  • Four posts went with friends and one with coworkers. None went with family, children or a date, so we can't say how it suits those.
  • Opening hours come only from copied listings, and they disagree: two posts say noon to 2:30am (Mon–Thu) and 4am (Fri–Sat), one says it opens at 5:30pm, and the bar's own post says 4:30pm. Check before going.
  • Only one post (October 2026) gave prices, so every figure here comes from it. That post felt it was on the pricey side but said the pancake was about one and a half times bigger than expected.
  • The phone number (0507-1478-1045) and booking link appear only in the bar's own promotional post; no visitor mentions phoning ahead.
  • Of the seven posts, one is the bar's own promotion and one is a Q&A-format piece that reads like commissioned copy; two others share the same layout of address block, hours block and a closing Naver Place link. None disclose sponsorship, but repeated lines such as the loyalty discount (10% on the second visit, 20% on the fifth, 30% on the seventh) are the bar's own offers and we don't count them.
