Ilpyeon Jangeo
일편장어 Ilpyeon means 'one piece'; the shop's sign reads 'a piece of freshness, a piece of care', and jangeo is eel.
Compiled from 26 blog posts read in fullSources →
Ilpyeon Jangeo, which bloggers call the Hongdae flagship, is a charcoal freshwater-eel house on the second floor of the building above Harmony Mart at 15 Yanghwa-ro 16-gil, Mapo. When you order, staff bring the live eel to your table, then grill the cleaned fish over charcoal from start to finish. In posts from July 2026 on, the A set (two eels, grilled vegetables, flying-fish-roe rice) is 106,000 won and a single eel 45,000 won; eel soup comes free. We read 30 posts dated 31 August 2025 to 2 October 2026; 26 describe an actual meal. Two were about an escape room on the fourth floor and were set aside, and two only introduced the place.

Rows without a count: 17 of 17 posts.
Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- Staff do the grilling — all 26 meal posts say so. They salt the eel, add water parsley, garlic or leeks, cut it into bites and move it to a warming plate beside the grill. Many writers had a server wrap the first ssam and explain how to eat it; several note the vegetables are yours to grill once the eel is done.
- There are many foreign diners: 17 of the 26 meal posts mention them. One writer was greeted in English first; others note menus in English, Chinese and Japanese, and several describe tourists handling the live eel for photos.
- Ten writers booked ahead. Several found the side dishes already laid out on arrival, and one seated near the door counted more than ten foreign parties turned away for lack of a booking. Bookings were made through Naver and CatchTable; the number posts give is 0507-1384-6716.
- Twelve posts describe a seated waiting area at the entrance, decorated with plush toys and cushions. Nineteen call the room spacious and twelve clean, with frequent mentions of generous gaps between tables.
1 more
- Eight writers walked from Hongik University station exit 9 (five to seven minutes) or a bus stop (about two minutes).

There is no parking. Four writers dealt with it directly — taking the bus, using a public lot across the street, or paying at a nearby hotel garage. The 'no parking' lines in other posts are copied listing info.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.
From the station
Eight writers walked from Hongik University station exit 9 (five to seven minutes) or a bus stop (about two minutes).
Getting inside
| Second floor | 16 of 26 posts |
|---|---|
| In a basement | yes 0 · no 16 (of 26 posts read) |
| Lift to the floor | 5 of 26 posts |
| Toilet inside | 6 of 26 posts |
| Separate restrooms | 4 of 26 posts |
Sixteen posts place it on the second floor, and five of them mention a lift (one writer took the stairs instead). Several say the entrance is on the right side of the Harmony Mart building.
Nobody wrote about a step at the door or entering with a wheelchair or stroller. One post copied a listing line saying the entrance is wheelchair-accessible; we did not count it. All we know is that five posts mention a lift to the second floor.
Six posts say the toilets are inside the restaurant; four say they are separate for men and women.
No one mentioned: Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 28 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- No one wrote about queuing. One post says waits are not long, and long peak-time waits appear only as hearsay in one other. That does not mean there is no wait — just that nobody reported one.
- Prices have changed. In October 2025 and March 2026 posts the cheese egg, noodles and roe rice were 7,000 won and the A set 105,000 won (one post showed it marked down from 110,000); from July 2026 the sides are 8,000 won and the A set 106,000 won. A single eel stayed at 45,000 won and ades at 7,000. Three writers found the meal good value; one called it a little pricey.
- Opening hours changed. Posts from 31 August and 1 September 2025 give 12:00-23:00 daily; seventeen posts from October 2025 on agree on 12:00-23:00 Monday to Thursday and 12:00-midnight Friday to Sunday, last order an hour before closing — all copied listing info. One writer who went for a late weekday lunch confirmed there is no afternoon break.
- Much of the coverage is promotional. Two posts disclose sponsorship and only one says the writer paid. Many August-September 2026 posts repeat the same lines about staff grilling training, twice-fired oak charcoal and a visit from chef Edward Lee, and six say mentioning the blog gets a free drink. The Edward Lee visit, the grade-1 japonica eel and the fisheries certification come from photos and signs in the shop, so we did not treat them as evidence.
- The A set's contents vary in two posts: most list two eels, grilled vegetables and roe rice, but one March 2026 post had noodles instead of the rice and one September 2025 post had the steamed egg.
