Japanese

Ochaya

오차야 Ochaya reads as 'tea house' in Japanese (o-cha, tea, plus -ya, shop) — fitting for a place built around ochazuke, rice with broth poured over it.

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

An ochazuke specialist on the second floor of a building on Wausan-ro 13-gil, a couple of hundred metres from Sangsu Station exit 1, above a taco shop. Toppings such as pork belly, salmon, eel, chopped seafood or pollock roe sit on mixed-grain rice, and broth comes separately in a small jug: you eat half as a rice bowl, then pour the broth over the rest. Bowls run from 10,000 won (pollock roe) to 16,000 won (eel), ordered at a kiosk by the door. We read 30 posts from 18 August to 28 October 2026, set aside 2 about other restaurants, and counted the 26 that describe eating here.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. One wall is floor-to-ceiling glass. Thirteen posts mention the light through it; one says window seats fill quickly and another found them all taken.
  2. It is set up for solo diners. Thirteen posts describe a mix of bar seats, two-tops and four-tops; four mention phone stands at the bar and five a phone charger by the water station. Two posts came alone, six as a couple.
  3. You order at the kiosk by the entrance first, as eleven posts describe; water, aprons and wipes are self-serve. Three posts actually asked for more rice, seaweed or side dishes and got them; many more simply repeat that refills are allowed.
  4. Most found the seasoning mild: five posts said it was not salty, while one found the broth salty and sweet enough not to return. Three posts called the eel glaze sweet.

  1. Four posts found it quiet enough to talk. One disagreed: seated right by the open kitchen, they could barely talk over the dishwashing. Four posts mention the open kitchen.

Assume no parking: one post says there is none, another that there didn't seem to be a lot, and the many 'no parking' lines are copied from Naver. Four posts came by subway, from Sangsu or Hapjeong.

Getting inside

Second floor16 of 24 posts
Lift to the floor2 of 24 posts
Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 24 posts read)

It is upstairs. Sixteen posts describe climbing to the second floor, several telling you to look for the taco shop sign below. Two posts say there is also a lift, through a door behind the stairs.

Two posts say there is a lift, and one adds that wheelchair users should manage. No one wrote whether the entrance has a step or actually went in with a wheelchair or stroller. One post saw high chairs.

The toilet seems to be outside the restaurant: one post says it is half a flight up outside the door. Another says it is right inside the entrance, but that post mixes in the Yeonnam branch address, so we could not settle it. 'Shared building toilet' appears only in copied listings, and no one said whether toilets are separated by gender.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Only two posts mention waiting: about 10 minutes for a seat after 1 pm on a Saturday, and none at 3 pm on another Saturday. Weekday visits at 2, 4:30 and 6 pm only say customers kept arriving. Several posts repeat that Naver booking is available; one saw many guests who had booked.
  • Nineteen visit posts give the same hours, 11:30–20:30 with last order at 19:50, and several say there is no afternoon break; most of this is copied, and one copied block alone lists a 15:00–16:30 break. No post mentions a closing day. Four posts give the phone number 010-5633-5884, and some say you can book through Naver or by phone.
  • Bowls cost 10,000–16,000 won; one couple paid 33,000 won for two bowls and fried shrimp. Six posts called it reasonable and none called it expensive. Prices are identical across the period, with no sign of change.
  • Of the 26 visit posts, six say they paid themselves, three were invited or given the meal, one discloses sponsorship, and sixteen say nothing. Menu blurbs, the 'first ochazuke shop in Hapjeong' line and the TV appearances are the shop's own claims, so we did not rely on them.
