논고을 A sixty-year-old charcoal grill house in a Sadang back lane, known for Black Angus short rib at pork prices

Korean · Dongjak-gu, Sadang-dong

Data as of · Published ·

Nongoeul is an old charcoal beef house in a back lane of the Sadang eating alley, three to five minutes on foot from exits 7 and 8 at Sadang station. A brazier of charcoal comes up through the middle of the table and you grill your own. It sells four cuts — short rib, outside skirt, beef tripe, Jeju pork belly — plus cold noodles and rice, and the ₩1,000 bowl of rice brings a free stew with it, kimchi or soybean paste. Green sign, timber walls; a good many writers repeat that it has stood sixty years. It became widely known after coming first in the Sadang episode of the YouTube show Ttogan-jip, and several say the queue has been longer since. Open every day, 11:30 to midnight. There is no booking and no remote queue — you stand outside the door. The posts we read run from October 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Opinion divides on whether the meat is special, and it divides lopsidedly. Nobody says it is bad. What several do say is that it is good and no more than good — 'it tastes like short rib, which is what it is'; 'this is not a place where the beef is genuinely great'; 'not a life-changing grill house'. Almost every one of them follows it with some version of *but at this price*. Against that, others rate it alongside Korean-beef houses costing far more. A recurring observation: the meat arrives already lightly seasoned, and one writer credits exactly that for keeping them coming back.
  2. What this place is really selling is beef at the price of pork. A 150g portion of short rib is ₩16,000; 180g of Jeju pork belly is also ₩16,000. One writer went round seven grill houses near Sadang station comparing the same cut, found ₩17,000 to ₩22,000 everywhere else, and put Nongoeul at the bottom of the list. Add the ₩1,000 rice that brings a stew with it and the word that keeps appearing is *generous*. One dissent worth keeping: because it is cheap you keep ordering, and that writer's table still came to ₩40,000 a head.
  3. The queue is a question of when you go. Those who arrived around six in the evening either walked in or waited under ten minutes; one who got there at half past six on a Friday found five groups ahead and waited an hour. Saturday noon and weekday lunch: no wait at all. One writer turned up at half past eight on a weekday to a full room and was seated straight away, the tables turning that fast. Many of those who walked in note that there was a line outside by the time they left. There is no waiting area and no sign-up system — you stand in the lane in the order you arrive, and one writer warns that cars keep coming through it. Two saw a numbered ticket board and one recalls writing a name on a list, so accounts differ on that.
  4. Of the banchan, it is the spring-onion salad that people write about. It comes a plate per person, and staff refill it as they pass without being asked. Two writers went through two refills; one describes it landing in a heap; another says refill requests go round the room like a song in the round. It is dressed fresh, and one writer is glad the sauce is not the usual red vinegar kind. Several also note that the grill plate gets changed without asking. Set against that, others found staff hard to flag down — being looked after and being answered when you call turn out to be two different things here.

Parking

2 posts say you can park; 1 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park2 of 28 posts
Posts saying you cannot1 of 28 posts

Most of what is written about parking was copied, not seen. The sentence *Sadang 1 and Sadang 2 public car parks, first hour free* appears in some fifteen posts in near-identical form, but only two writers actually parked a car. One found the lot half empty at half past five on a weekday; the other waited thirty minutes for a table and another thirty for a space, and advises leaving time for both. One post states there is no parking at the restaurant itself. That many posts say parking is available does not mean that many people parked.

Getting there

Map showing where Nongoeul is

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Not one writer mentions the step at the door or getting in with wheels. Across all twenty-eight visits, the words threshold, ramp, lift, wheelchair and pushchair do not appear once. Many describe an old building down a narrow lane; none describes the doorway. Short of phoning ahead, we have no way to tell you.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Smoke and cleanliness are the two complaints that come up most. There is no extraction at the tables, so it rises into the room: 'I thought it was dry ice'; 'hot, stinging eyes, hard going'. One writer says it was not like this on an earlier visit, and topping up the water under the grill several times changed nothing. On cleanliness, several put it down to the age of the place; one went in having read that the vegetables were poorly kept, arrived early, and found them fresh. Another left the kimchi alone on seeing it was imported. What we have is what customers saw with their own eyes, not any inspection record.
  • We know almost nothing about the toilet. Of the twenty-eight visits we read, exactly one mentions it, and that in six words: the toilet is rough. Nobody says whether it is inside the restaurant or out in the building, whether men's and women's are separate, or whether there is an accessible one. That is a gap in what was written, not a statement about the place.
  • The evidence on which floor it occupies is thin. One post gives it as ground floor — and even that comes in the address line at the top of the piece, not in anything the writer describes. The other twenty-seven say nothing about floors, and none mentions stairs. Four describe a separate room of about four tables reached by going past the kitchen, but nobody says whether it is on the same level.
  • Not one post declares a sponsorship. Thirteen of the twenty-eight state they paid their own way, three of them going out of their way to say so — *no sponsorship of any kind*, *#notsponsored*. The other fifteen say nothing at all about who paid, and silence is not proof that nobody did; it only means we do not know. Separately: eighteen posts give the opening hours and all eighteen agree on 11:30 to midnight daily. A single post says 11:30 to 22:00 and closed Mondays — the same post puts the restaurant in the wrong district, so we have treated it as another place's details and left it out.
