명화당 Dang means a hall or house; none of the posts explain what myeonghwa stands for.

Compiled from 11 blog posts read in fullSources →

A snack-food (bunsik) shop on the second floor of a building on Myeongdong 4-gil, open since 1980. People come for the yellowish house gimbap, made with rice seasoned in a sweet-sour dressing, and bibim jjolmyeon topped with bean sprouts and spinach. Gimbap and tteokbokki are 4,800 won, jjolmyeon 8,000 won, and the cutlet, the most expensive dish, 9,500 won. Many posts describe ordering several dishes to share. We read 18 posts dated 2 May to 12 October 2026. Twelve describe eating here, one of them a 2022 visit reposted later. Four are list posts with no visit, and we set aside two that were about other places.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Nine of the 12 visit posts called the food sweet: sweet-and-salty gimbap, tteokbokki with little heat and plenty of sweetness, and one post said nearly everything was on the sweet side. One more said it was sweet but not as sweet as modern tteokbokki, so we left that one undecided.
  2. Food comes out fast. Three posts said so, one timing it at under five minutes. One post noted that the meat dumplings take a little longer and are worth ordering early.
  3. Three posts came with children: a mother with her ten-year-old daughter, a family of eight changing a baby's diapers between bites, and two families whose kids liked the non-spicy pot noodles. In all, four posts went with family, two with friends and three in groups of four or more.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 11 posts

One post that came by car said the shop has no parking and nearby paid lots were almost full. Another post says you get two hours free by registering your car in the Lotte Department Store app, but that comes from an information block and we couldn't confirm it.

Getting inside

Second floor3 of 11 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 3 (of 11 posts read)

The shop is upstairs. Three posts describe going up to the second floor, two of them mentioning a steep staircase. The post written by someone who went with their parents suggests that one person go up first to check for a table when bringing older relatives.

We don't know whether there is a lift or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get up. Posts mention only the stairs. That doesn't mean there is no other way up, just that nobody wrote about one.

We don't know where the toilet is or whether it is split by gender. No post mentions it.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 15 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-012 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices have gone up. One post lists gimbap and tteokbokki at 4,500 won each. A May 2026 post said prices had risen by about 300 won and gave 4,800 won for gimbap, and a September post gives the same. Three posts called it good value for Myeongdong; none called it expensive.
  • Accounts differ on foreign visitors: three posts saw foreign or Japanese tourists, while one called it a Koreans-only spot.
  • Three posts, all from September, said the tteokbokki rice cakes were hard in the middle.
  • One post describes walking from exit 6 of Myeongdong Station. Another says it is about 250 m from that exit, but that comes from an information block, not from the visit.
  • Only one post saw a queue. They arrived around 11:50 on a weekend and sat straight down, but the people behind them had to wait. A family of eight visiting over Chuseok got the last free table. No post says how long anyone waited.
  • None of the visit posts clearly says the writer ate here alone.
  • Opening hours: all three visit posts that mention them agree on 9:00 to 22:30 daily, and one walked in right at 9 a.m. No visit post gives a closing day. A list post says it closes for Lunar New Year and Chuseok, but another family ate here during the Chuseok holiday, so we couldn't confirm that.
  • No post gives a phone number, and we don't know whether it takes reservations.
