Chinese

Haenghwachon

행화촌 Haenghwachon (杏花村) means 'apricot-blossom village' — the tavern village a herd boy points to in Du Mu's Tang poem 'Qingming'.

Compiled from 22 blog posts read in fullSources →

Haenghwachon is an ethnic-Chinese (hwagyo) restaurant in the Chinese-embassy alley of Myeongdong, Seoul, occupying the second and third floors of the building with Hyangmi on the ground floor. Meals run from 6,000-won jjajangmyeon and 8,500-won ganjjajang, jjamppong and fried rice; dishes include lajogi (34,000 won), chili prawns and yusanseul, and many tables order the 29,000- or 32,000-won sets that pair noodles with a fried dish. We read 30 posts from 14 Aug to 6 Oct 2026; 22 describe a meal there. Five were about other restaurants (two Haenghwachon in Suwon, Taehwawon in Incheon, Gaehwa and Hyangmi next door) and three only relayed the Meokeultende video, so we did not count them.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Thirteen posts call it cheap. Prices in Aug-Oct 2026: jjajangmyeon 6,000 won; ganjjajang, jjamppong and fried rice 8,500; samseon jjamppong and lajoyuk rice 10,500. One office worker wrote that you eat well and full for under 10,000 won, unheard of for Myeongdong.
  2. Five posts mention the windows looking across at the Shinsegae flagship; a group that ate in a second-floor room noted the view of its Christmas light display.
  3. Five posts mention private or group rooms; one group used a second-floor room for a company dinner.
  4. Four posts note a cup of tea comes with the pickled radish, onion and black-bean paste; two say it was chilled jasmine tea.
3 more
  1. Five posts call the portions large — a colleague struggled to finish the japchae rice, and another diner was stuffed by the platter jjajang.
  2. Six posts found the staff friendly; one mentions a server asking the name of the dog in its carrier.
  3. Four posts walked straight in — around 11:30 on a weekday, just after 11, a weekday evening and a weekend evening — and one reports a lunch queue. The 11:30 visitor saw it nearly full by noon; the queue post says a two-seat table still comes quickly if you arrive around 11:40.

Parking

1 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 22 posts

One post says parking is very difficult and suggests the Lotte Department Store or Central Post Office car parks; another thought there was no parking and advised public transport. Three more list 'no parking' in copied info blocks, which we did not count.

Getting inside

Second floor10 of 22 posts

Ten posts describe going up to the second floor — Hyangmi is downstairs and Haenghwachon is above it, reached through the right-hand entrance of a red three-storey building. Several say it uses both the second and third floors.

The restaurant is on the second and third floors, but no post says whether you climb stairs or take a lift, or whether there is a step at the door. That means nobody wrote about it, not that there is none.

No post says where the toilet is or whether it is separated by gender. We don't know.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Batter splits: six posts found the sweet-and-sour pork or lajogi crisp, while two described the lajogi and chili-prawn coating as a chewy, glutinous-rice style batter.
  • Heat splits four to three. On the lajogi alone, two posts called it spicy and two found it mild; one said the mapo tofu rice had almost no heat.
  • Sweetness splits five to three. Four found the jjajang sauce sweet; the two that said it was not are near-identical posts published the same day.
  • Space splits three to two: some found plenty of seating across two floors, one found the tables uncomfortably close, and one estimated only five or six four-tops and a few two-tops.
  • Two posts put it near Myeongdong Station exit 5, about six minutes on foot; no other post describes the way by train or bus.
  • Nine posts list opening hours and mostly agree: weekdays 11:00-21:00 with a 15:00-17:00 break, weekends 11:00-20:00 with a 16:00-17:00 break. One gave a single 16:00-17:00 break. Two near-identical posts say it never closes; one says it shuts on New Year's Day, Seollal and Chuseok. Most of this is copied from listings. Two posts say the soju set is served only after 1 p.m. and the beer set after 3 p.m.
  • Jjajangmyeon once cost 5,000 won: a summary of the Meokeultende video says it rose to 6,000 'from November', without a year. Every post we read from August 2026 on gives 6,000 won, one adding that even that is a big rise.
  • Five posts give the same phone number, 02-771-0172. Booking comes with conditions: one post says groups and rooms must book by phone, a party of four was told only groups can reserve, and a company dinner was told a group booking requires at least 30,000 won per person.
  • One diner brought liquor bought in China and paid a 10,000-won corkage per bottle — allowed, but not free.
  • One post brought a dog in a carrier but stresses the restaurant is not normally pet-friendly; they called ahead for permission.
  • Other restaurants share the name: two posts about Haenghwachon branches in Suwon were excluded. The registered address is 52-1 Namdaemun-ro, but every post writes 52-5, the same number as Hyangmi and Gaehwa. Two posts from 5 September follow an identical template; we counted both, so treat them as overlapping.
