Donghaedo Gwanghwamun-jeom

동해도 광화문점 Donghae means the East Sea; the posts do not explain why the house took the name.

Compiled from 26 blog posts read in fullSources →

Donghaedo Gwanghwamun is a Japanese restaurant in the first basement of the Cygnus Building on Mugyo-ro that you can eat at in two ways. The hall runs a one-hour all-you-can-eat conveyor sushi buffet at 27,800 won for weekday lunch, 28,800 won for weekday dinner and 29,800 won at weekends and on holidays; the private rooms behind it serve sashimi omakase (100,000 won), sushi omakase (70,000 won lunch, 90,000 won dinner) and set courses from 60,000 to 120,000 won. We read 30 posts dated 21 March to 1 October 2026. Two were about other restaurants and two compiled information without a visit, leaving 26 visits: 14 had the conveyor buffet and 11 a course or set meal in the rooms.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The conveyor buffet has a one-hour limit. Twelve posts mention it and none ran out of time: one couple finished in 45 minutes, another had eaten their fill after 30. A single post says slow eaters may find it a little tight.
  2. Nine posts describe the opening move: staff hand you a slip, you tick up to five pieces per person, and they are made to order on the spot. After that, anything not on the belt, and the free roe rice, is ordered on the seat tablet — eleven posts ordered that way. Several also note that wasabi and soy sauce come in single-use packets.
  3. Posts disagree on how much rice is under the fish: four say little, two say a lot. In one, a long-time regular remarked that the rice seemed to have grown; in another, staff said the rice must not be left, so the diners ended up overfull.
  4. Sixteen posts mention closed-door private rooms behind the counter seats. Those who ate in them found them quiet compared with the lively hall (five posts); one notes you take your shoes off but sit with your legs in a sunken well, as on a chair. The '2 to 50 seats' figure is copied from the restaurant's own notice.

  1. Thirteen posts describe the walk: three to eight minutes from Gwanghwamun exit 5, City Hall exit 4 or Jonggak exit 5, and two came by bus. Nine say you go down to the basement; one describes a ground-floor entrance leading down to a half-basement.
  2. No post calls it expensive; thirteen say it is good value. For the buffet, writers point out that roe rice, cup noodles and desserts are included for under 30,000 won; for the room courses, that the spread is good for the price. One post skipped the premium toppings because adding them pushes the bill up considerably.

The most ordered dish is hoejeon-chobap muhan-ripil (회전초밥 무한리필) — 14 of 26 posts.

Posts saying you can park1 of 26 posts

Only one post actually parked, and found the building's parking attendant very friendly. The other twelve posts' parking details — one hour free at lunch, three at dinner, mechanical parking for cars, SUVs at ground level, the Dadong public car park as overflow — are copied from the restaurant's notice and we did not count them.

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

Thirteen posts describe the walk: three to eight minutes from Gwanghwamun exit 5, City Hall exit 4 or Jonggak exit 5, and two came by bus. Nine say you go down to the basement; one describes a ground-floor entrance leading down to a half-basement.

Getting inside

In a basement9 of 26 posts

We do not know whether a wheelchair or pushchair can get in. No post mentions a lift or an entrance step — that means nobody wrote about it, not that there is none. Three posts walked down stairs to the basement.

No post says where the toilets are or whether they are separate for men and women.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The opening plate varies. Nine posts chose five pieces each, but one (22 September) got three set pieces per person and says the old system no longer applies. One post says the order service is a dinner thing, another that lunch brought fewer pieces than dinner — so it may be lunch versus dinner, but we could not confirm it.
  • We know little about waiting. One post saw a queue for the conveyor buffet. Others say lunchtime is busy, but nobody gives a wait in minutes, and one diner arriving after half past twelve found the hall empty.
  • Opening hours differ slightly between the copied information blocks. Of 23 posts giving hours, the most common is Monday–Saturday 11:00–22:00 with a 14:30–17:00 break and last orders at 20:00, and twelve say it is closed on Sundays. Some add that the conveyor buffet stops at 20:30. Two posts sharing one block give daily 11:30–22:00, a 15:00–17:00 break and the phone number 0507-1424-1264; the rest give 02-757-1222. Several note bookings can be made through Naver.
  • The buffet prices are a promotional discount; the regular prices are 28,800 won weekday lunch, 29,800 won weekday dinner and 30,800 won at weekends, and no post says when the offer ends. One post gives 28,800 won for weekday lunch. For room omakase, an April 2026 post found promotional prices (85,000 won sashimi, 55,000 won lunch sushi); posts from August on show 100,000 and 70,000 won.
  • Nine room-course posts follow nearly the same dish order and phrasing, and only some disclose sponsorship. Of the 26 visits, two declare paid content, two were hosted or given meal vouchers, two say they paid themselves, and twenty say nothing.
