Korean

Hongeo Monyeo

홍어모녀 Hongeo is skate, the fermented ray of Korea's southwest, and monyeo means mother and daughter — one post says the owner's daughter used to help on busy days, which is where the name comes from.

Compiled from 26 blog posts read in fullSources →

Hongeo Monyeo is a fermented-skate specialist on Yeonghwasa-ro 59-1 in Junggok-dong, Gwangjin-gu, on the main road near the Achasan trailhead. The most common order is an off-menu trio of skate sashimi, spicy skate salad and skate liver; samhap starts at 45,000 won and sashimi at 30,000 for a small. People drink makgeolli with it and refill kimchi and pickled radish from a self-serve bar. We read 30 posts from June 3 to October 18, 2026; 26 record an actual meal. Of those, 2 say they were reviewer invitations and 1 says it was sponsored, and many of the September–October posts end with the same hashtag block and repeat the same phrases. Sometime before August 2026 the shop moved here from a side street.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Before the main plates arrive, the house brings free skate extras — skin jelly, skate snout, fermented skate relish. 21 of the 26 visit posts mention this. A June 2026 post was told that during the two-to-three-month closed fishing season only the relish and jelly are available.
  2. 19 posts describe the prices as low. Menu prices: small samhap 45,000 won, small sashimi 30,000, small spicy salad 25,000, small skate liver 20,000, liver stew 15,000 per person, soju 4,000. The oft-repeated '50% cheaper than other skate places' and '100% domestic skate' are the shop's own claims, copied into posts, so we don't count them; one sponsored post even mentions imported skate alongside domestic.
  3. 20 posts call it clean for a skate house; 3 mention an open kitchen you can see into, and one describes polished tables and floor. Smell is mixed: many say there was hardly any, while others say the skate smell is definitely there.
  4. Several posts say a bus stop is right outside the door, and one times the walk from Achasan Station exit 1 at 7–8 minutes. 7 posts describe getting there first-hand.
2 more
  1. 15 posts call the staff kind. Many say the owner or staff demonstrated — or wrapped for them — the pickled radish, skate, pork and relish bite; some got extra skate or bitter melon on the house. One October 2026 post says the owner was working alone, so dishes came out one at a time.
  2. Kimchi, pickled radish and the doenjang soup are refilled from a self-serve bar; 12 posts did so. Several describe the house soup as doenjang with snails.

From the station

Several posts say a bus stop is right outside the door, and one times the walk from Achasan Station exit 1 at 7–8 minutes. 7 posts describe getting there first-hand.

Getting inside

Toilet inside5 of 26 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 26 posts read)

No post describes the floor or any stairs from experience; only the address says ground floor. That means nobody wrote about it, not that there is nothing to know.

No post mentions a step at the entrance or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller. We don't know.

5 posts say from experience that the restroom is inside the shop. Whether it is split by gender is unclear: one first-hand post says unisex, while a copied info block says separate.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • An August 2026 post says the shop used to be tucked among houses and has moved out to the wide road; an October post was told it had been takeout-only before expanding into this space. We don't know the month of the move, or whether the two June 2026 posts describe the old or new shop.
  • No post reports waiting. One went around 3 p.m. and found plenty of seats; another arrived at opening to an empty room that was nearly full by the time they left. We don't know about weekend evenings or hiking-crowd peaks.
  • Companions vary: 7 posts went with family (mother, father, husband, brother), 4 with a partner, 3 with friends. Nobody went with children, so we can't say how it suits kids.
  • Opinions on the skate liver split one against one: very rich versus not greasy at all. On sweetness, one sponsored post found the cold noodles and kimchi sweet, another sponsored post found the salad dressing not sweet.
  • 14 posts give 12:00–22:00, closed Mondays, mostly copied from the listing; one contradicts itself, saying Tuesday–Sunday but closed Sundays. 3 posts say there is no afternoon break, and some were told the shop stays open later for reservations.
  • 6 posts give the phone number 0507-1310-7554; one lists 010-5273-7554 for bookings. 'Reservations and groups welcome' comes from copied listings; no post describes actually booking.
  • Many posts call it cheap, but only one — a sponsored visit — totals what two people paid (51,000 won on top of the free items). Otherwise a meal's cost has to be pieced together from the menu.
