Myeongdong Dakhanmari Sijojeom
명동닭한마리 시조점 Dakhanmari means 'one whole chicken', the Dongdaemun dish of a whole chicken simmered in broth at the table; Myeongdong Dakhanmari is a brand shared with the main branch and the Geoseong branch next door, and sijo means 'founder', so Sijojeom reads as 'the founder's branch'.

Myeongdong Dakhanmari Sijojeom is a dakhanmari house in the chicken alley between Dongdaemun and Jongno 5-ga stations (Jongno 40ga-gil 10). A big pot with a whole raw chicken boils at your table; you mix your own dipping sauce from the soy sauce, mustard and chili paste on the table plus garlic, vinegar and chives, eat the rice cake first, and finish with noodles (2,000 won). Dakhanmari is 33,000 won for two, and several posts said three people get an extra half chicken for 50,000 won. Several also said the chicken arrived, sized to the party, before anyone ordered. We read 29 posts dated May 28 to October 17, 2026; 20 of them ate here. Seven were about the same-name main branch (Jongno 40ga-gil 14) or Geoseong branch (Jongno 252-9) next door, and we did not count them.

What sets it apart
- Waits vary. Three posts waited: about 30 minutes at 7 p.m. on a Saturday (the famous place next door was at queue number 47), a line forming right after one party sat down on a weekend afternoon, and a short wait at mealtime. Four did not: two who came around 10:50 and 11 a.m. on a Sunday found plenty of seats, and a lunchtime visitor said there was no line though the room was full.
- Four posts came with children. A family with two grade-schoolers made the kids' sauce from just soy sauce and vinegar, skipping the chili paste; another said the children ate without complaint. Nobody mentioned high chairs or anything for kids to do.
- Four posts said neither the chicken nor the broth had any off smell; none said it did.
- Five posts saw many foreign diners themselves; a Friday-evening visitor put it at half foreign, half Korean, and others singled out Japanese tourists.

Only one post actually drove: the restaurant offers no parking, so they used the Doota Mall lot nine minutes' walk away, which gives two free hours with a purchase. Other 'no parking' lines were copied listings.

What we do not know
- Four posts found the portions large; one found the chicken too small, and tough.
- Opinions on price split: two posts called 33,000 won for two reasonable, and one found it steeper than expected, balking at 50,000 won for three. One party of four paid 72,000 won for two chickens plus add-ons; a pair paid 35,000 won for one chicken and a noodle portion.
- Noise is split: two posts found it loud even when not full, one found it calmer than the busy place next door. Two posts noted a wide hall with tables set fairly close together and no private rooms.
- Two posts described the walk in their own words: four minutes from Dongdaemun Station, or out exit 9, past the banks and into the alley. Lines like 'exit 9, five minutes' elsewhere were copied listings and not counted.
- Opening hours appear in 12 posts: 11 say 10:00 to 23:30 daily, one says 23:00. Five say it closes on the day of major holidays. All of these were copied from the Naver listing, not checked in person. Seven posts give the phone number 02-2275-3125, and reservations are by phone.
- The same-name main branch (Jongno 40ga-gil 14) and Geoseong branch (Jongno 252-9) sit right next door, and people mix them up; one visitor walked in by mistake and another wrote the main branch's address. The claim that the owner's son runs the main branch is hearsay.
