Pungmidam Jangan-dong Bonjeom

풍미담 장안동본점 pungmi means the flavour that lingers; the shop fries pork belly, neck and beef short rib once in hot oil and then finishes them over charcoal at your table. Jangan-dong is the neighbourhood, and this is the branch the name started from.

Korean · Dongdaemun-gu, Jangan-dong

Data as of · Published ·

Pungmidam is a grill house on the ground floor of a shopping block on Jangan-dong's restaurant street, across from the Hyundai Hometown apartments. The registered name is the short one; the sign and the writers use the longer 'Jangan-dong main branch'. Its method is the thing it sells: pork belly, neck and beef short rib are deep-fried once at high heat, then finished over charcoal at your table. Beef and pork share one board. Eleven in the morning until midnight, with a lunch trade as well. For a grill house it keeps an unusual amount of wine, sold by the glass and the bottle. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The meat arrives already fried once. The shop calls this double grilling, and its own sentence about it is copied word for word into post after post — so we did not count that sentence as evidence. Taking only what writers say they saw: the outside is already cooked, so it finishes fast on the grill; one writer says it never gets the chance to toughen, another was told by staff exactly when to eat it before it overcooked. The belly and the neck come part-cooked, but one post notes the jowl comes raw. The frying takes time, and one writer who waited for it advises ordering the meat first and choosing sides afterwards.
  2. Staff or the owner come to the table and grill for you. One writer describes the rhythm: one portion grilled, moved to the warm edge of the plate, and the rest started when you are a bite or two in. It is not guaranteed. One post says the owner does it when things are quiet; another was told they try to but cannot when it gets busy; and one writer waited while staff were tied up and had the grill scorch. Some report only the first round being cooked for them.
  3. A grill house that sells wine. The rack stands between the door and the group tables and doubles as a partition. A glass is ₩4,000; bottles are put at ₩10,000–30,000, and one writer found one under ₩20,000 and took it over the usual beer-and-soju. Two posts say corkage is accepted for a fee. Plenty of people photographed the wine; only two wrote about drinking it, and the rest end on 'next time, with the beef'.
  4. Write the receipt review and you pick something. The choice is a pork-and-kimchi stew, soju, beer or a soft drink, and one writer swapped the stew for soft tofu. One notes that most places only offer a soft drink, so being able to take beer or soju is worth more; another watched a neighbouring table claim it. Separately, one writer says booking through Naver gets you a steamed egg.
  5. Small courtesies turn up again and again. Several writers note hair ties, alcohol swabs, floss and toothpicks laid out, and an ice cream on the way out. One had a handheld fan brought over when their child found the steamed egg too hot; another was given boiled potatoes, set aside from the potato salad, so the toddler had something to eat. One refilled the side dishes twice. Two writers were let down: the scorched grill above, and a soybean stew that was missed on the order and arrived long after its rice.
  6. The seating comes in several shapes. Group tables sit at the back; out front there are tables you face each other across and tables where you sit side by side. By the window is a one-person spot which, with the window open, becomes a two-seater with one person outside and one in, and with it shut goes back to a single. Several writers say you could eat here alone without feeling watched. One notes a shelf under the chairs for bags and coats.
  7. In good weather the folding doors open and the front becomes half outdoors. Several writers describe eating beside a wide-open window as if they were outside, and one saw tables set out on the pavement. It depends on the season: a November visitor wrote that you could apparently eat outside on a good day, and that theirs was far too cold for it.

Parking

Posts saying you can park1 of 30 posts

Plenty of posts mention parking; exactly one writer parked. More than ten paste a line about free parking in front into their header block, and that line is copied. The only first-hand account says you pull up slightly onto the pavement right outside. And the accounts contradict each other: two say two or three cars fit out front, two others say the building's own car park has room to spare. One writer says outright that there is not much space and you should ring ahead — and took a taxi. If you are driving, call first.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 1
Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1

Not one writer says whether you can get in. Across all thirty posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, step, threshold and ramp never appear once. Several place the shop on the ground floor, but nobody says whether there is a step at the door. That is not a no; it is us not knowing. If it matters, a phone call is the sure way.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • One post, one line. It says to take tissue with you and that the toilet is on the building's second floor — the shop itself is on the ground floor. Whether it is separated by sex, whether there is an accessible stall, and whether you reach the second floor by stairs or a lift: nobody wrote any of it. One person's single sentence is all we have.
  • More than half the posts we read declare sponsorship, and the same sentences travel from one to the next. Usually it is a single line saying the goods and service were provided through a clip programme, or a lone #sponsored at the end. Fourteen of them close with the identical five hashtags, and one sentence about clean oil sealing in the juices appears word for word in nine. We did not drop them from the count — each records what was ordered and what was seen. But we did not treat the travelling sentences as evidence, and it is worth knowing that sixteen posts give no price at all. Almost everything we know about prices comes from one August 2025 post that copied out the whole board, plus a handful of writers noting what their own order cost.
  • The hours do not disagree: twenty-one posts all give eleven in the morning to midnight, every day, and every post that mentions a last order puts it at eleven at night. That holds across two years, from October 2024 to September 2026. Two posts state there is no regular closing day; the rest say nothing either way. Booking goes through Naver — one writer went through it and reports a minimum of two people, up to twenty-one handled directly, and larger groups needing the number entered by hand. They suggest phoning ahead for a big table. The big bone-in rib is sold in twos, not singly.
  • Nobody reports queueing. What writers do record is when it is quiet: late on a Saturday evening, midday at the weekend, and half past six on a Friday before the dinner rush. Against that, one found it full on a Friday night but for three or four tables, and another arrived at half five on a weekday to a near-empty room that filled completely on the stroke of six. No one says they waited — but it is fair to read that the tables go quickly once six o'clock passes.
