Mongtan

몽탄 Mongtan is named after Mongtan-myeon in Muan, South Jeolla, where meat was grilled over burning straw; the sign writes the name with the characters for 'dream' and 'charcoal'.

Compiled from 21 blog posts read in fullSources →

Mongtan grills marinated bone-in beef short rib (280g for 35,000 won, two-portion minimum) over burning straw, then staff finish it at your table, on the first and second floors of an old brick building at Baekbeom-ro 99-gil 50, near Samgakji Station. Two people pay 70,000 won for the minimum order of rib, and most add onion fried rice (5,000 won) and soybean stew (9,000 won). We read 30 posts from August 16 to October 15, 2026; 21 describe a meal there. We set aside 5 that only used Mongtan as a landmark and did not count 4 list posts.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect to wait. All 21 diners discussed it and 18 waited: 30 minutes (weekday noon, 15th in line), 30 minutes (Wednesday evening), 30 minutes (last day of the Chuseok holiday), about an hour (registered 2:37 pm on a weekday, seated 3:40), 1 hour 10 minutes (Sunday 4:30 pm, 35 groups ahead), 1 hour 15 minutes (weekend 3 pm, number 42), an hour and a half (6 pm, 34th), and two hours twice (Saturday 11:15 am, and the Hangul Day holiday at 11:21 am). Two posts barely waited, one walking in at 12:44 on a Tuesday. Registration opens at 11 am on the kiosk outside; the app only shows the queue, and five posts say the whole party must be present to be seated — two had to cancel and re-register because someone was late. Some posts found the day's list already closed at 4:50, 5:10 or 7:20 pm on weekends.
  2. Staff do the grilling. 18 of 21 diners say staff took the meat off the bone, grilled and cut it, and 13 describe it arriving on a grate already seared over straw. Finished pieces are stacked on the rib bones, and the gristly meat from the bone is saved and grilled at the end. Three posts were told to eat the first bite plain.
  3. Four posts say the short rib comes in two-portion minimums, and extra orders also come in pairs — one says you cannot add a single portion, so order three at the start if you want three. Two note the 280g includes the bone.
  4. One post copied the origin label: the beef is American and the pork Canadian, not Korean hanwoo. Only the beef tartare is listed as hanwoo.

Getting inside

Second floor7 of 21 posts

There is seating on two floors; 7 posts were taken upstairs. One describes mostly two- and three-person tables, four at most, with no large private room, so groups of five or more get split. Six posts mention watching the straw-fire searing behind glass on the ground floor.

No post mentions a basement; the seating described is on the first and second floors. Nobody says whether you reach the second floor by stairs or lift.

Nobody wrote about a step at the entrance, wheelchair or stroller access, or a lift to the second floor. That means no one mentioned it, not that there isn't one.

No post says where the toilet is or whether it is split by gender. We don't know.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-112 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Portions divide opinion: of seven posts that discussed them, 2 found them large, 2 not large, 1 undecided. Several note it looks small at first but the meat from the bone adds a lot.
  • On price, 3 posts called it expensive and 1 called it fair value. One notes two people spend at least 70,000 won; another paid 105,000 won for three portions. Prices were identical across August to October 2026.
  • One post says there are no reservations, neither through CatchTable nor by phone — only on-site kiosk registration. Six posts list the phone number 02-794-8592.
  • Twelve posts give the same hours, 12:00 to 22:00 daily, and seven a 21:00 last order, though most are copied info blocks. One post alone says the second floor runs 12:30 to 21:00 with last order at 20:00. No post names a closing day.
  • One post reads like promotional copy and repeats hearsay about the building, so we relied on it only where other posts agree. Claims that the building is a century-old Japanese-era house and that the straw comes from Mongtan-myeon are repeated hearsay and were not counted.
