장군산꼼장어 Live hagfish, baby octopus and shellfish grilled over charcoal at pavement tables outside Guro Digital Complex station
Korean · Guro-gu, Guro-dong
Data as of · Published ·
Janggun San-kkomjangeo is an open-air seafood tavern at the mouth of the eating alley right outside Guro Digital Complex station. It opens at four in the afternoon and runs to nearly one in the morning, closed Sundays — there is no lunch. Hagfish is in the name, but what people actually eat turns with the season: baby octopus in March and April, salt-grilled prawns in autumn, shellfish and oysters in winter. Whatever it is comes out of the tank alive, is cleaned in front of you and goes onto charcoal, and staff usually do the cooking. The thing writers talk about most is not the food but the tables that go out on the pavement. The posts we read run from October 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- The pavement is the restaurant. Twenty-two of the twenty-eight posts write about the outdoor tables and not one writes against them. One calls it the only place in the district where you can drink outdoors; four say it saves the trip out to the coast. The shape of it: red stools and round tables on the pavement out front, part of it roofed and part of it open, and in winter the gap between inside and out gets sheeted in plastic and heated. There are separate doors for the two halves. If it is cold you go in, and three writers say the air conditioning indoors is fierce in summer. The cost is that you are on a main road being looked at, and that the space in front is for parking — three writers note that when cars are there, the view is the back of a car. One was bitten badly by mosquitoes in early summer.
- You do not do the cooking. Thirteen writers record staff grilling for them; only two, both eating shellfish, did it themselves. Everything arrives alive, so the preparation is the restaurant's too: the octopus is separated, head into a foil dish of sesame oil; the hagfish goes on whole under a lid, then gets cut and turned; finished pieces are moved to the rim of the grill so they will not burn. Two writers describe staff trimming the abalone and talking a first-timer through it — a beginner need not worry, as one puts it. One was told the octopus is grilled by staff because it is hard to get right.
- It is right by the station — fourteen writers say so and none disagrees. Which exit, though, they cannot settle: four say exit 1, two exit 2, one exit 6, and several just say opposite the station. The distance runs from a hundred and forty-six metres, two minutes, out to five. For a landmark, two give the Daiso opposite and four the mouth of the eating alley; two say you can see the string lights from a long way off. One writer had driven, could not drink, and resolved to come by train next time.
- Four writers came back. One had eaten hagfish here four years earlier and returned for the prawns; one had had the clam hotpot and the octopus soup before and came back in octopus season; one ate prawns outside last autumn and octopus this spring; one arrived to find the octopus sold out, booked, and came again. All four returned in a different season for a different animal. Six more end their posts promising to come back for the hagfish — people who ate the shellfish or the prawns and are leaving the dish the place is named after for next time.
- It is an old place. One writer was told the family has run it since 1980; one calls it the fixture at the mouth of the alley; one notes it is not a chain. Two spotted a wall of celebrity autographs by the till, and both only noticed on the way out — was this famous all along? One saw a government hygiene certification displayed. None of this have we verified; all of it is either posted on the wall or repeated from the staff.

Parking
5 posts say you can park; 1 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

On parking the posts contradict each other flatly, and nothing here is settled. Four copy a 'no parking' line into their information block; the writers who looked at the front of the shop say otherwise. One: the website says no, but people were parking out front, though only a few fit. Another: she had planned for the municipal car park and was waved into a space at the door. A third lists four dedicated spaces, subject to change. Against them, one writer was told the spaces belong to the building's owners and customers should use the municipal car park. What can be said: there are very few spaces and it evidently depends on the night. That the parking and the outdoor tables occupy the same ground — so that cars mean fewer seats — every writer who mentions it agrees on.

Getting inside

Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair gets in — no step, no ramp, no width. This is the whole of what we know: it is at street level, the outdoor tables stand on the pavement, and one writer counts about eight tables inside. The things that cut the other way are worth setting down too: the toilet is not in the restaurant but in the building next door, and one writer puts it on that building's second floor. And because the outdoor seating and the parking share the same ground, a parked car changes the route through. None of this was measured by anyone who needed it to be, so anyone who does should ring and ask.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 29 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- There is no toilet inside. Four writers say so and none says otherwise, though they route you differently: out of the door and up to the second floor of the building next door; out and to the left; simply next door. One notes it is separated by sex and has both a Western and a squat pan. On whether it is clean they split three ways — fine, says one; not spotless but all right, says another; and one is blunter than we will translate. For hands there is a sink at the front of the shop, but one writer saw detergent standing next to the open seaweed flakes and rice paddle there and thought better of what she had just eaten. Not one post says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in, or whether there is a step.
- Quantity and price are where this place divides most sharply — four writers say there was plenty, five that there was not. It depends entirely on what they ordered. All four of the satisfied ones had the shellfish tray or a soup: the small tray is absurdly generous, says one; 'mini' is a strange word for this, says another. The five who went away hungry had octopus, hagfish, prawns or the pen-shell-and-scallop plate: four baby octopus did not fill her; ₩48,000 of hagfish for two was not much; the prawns came to maybe half a kilo; not much for the money. The verdicts on price run the same way — the five who call it fair were eating shellfish, the three who call it dear were eating octopus or scallops. One writer advises that three people need a side dish on top of one main.
- You do not queue here so much as miss out on a table outside. Eight posts raise the question; two waited and five did not, and four of those five explain themselves with a time — half past six, after nine, the moment it opened. Several converge on the same hour: at six on a Friday there were tables, and by twenty to seven there were one or two; another writer sat down at half six and watched the place fill. Of the two who did wait, one gave up on an outdoor table and went inside. As one writer puts it, if you do not want to wait, the indoor tables will seat you at once. The room, in other words, is usually empty and the pavement is not. One writer booked ahead.
- The service gets opposite verdicts, and the line between them is clear: it runs along the edge of the grill. Six writers call the staff kind, and what they mean is almost always the cooking and the trimming — the waiter who brought a roe-filled octopus over when a table complained of getting none; the one who slipped in an extra prawn or two near closing; the bowl of ice that arrived unasked for mixing soju and beer; the tables pushed further out onto the pavement when the outdoor ones ran out; the adductor muscle cut and handed over with a word that it could be eaten as it was. The two unhappy writers are both talking about getting someone's attention: five minutes to obtain a menu, calling twice to have the fire lit, long waits for gloves and water. One explains it herself — out on the pavement the staff are run off their feet and often not visible at all. Both writers note there is no call button.
- One post discloses that it was paid for; six state that they paid themselves. The sponsored one says so in its first line, and adds that most of the bill was still its own. Two posts we left out of the denominator. One lists six outdoor prawn places in Seoul and gives this one three lines — address, hours, price — with no sign of a visit, and gets the address wrong. The other is long, well written, and contains no record of eating here: not a single price, a vague reference to shellfish on some earlier visit, and a description of the complimentary side dishes as lettuce, garlic and soybean paste where thirteen other writers all describe pollack soup, quail eggs, chive salad and a garlic-oil dip. It reads as general knowledge about hagfish moved into this restaurant's name. Length and effort are not evidence of a visit.
- Prices and closing time have moved over these two years. Salt-grilled prawns went from ₩30,000 in October 2024 to ₩35,000–38,000 in August 2026; the seafood noodles from ₩6,000 to ₩7,000; the pen-shell-and-scallop plate from ₩45,000 to ₩46,000; hagfish for two from ₩48,000 to ₩50,000. The buttered prawn heads went the other way: free of charge in 2024, ₩3,000 extra in all three posts from 2026. Closing has shifted too — three posts from August and September 2026 give half past midnight rather than one. And one post from September 2026 says the place also shuts on Mondays, where another from the same month says Monday to Saturday. One account is not enough for us to publish it, but if you are going on a Monday, ring first. Ten posts give the same number, 0507-1360-1687.
- This is a drinking place, not a dining room, which is why most of what we count elsewhere is simply absent here. Not one post mentions wi-fi, a socket, a high chair, a changing table or anything for a child to do; nobody writes about bringing one. Only one mentions booking. What there is instead is company: five came with friends, one with colleagues after work, others in threes and fours. One table stayed more than five hours, and nobody mentions a time limit. Two writers note a large screen over the outdoor tables showing the baseball.
- Ground floor, on the street. The address gives the first floor of 571 Siheung-daero, and twenty-two writers either sat at or described the tables on the pavement outside — seating you reach straight off the footway, so the outdoor half at least is level with the street. Whether there is a step at the door into the room, or a stair anywhere, not one post says. Two note separate doors for inside and out; one describes the gap between them sheeted in plastic for winter. The toilet is in the building next door, and one writer places it on that building's second floor without saying how you get up there.
