KATAHDIN

카타딘 Katadin A one-room dessert cafe in a Bukchon lane with four tables, filter coffee and a banana pudding that is really a brownie

Data as of · Published ·

Katahdin is a small dessert café on the ground floor of a lane in Gahoe-dong, Bukchon, five to seven minutes' walk from Anguk station. There is no sign and the room is dark; one writer nearly walked past it. Four tables for two, eight seats at most, run by one person. The list is filter coffee, batch brew and half a dozen teas — no food beyond the pastry case. The desserts change daily and only the banana pudding is near-permanent — and five writers point out it is not the pudding you expect, but a dense chocolate brownie under cream. Using the room means one drink per person and ninety minutes. People come to read alone; one writer warns the place is too small and too quiet for catching up with a friend. The hours and closing days have changed several times, and several writers say to check the shop's Instagram before setting out. We read twenty-three posts, from April 2025 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. Ten writers call it small; none calls it roomy — and those who counted agree with each other: four say four tables for two, two say four seats in all, and one tallies three tables for two plus a bench for two, eight seats at the outside. Three conclude it is not a place for a group, and three use almost the same phrase — good if you come alone or as a pair. One finds the closeness of the tables suits a quiet conversation; another warns it is too small and too hushed to catch up with a friend. Two mention hooks on the wall for coats and bags, which is also to say there is nowhere at the table to put them.
  2. Eight writers describe waiting. There is no digital list: you write your name down and stand outside until you are called, by two accounts. One waited twenty minutes at noon on a weekend; one had a queue form behind her twenty minutes after she sat down; one found it full the moment it opened. Another writes that her friend had given up and gone home on every previous attempt. One waited off to the side rather than in front, because the shop-front is a single sheet of glass and standing there felt awkward. Three got a table straight away — and all three say they had assumed it would be full. On days when the shop hosts another roaster the wait is much longer: of two writers who went for the Ripen Coffee pop-up, one arrived an hour after opening, gave up on the sun-baked queue and took her coffee away, and the other never got in and left with only cookies.
  3. A seat costs one drink per person, and the table is yours for ninety minutes — three writers record the same two rules. Across the six posts that quote prices, drinks run ₩5,500–7,800 and the pastries ₩4,000–7,000. Two note ₩1,000 off a drink taken away. One copies out the shop's request for quiet conversation in such a small room; another says plenty of people come only to buy dessert to go.
  4. This is a place people come to by themselves. Three say so outright; one calls it a shrine for solo café-going that fills the minute it opens, another that it is good for reading or working alone. One brings a book or a diary every time, and describes the shop as one she has been to more times than she can count. One reader worked through Murakami here, one cried over a picture book, one read Camus. Power is not at every seat: one writer found a single socket, another none at the corner table but one by the middle table.
  5. One person runs it, and the menu shows it. Two writers note the single owner. The pastries shift from day to day with the line-up announced on Instagram stories, by two accounts; the same dessert arrives on a different plate each visit, says one; the flowers in the vase change with the season, says another — the same writer who records edible flowers set on the desserts. Clothes and bags are sold alongside the coffee, and two writers remark on the owner's eye. Two mention frequent pop-ups with other roasters and brands; two were there on the day of a Ripen Coffee pop-up, and one saw a poster from a collaboration with the ceramics studio Kkakji.

The most ordered dish is banana pudding (바나나 푸딩) — 8 of 20 posts.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

Parking

2 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot2 of 20 posts

It reads like a place you do not drive to, but all we have is two sentences. Two posts say parking is not possible; a third mentions a public car park but its writer did not drive. Nobody reports actually parking. Five walked from Anguk station instead, and put it at five to seven minutes — 342 metres, by one count.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 3 (of 20 posts read)

Nobody describes the way in. The address says ground floor and several writers place it on a lane, but not one of the twenty-three says whether there is a step at the door or stairs to climb. Two nearly walked past it — no sign, dark inside — so all we can say for certain is that it takes finding.

No one says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair could get in. Several writers note that there are only eight seats and that the tables sit close together, but nobody has looked at whether there is room to pass between them. We can claim neither that it is accessible nor that it is not.

There is no toilet in the shop. Three writers say so and two give directions: use the public one in the Gahoe-dong community centre, left out of the lane. Bukchon being what it is, that one can be busy — another writer gave up on it because of the crowd, and was quietly redirected by a guide to the Baek In-je House nearby.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 22 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • There is no single set of opening hours to give. The twelve posts that record them disagree by date: from January to March 2026, closed Tuesdays, until 20:00 Wednesday to Saturday, 19:00 Sunday, 18:00 Monday; in April, closed Thursdays, 12:00–19:00; from July to September, closed Monday and Tuesday, 18:00 on Wednesday and Sunday and 20:00 Thursday to Saturday. Which of these holds now, we have not checked. Five writers say to read the shop's Instagram notice before going, and two copy out its warning that it closes early when the day's pastries run out. Not one post mentions a mid-afternoon break or a last order.
  • No post gives a telephone number. None of the twenty-three; instead eight of them give the shop's Instagram handle, @shop.katahdin, which is where closures and the day's pastries are posted. Nor is there any question of booking a table: the single mention of a reservation is for whole cakes and a larger banana pudding, ordered through a Google form on Instagram — nobody says a seat can be held, and the queue is a handwritten list at the door. So we cannot tell you how to ring ahead and ask whether it is open.
  • Not one writer discloses being given anything (one says explicitly that she paid). Two of the twenty-six posts, though, are not visits and are out of the count: one is a straight copy of the shop's map listing, the other is written to a template of pros, cons and frequently asked questions. The second claims the shop opens at 10am — no other post has it opening before noon — and reassures readers about a nearby public car park, which contradicts the two writers who say parking is not possible. It names no drink, no dessert and no price. Eight further posts are monthly diaries covering many places, so only the Katahdin passage was read and counted — and one of those was dropped entirely, having a check-in but not a single line about the shop.
