Daehwajeong Jinjja Haejangguk

대화정 진짜해장국 Jinjja haejangguk means 'the real hangover soup' — one post notes that Daehwajeong was the original shop name and 'Jinjja Haejangguk' started as the name of the dish.

Compiled from 17 blog posts read in fullSources →

Daehwajeong Jinjja Haejangguk is a hangover-soup house at the far end of an alley at Jangchungdan-ro 249-20, near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station. There are three things to order: the regular soup with brisket, cabbage greens and blood curd; the large version with beef bones; and domestic pork belly (200 g), available only after 5 pm. Since 1 September 2026 they cost 12,000, 17,000 and 19,000 won; before that, 11,000, 15,000 and 18,000. The broth is doenjang-based and not spicy, and several posts describe a tray of scallions, chili and red paste that is set down and then moved on to the next table. We read 30 posts from 9 July to 16 October 2026; 21 describe an actual visit. One was about a different Jinjja Haejangguk in Paju and was dropped, and eight are introductions or listicles we did not count.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect to wait. Eight posts say they queued or saw a queue. One says weekday lunch is nearly impossible and that even on weekends it is full before 11; another sat on the waiting chairs before the afternoon break ended and watched several groups line up behind them within ten minutes. Three posts mention chairs outside for waiting, one counting about five. The two posts that came at a late lunch and at 7:30 pm walked straight in. One post says there are no number tickets — the owner calls people in one by one.
  2. The room is small. Four posts call it not spacious or snug, and one counts about twelve four-person tables. One notes the tables are packed tight so it still seats a fair crowd; another says it isn't cramped.
  3. Three posts say the broth is not spicy. Of the two posts that came with children, one says the child ate rice in the soup down to the last of the broth. Add the red paste and chili if you want heat.
  4. Four posts say there was no off smell — about the beef bones, the blood curd, the brisket and the frozen pork belly respectively.

  1. Six posts come from repeat customers: one goes about once a quarter, one sometimes takes the large soup home in the evening, one finally ordered the pork belly after years of only soup. A regular who has lost count says the soup is not as good as it first seemed and has got much more expensive.
  2. Two posts say in their own words that each person must order a dish; a few others repeat it in their info boxes.

Parking

2 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot2 of 17 posts

There is no parking of its own. Of three posts that drove, two used nearby public or paid lots (the street lot by the National Medical Center was 3,000 won an hour), and one says it parked briefly nearby. The 'no parking' lines in many posts are copied info.

Getting inside

No one described the floor. The address says ground floor, but no post mentions steps up or down on the way in. We don't know.

No post says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in, including the two that came with children. That means no one wrote about it, not that it's impossible.

We don't know about the toilet. One post's info box says it is inside and shared by men and women, but that is copied info, so we did not count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 8 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices went up on 1 September 2026. A post from 15 August lists 11,000 won regular, 15,000 large and 18,000 for 200 g of pork belly; posts from September on give 12,000, 17,000 and 19,000. For a sense of a full meal, two people paid 65,000 won for three portions of pork belly and one regular soup. Two posts call it pricey, and one says it isn't cheap but was worth it. An October post's '4,000 won for two pieces of bone' reflects the old price gap.
  • Two posts that came by subway say to take exit 14 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station and walk to the end of the alley by the emart24. It is tucked away — one couple circled several times before finding it.
  • Opening hours appear only in info boxes. Six posts give the same: daily 5:00 am to 11:50 pm, break 2–5 pm, last order 11:10 pm. One, citing a photo of the shop's notice, gives the break as 3–5 pm with a 2:20 pm last order; another lists 5:00–14:00 and 17:30–23:50. Firsthand, one couple arrived just before 5 pm and waited out the break, and one family turned up late at night to find it closed. Pork belly is served from 5 pm.
  • One post says you cannot book, and so doesn't recommend it for a pork-belly work dinner. Seven posts give the phone number as 0507-1348-8485; one gives 02-2267-8484.
  • One post found the staff unfriendly on an evening visit; none of the posts we counted call them friendly. One post got extra blood curd and greens after an order mix-up, and another asked for no blood curd and got it anyway.
  • Some posts were left out. Two from the same blogger summarize a video and public listings and say outright they never went. One reposts a 2021 listicle with an address on Jong-ro and an 8,000-won soup, which doesn't match today. And one claims a meal but describes tripe, bean sprouts and perilla powder that no other post mentions, so we didn't count it as a visit.
