Daori Sikdang
다오리식당 A plain-meals house in the lanes behind Bangsan market — no duck despite the name, but a ₩11,000 bossam set that has not moved all year
Data as of · Published ·
Daori Sikdang is a plain-meals restaurant two or three minutes' walk from exit 6 at Euljiro 4-ga, in the lanes behind Bangsan market. The register has it as Daori; the sign and the customers say Daori Sikdang. Despite the name — ori means duck — there is no duck. What there is, is bossam. Sixteen of the twenty-five writers ordered the ₩11,000 bossam set: boiled pork with its own kimchi, dressed chives, leaves, soup, rice, five or six side dishes, and a steamed egg that is on no menu. A larger party takes one of the sharing platters at the top of the board. A fish-grilling station stands by the front door, and some people come only for the mackerel. The surrounding streets are printers and paper merchants, and most of the room works nearby. Ten in the morning to ten at night, Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays. There is no parking. The posts we read run from December 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- A steamed egg arrives that is on no menu. Nine writers record it, several with surprise: "not listed, but they bring it", "I hadn't expected it — apparently it comes with the set, which makes the price look better still", "they are generous here." Two got a fried egg instead, so it seems to vary by day. A September 2026 party, ordering a second platter of pork, sheepishly asked for more egg and had it brought at once. The lettuce and leaves are free too — one writer compares a bossam place in Chungmuro that charges for them. So is the hand towel, which four writers stop to describe: heavy cotton rather than a wet wipe, "washed and boiled and rolled by hand — I have never been given one like it", and, from another, roughly the size of a phone and big enough, unfolded, to dry a whole person.
- The prices do not move. ₩11,000 for the bossam set appears in ten posts between January and September 2026, the ssambap set matches it, the grilled fish is ₩10,000 and the larger set ₩17,000. Thirteen writers call it cheap; one calls something dear, and that one means the ₩17,000 set — "a bit much, though you do get the fish and the egg." Two do arithmetic: a March 2026 writer sets it against the bossam lunches near his own office at ₩14,000, ₩15,000 and ₩12,000; and a January 2026 writer, back after a decade, notes "₩7,000 ten years ago — they've put it up four thousand in ten years", before concluding that inside the old city walls, at today's prices, this place is something to hold on to.
- Small from the lane, roomy inside — which is why the posts disagree. The two who call it small are both describing what they saw from outside. The five who went in say the opposite: "the door looks narrow but there is a lot more room than you expect", "forty or fifty people would fit", "more than ten tables of four", "a large room, and full". There is a floor-seating room at the back where you take your shoes off — a March 2026 writer was shown into it when the main room was full, and an August 2026 one had heard of it.
- They post the provenance, and five writers looked at it. "A notice saying the meat, the rice and the vegetables are all Korean." "Both the pork and the leaves were domestic." "All Korean produce — and at the lunch-set places I go to, the bossam pork almost never is." "The shoulder is marked Korean." "Korean Hipork, by the look of the label." It always comes attached to the price — "all of it Korean and still ₩11,000", "Korean pork and proper bossam kimchi for eleven thousand". Five say there is no off taste in the meat, and nobody says otherwise.
- Writers disagree about what is made to order, and the split runs by dish. Two watched the fish go on: "the owner grills it the moment you ask", "they do it at the station marked for it." But a March 2026 writer walked in and found a stack of fish already grilled — part-cooked ahead, they assumed. The sets come fast: a June 2026 writer notes everything arrived within a minute or two, and put it down to the kitchen keeping the popular dishes ready. An August 2026 writer, comparing two cuts on one plate, found the shoulder had cooled while the belly came hot. We cannot settle it.
- Eight writers call the portions generous; one does not. "So full it made me happy." "Plenty of meat, and the leaves on top of it." "A lot of it, and soft." "A table heaped." "Twenty thousand won for five side dishes, the pork, the mackerel, rice, soup and leaves — that is not a small amount of work." A parent in September 2026 goes further: the side dishes, the soup and the rice would have been a meal on their own. The dissenter is from July 2026: the kimchi is good and the pork is good, but there was not much of it — "I'd rather they charged more and gave more." Another writer the same month calls the pork about right and the kimchi generous enough to want extra rice for.
- An older man and one person on the floor run it between them. Four writers describe them and nobody complains. A July 2026 writer: "the owner is an old man who darts about serving and taking the money and is kind with it." A January 2026 one admires the teamwork between him and the woman working the room. A September 2026 writer, watching the Saturday lunch rush build, notes he stayed courteous to the end of it. A June 2026 writer had the side dishes topped up without asking, because someone came and asked her first. Eating alone is fine — the January writer, alone, found nobody minded: "though you might want to avoid the peak." A September writer says the same.
- Two or three minutes on foot from Euljiro 4-ga, down a lane. Eight writers give directions and they do not agree on the exit: four say exit 6 ("two minutes", "about 150m", "three to five minutes", "the lane just along from it"), one says exit 5, and one gives only the distance, 200m. What kind of lane it is turns out to be half the story — "no other restaurants, no bars, nothing but printers and publishers"; "half the tables full at six, and not a tourist among them — everybody works round here"; "there's a bright strip of restaurants a short walk the other way, and they come here instead." A December 2025 writer likes it precisely because the fashionable version of Euljiro has not reached this block. There is no parking — three writers say so flatly.
- Two writers were startled to find foreign customers here. A September 2026 one: "Japanese diners, several of them — how on earth do you find a place down a lane like this?" Another the same month, in the evening, wondered the same and concluded that a lot more people must be coming to the country now. Three writers mention the menu painted large on the wall; none says whether any of it is in another language.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | yes 0 · no 1 (of 22 posts read) |
|---|
Not one post says whether you can get in. Across all twenty-eight, the words for wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, threshold and step never appear. "Lift" appears once — it is the writer's own office lift. One post says the restaurant is on the ground floor and two describe the raised floor-seating room at the back, but whether the entrance is level, and what the lane is like underfoot, nobody looked. This is not a no — it is a gap.
Exactly one post mentions the toilet, and not kindly. A May 2026 monthly diary ends its paragraph on this restaurant with: "one thing — I'd skip the toilet. I didn't go myself, but my sister says it's filthy." That is second-hand, from a companion, and it is the whole of it. Whether it is inside or out in the building, whether it is separate for men and women — the word does not appear in any of the other twenty-four posts. We cannot say more than one person's report of somebody else's.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 25 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Why twenty-five. Twenty-eight posts came back and only three were struck — the cleanest denominator of anything we read this round. The three: a post by one of our own writers about a Starbucks and an arcade in a different market, where we appear only as a link card at the end; a thirty-restaurant round-up of one blogger's year, where we are the fifth line and a link to their own review; and one machine-assembled year-end-party piece. That last is a checklist — "✔ not too loud ✔ the food is definitely good" — which puts us at "the Euljiro area" and gives not one price and not one dish by name. It declares oyster bossam our signature; across the other twenty-five posts, oysters appear in exactly two lines — that they seem to sell them in winter, and that one writer means to get enough people together to order some. Nobody has eaten it.
- Whether it is open on Saturday evening, the posts do not agree. Eight give hours and all eight say ten to ten, closed Sundays — but one of them adds that Saturday ends at three (August 2026). That writer, arriving for a late Saturday lunch, "just got a seat before they shut." Another, there at Saturday noon in July 2026, hedges the same way: "Sunday is definitely closed; Saturday they're open at lunch, but I don't know about the evening." A third, at noon on a Saturday in September 2026, writes only "Mon–Sat, ten to ten". With one post saying it, it is not in the hours above — ring first if you want a Saturday dinner.
- Whether there is an afternoon break is disputed too. A March 2026 writer made a field for it and wrote "Break time: none." But an August 2026 writer arrived before dinner to find the door shut, waited it out in a café nearby, and came back for the pork set — joking about the "breakdancing time" that had defeated her. A May 2026 writer records that arriving between one and two, theirs was the last order taken, and the thought of missing lunch was alarming. Each of these is a single post, so none of them is in the hours. Ring ahead if you are coming in the afternoon.
- It does not look like a queueing place, but the room fills. Only one writer describes waiting — at about one on a January afternoon, "a bit of a line, but they turn tables fast and we weren't long" — and that writer suggests avoiding the peak anyway. The rest record how quickly it fills: nearly full by ten to twelve; heaving after one; "suddenly full as lunchtime came round"; "we were the first in and it was almost full by the time we finished"; "no table, so they put us in the back room"; half the tables taken at six in the evening. One writer, there at noon on a Saturday, found plenty of space. Nobody describes a waiting list or how you put your name down.
- The name has nothing to do with duck, and nobody has confirmed where it comes from. Four writers stop to say so — "no duck; belly pork and bossam"; "not a duck house at all but a bossam and plain-meals place"; "the name has nothing whatever to do with it (not duck — be warned)"; and one whose headline explains that the *ori* is not the bird but the verb: *da ori*, everyone come. That last is the one explanation on record, and it is hearsay — a March 2026 writer reports being told the name means *may all the customers come to our restaurant*, without saying who told her. Nobody asked the owner. The same goes for the menu names seonggun and janggun: one writer guesses at the Chinese characters for *sagely king* and *general*, and says plainly that he is guessing.
- No post declares a sponsorship. The word appears once in twenty-eight posts, in a writer's opening joke that she has come back to blogging "with the impure motive of wanting free meals out of it too" — not a statement about this restaurant. Five writers say they paid their own way and two of them post the receipt. One says somebody else did: "I don't usually come this far on a weeknight, but he offered to buy." The other nineteen say nothing about money, and saying nothing is not the same as not being paid.
