Yonggwang Jjukkumi

용광쭈꾸미 을지로본점 A stir-fried baby octopus house right outside Euljiro 3-ga station, with three heat levels and a crisp shredded-potato pancake.

Korean · Jung-gu, Euljiro 3-ga

Data as of · Published ·

Yonggwang Jjukkumi's Euljiro branch stands seventeen metres from exit 9 at Euljiro 3-ga, at the mouth of the lane on your right. Baby octopus in a hot red sauce, stir-fried on a big iron plate under a heap of water dropwort, with rice cake, mushroom and bean sprouts in it. You pick one of three heat levels, and you can have pork belly or chicken fried in with it. Almost everyone orders the set, which adds a wide, crisp pancake of shredded potato and one side — fried rice, rice balls or a packet of instant fire noodles. Staff come over at the end and fry the rice on your plate. Weekdays it opens at eleven; Saturday and Sunday it does not open until four in the afternoon. At lunch there is a separate ₩10,000 set. The posts we read run from December 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. How hot level one is depends entirely on who you ask. The menu calls level one "about Shin Ramyun," level two "about Buldak," and level three simply "warning — we respect your decision." Six writers took the menu at its word and found level one manageable even though they say they cannot take heat. Six others, on the same level one, say it is hotter than Shin Ramyun — one puts it at Yeolramyun and adds that Shin Ramyun has got milder over the years, so most restaurants that claim that benchmark are not hot at all and this one is. An office worker of three years' standing in the neighbourhood calls even the lunch set plenty hot. These are people's own tongues, not a copied line, so we counted both sides. If you are unsure, start at one and order at least one of the tartare sauce, the konjac noodle salad or the potato pancake — more than ten writers used one of those to take the edge off.
  2. How the octopus arrives has changed. A writer who went in December 2025 states flatly that it comes raw in its sauce, and goes out of her way to contrast that with other octopus places that bring it part-cooked. Someone who went in March 2026 also sat waiting for it to cook. All nine who went from August 2026 onwards say it arrives part-grilled — "they told us it had been seared once and needed about two more minutes," "it comes about ninety per cent cooked," "they turn the flame on and tell you to wait one minute." These are not competing accounts; the kitchen changed in between. You no longer sit and wait.
  3. A member of staff comes and fries the rice for you at the end. They tell you in advance not to cook the sauce down completely, then chop the leftover octopus into it, fry it with the rice, scatter flying-fish roe over and fry it again. "Grains loose, not claggy — you can tell it's someone who does it all day," as one puts it, and another notes that at most places the rice ends up short of sauce and here it did not. More than twenty writers bring it up and not one is disappointed. One advises ordering two if there are three of you.
  4. There is a queue in the evening. One writer waited thirty to forty minutes at seven on a Sunday; another stood behind four groups for half an hour; one walked in before six and watched the room fill by half past; one came out to find eight groups waiting outside. The queue runs through the Catch Table app, with a kiosk and a row of chairs by the door. Book on Naver and you walk straight in — four writers did. But two note that Naver bookings only run until six in the evening, and one found no slots at all when she tried on the day.
  5. You order from a tablet at the table and pay there and then — seven writers describe it. Choosing a set walks you through the heat level, the side (fried rice, rice balls, fire noodles or the carbonara version) and which potato pancake you want, and swapping the pancake adds ₩1,000–2,000. Nine writers followed the "how to eat this" card printed on the wall and on the tablet: a perilla leaf, then pickled radish, bean sprouts and the konjac salad, then a piece of octopus dipped in tartare sauce on top.
  6. Your bag and coat go inside the chair. The seats at the round tables lift open, which keeps the sauce smell out of your clothes. Aprons hang on the wall for you to take, or staff bring one over. Six writers inventory what is laid out by the till: deodorising spray, toothpicks, sweets, gum, mouthwash, hair ties — and lens cleaner. Two of them single that out; anyone who wears glasses leaves a grill house with oil spattered on the lenses. One warning from a third: she caught her finger in the chair lid.
  7. Enough foreign customers to be remarked on. "I sat down and everyone around us was foreign," says one; another counts foreign visitors alongside the office crowd. It is directly outside Euljiro 3-ga station, under a large sign claiming one of Seoul's three great octopus houses. One of the posts we read is by a Japanese blogger living in Seoul, whose pick of the meal was the konjac noodle salad.

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 25 posts read)

Ground floor, at the mouth of the lane on your right as you leave exit 9 at Euljiro 3-ga. Three posts give the distance as seventeen metres, two as a thirty-second walk, one as ten seconds — "literally outside the station." Whether there is another floor, nobody says; all twenty-five sat in the ground-floor room. One post puts the maximum group at forty-five, another at twenty.

Nobody wrote about the doorway, a ramp, or the width of the aisles. Seventeen posts say it is on the ground floor seventeen metres from the station exit, but that is not the same as saying a wheelchair gets in. Not one says whether there is a lip at the door, or whether there is room between the round iron-plate tables. There is one hint: a writer copying the shop's own notes records that the space outside is kept for elderly and disabled customers. That tells you the thought has occurred to them; it does not tell you what happens once you are through the door. This is not a yes and not a no; we do not know.

Exactly one person mentions the toilet, and only to say it is "right there in the building," which means in the building rather than in the restaurant. How many stalls, whether it is separated by sex, whether it is locked, whether there is a step on the way — nobody says. One writer, incidentally, uses a format that rates every restaurant's toilet; he fills it in for the two other places in that post and leaves this one as "toilet...?"

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-08-252 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • We dropped five of the thirty. Two were weekly diaries covering several restaurants, in which this one gets a line or two. One reproduced the Naver listing's review statistics — "3,734 reviews," "average rating 0" — and pasted in other people's reviews. The remaining two were written for a fee, which both state at the top, and that is to their credit. But across nearly two thousand characters neither gives a price, a number of portions, a time, a party size or a single thing that disappointed them; they circle "chewy," "savoury," "I kept reaching for more." They went up minutes apart on the same day with consecutive post numbers. Length and care are not evidence of having been there. Of the twenty-five we kept, two disclose sponsorship and nine state they paid. Eighteen are clustered between late August and late September 2026, but the prices, orders and companions differ enough that they do not read as one supplied script.
  • One writer says it is loud: "as it filled up the sound started bouncing around the room, and we had to raise our voices a little." She had arrived at six on a Thursday and watched the place fill. The other twenty-four say nothing about noise at all. Several call it a good room for talking and note the space between tables, but that is about spacing, not sound. If quiet matters to you, know that one person is the whole of the evidence.
  • At weekends it does not open until four in the afternoon. On weekdays it runs eleven to eleven (midnight on Friday) with a break from half past two to half past four — but Saturday and Sunday start at four. Three posts note there is no afternoon break at weekends. Saturday closes at one in the morning, Sunday at midnight, and two posts say there is no regular closing day. Three figures disagree with the rest: one post alone gives 11:30 for the weekday opening; three give eleven at night for Friday against nine that give midnight; one has Sunday running to one in the morning against nine that say midnight. The afternoon break will send you away, so if you are coming at the end of lunch, be in before half past two.
  • The octopus starts at two portions — you cannot eat it alone. The menu says so and three writers copied it down. On your own, the answer is the ₩10,000 lunch set, but only one person we read has eaten it — an office worker from nearby — so his account is all we have. Lunch and dinner are close to different restaurants here: at midday there are set meals, rice bowls, grilled pork ribs and an old-fashioned tonkatsu, and the same set costs ₩3,000 less. In the evening it is closer to a drinking house; one writer came as a second stop of the night.
