Pungnam Golbaengi
풍남골뱅이 A 1975 whelk house in the Euljiro golbaengi alley, where one dish buys you a rolled omelette and a pot of broth for nothing
Korean · Jung-gu, Euljiro 3-ga
Data as of · Published ·
Pungnam Golbaengi is an old drinking house in the whelk alley just behind exit 11 at Euljiro 3-ga. The door says 1975; it carries the government's hundred-year-shop plaque and has been on Paik Jong-won's television programme. In practice it sells one thing: whelks dressed with chilli under a heap of shredded spring onion, with dried fish tossed through, on a wide plate. There is no rice. It opens at three in the afternoon and closes on Sundays. One writer traces it to a corner shop selling tinned whelks and soju to the printers who worked these lanes. The posts we read run from 4 February to 27 September 2026 — though one of them is about a visit in November 2017.

What sets it apart
- Order the whelks and a rolled omelette, a pot of fish-cake broth and a bowl of dry peanuts arrive without charge — and the omelette and the broth keep coming. Twenty-five posts say so, which makes it the surest thing we know about this place. The board prices the omelette at ₩10,000 and it comes anyway: one writer had assumed you must buy it to earn the refills, and two report the owner asking, as the plate emptied, whether they would like another. Three took three or four. Any sum you do on the ₩31,000 whelks is wrong without this — as one writer works it out, three thousand-odd is steep until the broth and the omelette land, and split four ways it is cheap. Some come for the omelette rather than the whelks: one post says exactly that, in its title.
- If you have to wait, you write your name on a piece of paper, not into an app. Four posts describe the sheet hanging on the door — name and number, then wait to be called; one writer puts it as scribbling on an indifferent scrap and standing quietly. Another wrote hers down and went for a walk. How long depends entirely on when you come: half an hour behind four groups on a weekday evening in one account; a room already filling at three in the afternoon in another; only a few tables free at four on a Saturday in a third. Six walked straight in at an odd hour — and two of those add that a queue formed behind them soon after. Two note that the tables turn over quickly.
- The praise and the shrug sit side by side. Nine writers are struck by the size of the whelks; four are not carried away — not bad but not remarkable; not really different from the others; a standard version of the dish; and one who found the dressing thick and dulling rather than sharp and clearing. The sharpest account is the one written about 2017, whose author says of the alley as a whole that the food is much the same everywhere, so pick whichever place has a free table or a kind-looking owner, and puts the crowd here down to television. Even he concedes that the onion, the noodles and the omelette are of another order than an ordinary bar's.

There is no parking. Four posts say so and none disagrees: come on foot; find a public car park nearby; no booking and no parking. Not one names which car park they used. This is mostly somewhere people walk to for the second round — eight came on from somewhere else, and four place it a few steps from exit 11 at Euljiro 3-ga. One post puts it at exit 11 of Euljiro 1-ga, which is the wrong station.

Getting there

Getting inside
No post says which floor it is on. No stairs, no basement, no upstairs. What they give you to recognise it by is the line about 1975 at the door, the hundred-year-shop plaque, and the fact that Yeongnak Golbaengi is right next to it — the lane is packed with whelk houses, so check the sign. One writer found the alley empty except for a single heaving room, looked up at the name, and that was this one.
Not one post mentions a step, a ramp or a wheelchair. Whether there is a lip at the door, how wide it is — none of the twenty-seven say. What they describe is the seating, and even there they part: deep inside and plenty of tables, roomy, comfortably spaced, say some; ordinary in size with the tables close and every word from the next one audible, say others. Nobody describes the gap between them. One notes a large party seated across several tables pushed together.
Nobody writes about the toilet. Inside or out, shared or separate — not a line in twenty-seven posts. For a place that pours until eleven at night, and where several writers account for two or three bottles of soju, it is a fair question, and it goes unasked. That is not "there is none"; it is nobody looked.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 27 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- The posts contradict each other flatly on whether the whelks come out of a tin — and the contradiction is nine years wide. The 2026 accounts insist they are nothing like tinned, big enough to cut, not the small ones you get elsewhere. But one post, written in August 2026 about a visit in November 2017, says the kitchen does not boil anything: it opens a tin and dresses it, and he cannot see why the place is so full. Same shop, nine years apart. Whether the shop changed or the eyes differ we have not been able to establish. We could only spot it because that writer put the date in his title; the other twenty-six posts are all from 2026.
- The registered name is just 풍남, two syllables. The sign, the map entry and all twenty-seven posts call it 풍남골뱅이, and one adds "the original". We use the name people say. The phone number is 02-2265-2336, agreed by three posts and by the registry. Six posts give 1975 as the founding year and none disagrees; one calls the place fifty years old and another says it is in its third generation, and we have confirmed neither.
- There is no rice — this is a second-round place. Ten posts say so in as many words, and one, comparing it with the shop next door, notes that there are no rice balls here, which makes it awkward with a child. The only way to fill up is the noodles, which five writers call compulsory. One party came on an empty stomach and regretted it — the onion was sharp enough to leave them sore, which they concede was their own fault. And it is loud: seven posts reach for words like raucous, so if you want a quiet table this is not it.
- Two posts say the shop hands out cigarettes. One reports being told they are kept for customers who have run out or left theirs behind — Japanese and Chinese packs among them; the other only photographed the pile by the till because it surprised her. Neither says anyone smokes indoors — whether there is anywhere to, or whether people step outside, nobody writes down. Nor do we know whether it is still true.
