화육계 Charcoal-fired chilli chicken feet in the Euljiro print alleys

Data as of · Published ·

A few minutes' walk from Euljiro 3-ga station, two floors of an old building in the printing-shop alleys, serving chilli-marinated chicken feet. The feet and the pork trotter are part-cooked in the kitchen and brought out on their own charcoal brazier, and you choose one of three heat levels. Since the place appeared on the YouTube show Pungja's Repeat Visit, the alley outside fills up most evenings.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. You do not grill here; it arrives grilled. The marinated feet and trotter come out of the kitchen already cooked, and the brazier on the table is there to keep them warm rather than to finish them. That means you can start eating the moment you sit down — but it also means the brazier is noticeable when it fails. One writer found both coals pushed to one side and the heat uneven; another got a stack of feet that never touched the fire and ate them lukewarm.
  2. You pick heat 1, 2 or 3, and people disagree about the same number. The house calibrates them against instant noodles: level 1 like Shin Ramyun, level 2 like Yeul Ramyun, level 3 like Buldak. One writer says level 2 suits someone who can't finish mild tteokbokki; another says it clearly outruns the ramyeon it is named after; one ordered level 1 and gave up halfway. A writer who wanted two different levels on one table was told both dishes have to share a setting.
  3. The queue is a matter of timing. People who turned up when the doors opened on a weekday, or on a Sunday evening, walked straight in; people who came on a Friday or Saturday night describe an alley you could barely walk down. You put your number into a terminal outside and get a KakaoTalk message, so you can wander — though one writer saw a notice giving you three minutes to appear once called, which argues for staying close. In winter there are chairs and a heater by the door.
  4. What divides people here is not the food but the expectation. Several writers came because of the television and the queue, and left saying it was not bad but not what they had been promised — the words ordinary, fine, so-so recur. The ones who came for smoke rather than sauce left satisfied. People looking for a sweet, thick marinade and people looking for charcoal walk out with different answers.
  5. You order by QR code at the table. Staff will take an order if you flag them, but the code is the default, and anything outside the standard setting — ketchup, mayonnaise — has to be asked for. One writer notes that Visa, Mastercard and cash work but Alipay and WeChat Pay do not, which is worth knowing in a room with this many foreign customers.
  6. Write a receipt review and you get a bottle. Scan the QR taped to a pillar, post the review, show it to a server, and you choose between soju, beer and a soft drink — several writers took the beer and knocked it off the bill.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is mubbyeo dakbal (무뼈닭발) — 21 of 25 posts.

Parking

1 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 25 posts

This is not a place to drive to. There is no lot and the alley is narrow, and exactly one of these twenty-seven writers arrived by car: they found the public garages nearby expensive and settled for a hotel car park as the cheapest option. Everyone else simply repeats the words "no parking" without saying where you might actually leave a car.

Getting inside

Second floor9 of 25 posts
Toilet inside1 of 25 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 25 posts read)

You do not choose your floor. Both are open dining rooms and you get sent up when the ground floor fills; those who ate upstairs describe plenty of space, those downstairs describe tables close together. Whether large parties are put on a particular floor, or whether the braziers work the same on both, nobody says.

Nobody writes about a step or a stair. No post says whether there is a lip at the entrance, or whether a wheelchair or pushchair can get in. Plenty of writers were sent upstairs and none of them says whether stairs are the only way — the closest anyone comes is "take the staircase at the side."

One writer mentions the toilet at all: it is on the second floor and it is unisex. How many cubicles, whether you have to climb a flight from the ground-floor tables, what it is like inside — nobody says.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The subway directions agree; the distance does not. Everyone sends you to exit 9 of Euljiro 3-ga station, then variously calls it a one-minute walk, 82 metres, two to three minutes, or — from one writer who timed it — three minutes and "one minute is pushing it." It sits back inside the alley, so there is a turn involved.
  • One writer reports a two-hour limit on the table when there is a queue, and a one-dish-per-person rule in the same breath. Neither appears in any of the other twenty-six posts. We do not know when either started or whether they still hold.
  • Seven of these posts are monthly diaries. Hwayukgye gets a line or two in each — no price, no heat level, no description of the room — and two of them do not even say what was ordered. Almost everything on this page comes from the other twenty.
  • It is not a room for a quiet conversation. Three writers describe a young crowd, tables close together and a lot of noise. One of them liked it that way; one of them did not.
  • One writer found the room too hot in summer and could not tell whether the air conditioning was off or the braziers were simply winning. Several people praise the big extraction hoods over each table for keeping the smoke down, but on the heat there is only that one voice.
