Eulji-odeng
을지오뎅 Eulji comes from Euljiro, the street it stands on; odeng is the Korean name for oden, the fishcake stew kept simmering in the middle of the room.

Euljiodeng is an oden bar forty metres from exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga station, at the head of the whelk-restaurant lane. A hot pot of fishcake sits in the middle and customers ring it; you lift out your own skewers and pay at the end by the count. But the sign is not really about oden — it is about roe sandfish: four roe-packed fish, grilled whole, ₩19,000 (one writer says ₩17,000). The menu runs to six things; the others are braised sandfish, grilled shishamo, spiced dried pollack and boiled squid. To drink there is Baekhwasubok sake, hot or cold, and a version steeped with toasted pufferfish fin. It is small, there is a queue, and once you sit you have two hours. Opens at three in the afternoon, two at weekends, and closes at midnight. We read posts from February to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.
These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours
What sets it apart
- The house has three rules, and writers put them at the top of their posts. First, you cannot order only oden — four writers note that a main dish must come first before you may touch the pot. Second, one main per two people, say two others. Third, your table is yours for two hours, and only one hour if four or more of you take the single four-top; eight writers mention this. One warns that the clock is kept strictly; another finds it "more restrictions than you'd expect — not for everyone". A fourth sums up the notices taped to the wall: oden is self-serve, you are charged by the skewer, and tables turn fast.
- You queue on the red plastic stools outside. No apps, no waiting list — three writers spell out that you simply sit down in the order you arrive, and two note that you cannot book. Of the twenty who address it, twelve waited and seven did not. The waits reported are ten, fifteen, thirty, and thirty to forty minutes. The clock is fairly legible. Those who walked straight in came on a weekday around knocking-off time, at four on a Saturday afternoon, at half past seven, or early on a weekend afternoon. Those who waited came at seven on a Saturday (thirty minutes), seven on a Wednesday (fifteen), half past seven on a weekday — and half past ten at night on a weekend, still ten minutes. One writer expected the queue to be gone after ten and saw people waiting anyway; another says she has never seen a day without one. Three writers only got in after repeated failed attempts; one finally succeeded by turning up at three in the afternoon. Smaller parties get in faster — one group of three watched a pair behind them go in first.
- Fifteen posts say the room is small and not one says otherwise. The phrasing escalates: "compact", "not what you'd call roomy", "cramped is the word", "genuinely tiny", "narrow, and then narrower". One writes that shoulders brush and that some seats face each other, so you end up nodding at strangers; four mention catching the eye of the person opposite, one of them finding it faintly awkward. Whether that is the charm or the problem is where writers part. Several say the shared smell of the broth among strangers is exactly what an old drinking house is for, and that the huddling is the point. But one found it "loud enough that we couldn't hear each other, and people kept knocking into us on their way past". Five call it noisy; nobody calls it quiet. On party size, two suggest two or three people, and one warns that four or more may wait longer for a seat.
- The broth is unlimited and you ladle it yourself. With the pickled radish and soy comes a bowl for it — one writer's arrived with chopped spring onion already in. Four mention refills; one says they top it up before it can run out. One notes that they will add green chilli if you ask. And the broth is where this place divides people most. Against "sharp, well judged, I kept going back for it" and "I don't even like fishcake broth and this one is the real thing", there is "it tastes like convenience-store broth — surprisingly thin, no depth" and "most oden bars have killer broth; this has none, so come as a second stop and keep it light".
- In practice the seating is the ring around the oden pot. Eleven writers confirm a table exists; five of them add that there is exactly one — "the only table in the place", "just the four-top", "one ordinary table". The others say "a couple of tables" or "a four-seater at the back". So you rarely get to choose: two wanted the counter and were given the table, and one wanted the table and got the counter. One writer watched the owner move a party that was already seated over to the counter so that her group could have the table — "they looked a bit *what?* about it, understandably". The walls and ceiling are covered in customers' graffiti, which two writers note.

Parking
9 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.
| Posts saying you cannot | 9 of 24 posts |

Nine posts say there is no car park, and not one of those nine arrived by car. "No parking", "no car park of its own", "no dedicated spaces" repeat through the boilerplate at the top of these posts, and two advise checking a paid car park nearby beforehand — but nobody names one, and nobody says what they paid. We can count "there is nowhere to park at the shop" and no further. Getting here on foot, on the other hand, is very well documented: fifteen posts give exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga station, and put it at forty metres, one minute, two minutes, three minutes, "right outside", "practically on top of the station". This is not a place people drive to — it is a place they walk to after the first round, and six writers recommend it as a second or third stop.

Getting inside

No post says which floor it is on. None mentions stairs or a lift. Our licence record says ground floor, and one post's header carries "1F" after the address — but we cannot tell whether that writer saw it or copied it. What the posts do establish is that you walk in off the street. "Past the faded sign and the smell of the broth meets you first"; "if there are red plastic stools lined up under the sign, that is the door"; "a small place on the main road near the station". One writer says the red painted sandfish on the sign is how you know you have the right door: it is the only sandfish specialist around here.
Nobody writes about whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. In twenty-five posts, no ramp, no lip, no step, no lift. This is not a "no" — it is us not knowing. A few things the posts do say, for what they are worth. One mentions a narrow doorway; one that people kept bumping into her on their way past; one that shoulders brush at the next seat. Most of the seating is bar stools around the pot, with a single table. Waiting is done sitting on plastic stools on the pavement outside. That is the whole of what we can tell you.
Only two of the twenty-five posts mention the lavatory. Both say it is inside — one was relieved, having expected an old place like this to send her outside; the other adds that it is unisex and a single cubicle, "clean enough". So "unisex" and "one cubicle" are one person's word each. The first writer also notes that when the door opens you greet the entire room, which in a place this size is easy to believe. Nobody writes about an accessible lavatory or a step at its door.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 25 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Who comes here is written only one way. All nine writers who name their company came with friends. Not one post is by someone eating alone, on a date, or with a child. For a bar built almost entirely of counter seats it looks like a place to drink alone — but we have not read a post by anyone who did. Several recommend it to couples or to parties of two or three, but recommending is not the same as having come that way. What the posts do agree on is that with a two-hour limit — one hour if four or more of you take the single table — this is not a room for a long sitting in a large group.
- Not one post names a closing day. Thirteen of the fourteen that give hours list all seven days — but nobody actually writes that it never closes, so neither do we. Opening times agree completely: three in the afternoon Monday to Thursday, two at weekends. Closing times do not. Nine writers say one in the morning on Friday, three say midnight. Saturday splits the same way, nine to three. Sunday is midnight for nine and one in the morning for two. And one writer adds that they may close early if they run out of fish. Nobody mentions a last-order time or an afternoon break.
- No post here declares a comped meal. Four writers state they paid; the other twenty-one say nothing about it. The two posts we set aside are both round-ups written without going — a "top ten in Euljiro" and a "five places drinkers queue for" — in which this shop gets a sentence or two with nothing ordered and no price. The second one's headline, which invokes a celebrity's praise, is about a different restaurant on its own list, not this one. The name can confuse. The sign and the map entry say Euljiodeng, but writers also call it Euljiodeng Dorumuk and Bonga Euljiodeng Al-dorumuk. One post pins it down exactly: of all those names on the frontage, the trading name is Euljiodeng. They are all the same place.
- Twenty-five posts is not twenty-five people — we did not check whether any blog appears twice. And our window runs only from February to September 2026, so just two of these posts come from the winter, which is when sandfish is in season and when this place is most itself. Twenty-three were written in summer, several of them noting that the roe was full anyway and that they meant to come back in the cold. How long the queue gets in January, or whether the broth tastes different then, is not something these posts can tell you.
