YOUNG CHUN OK

영춘옥 Yeongchunok The -ok ending is the old suffix for a Korean eatery or house; yeongchun reads as 'welcoming spring', though no post gives the characters behind the name.

Compiled from 19 blog posts read in fullSources →

Yeongchunok is a gomtang (beef-broth soup) house in an alley near Jongno 3-ga station, at Donhwamun-ro 5ga-gil 13. It occupies a red-brick two-storey building with seating on both floors. For a meal there is gomtang at 13,000 won, haejangguk at 11,000 and oxtail soup at 29,000. To share with drinks there are beef bones ('ttagwi') at 45,000, braised oxtail at 58,000 and sliced beef at 30,000. Rice and thin noodles come on the side of the gomtang, and you serve yourself kimchi and radish from pots on the table. We read 30 posts dated 29 September 2025 to 20 October 2026. Nineteen describe eating there; the rest are multi-restaurant lists or posts about other places.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Kimchi and cubed radish sit in pots or earthenware crocks on each table, and you take what you want with tongs. Eight posts describe this; one went back for radish three times. Some found the cabbage kimchi strongly flavoured with fermented seafood, and one thought it fell short for a place this old.
  2. Price complaints centre on the braised oxtail. Four posts call the place expensive. Two of them ordered the oxtail and received four pieces for 58,000 won, which they worked out at about 14,500 won a piece. Another wrote that Australian oxtail should not cost this much. For the 13,000-won gomtang, one diner was fully satisfied. One post found the haejangguk fairly priced, and two reached no verdict. Three posts note that the menu board lists the beef as Australian.
  3. Three posts describe poor service. In August 2026, after the party knocked over a water jug, a server handed them a mop 'as if throwing it'. In March 2026, a diner was told the beef bones were out, then watched the next table get them. In October 2025, a diner gave up on the place over rudeness. No post we counted called the staff friendly.
  4. Four posts were written by couples and three by groups of friends; two came as larger parties, one with family and one alone. Three of the four couples had come to Jongno to shop for wedding rings.

  1. Five posts say it is an easy walk from the station. Two give about two minutes or 100 m from Jongno 3-ga exit 2-1, and two say about five minutes (one counting from Line 5, exit 6). The fifth simply calls it very close to the station.

From the station

Getting inside

Second floor11 of 19 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 19 posts read)

Seating is on two floors. Eleven posts mention the upstairs room, and several were sent up because the ground floor was full or because the owner told them to go up. One solo diner sat in a ground-floor corner. Two posts found the ground-floor tables a little cramped, and one described the upstairs as roomy.

No one mentioned a step at the entrance or wheelchair or stroller access. That means nobody wrote about it, not that access is fine or impossible. One post reaches the upstairs room by stairs, and none mentions a lift.

No post says whether the toilet is inside the restaurant or whether it is separated by gender.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 9 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Seasoning splits the posts. Three found the gomtang seasoned just right and added no salt. One, from August 2026, found it far too salty and asked for more broth.
  • The beef bones run out early. Two posts found them sold out, once on a Monday afternoon (October 2025) and once around 8:30 on a Sunday evening (March 2026). The '40 portions a day' figure is hearsay and unconfirmed. One post suggests phoning ahead (02-765-4237) if you want them. No post confirms whether the place takes reservations.
  • All 14 first-hand posts that give hours say it is open 24 hours, though most copy the listing. As first-hand evidence, one diner ate there at 2:44 on a Saturday morning and 1:18 on a Sunday morning. We don't know whether it stays open on holidays; one post copied a notice that it would close on Chuseok, 25 September 2026.
  • No post reports queuing. One heard there is usually a wait but found it quiet over Chuseok, one says any wait moves quickly, and one says there may be a wait at busy times, so the picture is unclear. One diner found it full at 2:44 on a Saturday morning. Three posts say food comes fast, in under ten minutes.
