Sushi Saikai

사이카이 Saikai Saikai is Japanese for 'reunion'; several posts say the chef explains the name at the end of the meal and says he hopes to see guests again.

Compiled from 27 blog posts read in fullSources →

Saikai is a sushi omakase counter in an alley in Donggyo-dong, near exit 2 of Hongik University Station. You sit at the bar while the chef makes each piece in front of you, and guests are seated at fixed times: 12:00 and 13:30 for lunch, 18:00 and 20:00 for dinner. Since December 2025 lunch is 60,000 won and dinner 120,000 won; before that it was 50,000 and 90,000. Many posts say even lunch runs close to twenty plates, from a potato soup through sushi, a fried course, noodles, tamago and a sorbet. We read 30 posts from November 2025 to October 2026; 27 are meals here, and 3 only linked to Saikai from posts about other restaurants.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Big portions are the most repeated point: 15 posts say they left stuffed, one 'fit to burst'. Some were surprised that lunch includes both a rice pot and udon. One dinner post from May 2026 read the same fact differently, recommending it to 'big eaters who care more about quantity than taste'.
  2. This is not a place you queue for; everyone is let in together at the set time. 12 posts mention a waiting spot by the entrance or inside the building, one with seats for about two parties, another noting it was indoors and cool. The door opens on the hour, and no one wrote about standing in line.
  3. Reservations are the norm: 14 posts say they booked, mostly through CatchTable. One got a seat the day before, another booked the same day.
  4. Every seat is at the counter: 11 posts describe a bar or dachi layout, and one notes there is no private room. Posts give the size as 8 seats, about 10, or 12. Several mention coat hooks and bag space behind the seats.
3 more
  1. Order a drink and a snack comes with it: 6 posts mention a salty, cracker-like fried spring-roll wrapper, and one says it was refilled. Yebisu on draft was 15,000 won a glass in an April 2026 post.
  2. 11 posts describe the chef's attention: he asks about rice and wasabi amounts, checks allergies first (one diner got scallop instead of raw shrimp), and turns the tamago into a candle-topped cake for anniversaries. A few posts from February and March 2026 mention being handed a hand warmer on the way out.
  3. It is easy to reach by subway: 10 posts walked from exit 2 of Hongik University Station, and those that timed it said 4, 5, 5 and 5 minutes. One missed the small sign in the alley and walked past.

Parking

1 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot1 of 27 posts

1 post described parking firsthand: the restaurant has none, so they used a paid lot nearby. Other posts copy 'no parking; use the DBM building or Yeonnam public lot' from map listings, though one copied listing says the opposite, 'up to 4 cars'. The nearby DBM lot was 1,500 won per 30 minutes, per one post.

From the station

It is easy to reach by subway: 10 posts walked from exit 2 of Hongik University Station, and those that timed it said 4, 5, 5 and 5 minutes. One missed the small sign in the alley and walked past.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 2 (of 27 posts read)
Step at the entrance3 of 27 posts
Toilet inside3 of 27 posts
Separate restroomsyes 0 · no 1 (of 27 posts read)

The entrance is up a few steps: 3 posts describe climbing several stairs, about half a floor above street level. It is not in a basement.

No one wrote about entering with a wheelchair or stroller. Posts mention steps at the entrance; nobody mentioned a ramp or elevator. That means no one wrote about it, not that there isn't one.

The restroom is inside: 3 posts say so, and one adds it is unisex and stocked with disposable floss, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Opinions split on fishiness: 10 posts said nothing tasted fishy, while 4 found a few pieces fishy.
  • Pacing depended on staffing that day: 2 posts found it slow and 2 said dishes came without a break. A February 2026 post says the chef was handling ten guests alone; a May 2026 dinner post waited another 15 minutes for the first plate because the previous seating ran late. An August 2026 post also mentions there was no assistant chef.
  • On seasoning, 1 post said plainly that everything was too salty, and 2 others found only a few dishes a little salty.
  • Prices went up in December 2025: earlier posts show 50,000 won for lunch and 90,000 for dinner, later ones 60,000 and 120,000. Drinks are extra; one couple paid 122,000 won including drinks. 1 post called it expensive and 2 called the price kind. Posts from spring 2026 mention a small automatic-payment discount and a 10% return-visit coupon.
  • The 'no kids' note comes from copied map and booking-app listings. No one wrote about going with children.
  • Hours appear the same in 15 posts, daily 12:00-22:00 with a 15:00-18:00 break, but every one is copied from map or CatchTable listings. Several posts say seating actually happens at four set times: 12:00, 13:30, 18:00 and 20:00. Only one post, again copying a listing, says there is no closing day.
  • The phone number 010-5746-9525 is copied into many posts. Most booked through CatchTable, and one suggests calling if the app shows no availability. One post from November 2025 copied a 30,000-won-per-person deposit; the rest copied a zero-won deposit.
  • The course changes with the seasons. Posts from May to August 2026 end with a cold green-tangerine udon, and posts from August 2026 on finish with basil sorbet; earlier posts describe a warm Inaniwa udon and celery sorbet. A rice pot joined the lunch course in posts from March 2026.
  • Posts cluster in February and March 2026 (four on March 16-17 alone), and two share a word-for-word identical info box. None discloses sponsorship, which doesn't prove there was any. 6 posts say they paid themselves.
