Busanjib
부산집 A forty-year-old charcoal grill in Donggyo-dong where live hagfish and freshwater eel are cleaned at the counter and cooked at your table.

Busanjib is a charcoal eel-and-hagfish grill on the main road through Donggyo-dong, a few minutes' walk from exit 1 of Hongik University Station. It opened in 1985 and is in its fortieth year, run by a grandmother who came up from Busan. Live hagfish, cleaned at the counter and grilled over charcoal, is so much the point that all eight posts we read ate it. Freshwater eel, conger and squid go on the same grill; cold buckwheat noodles and frankfurters are the sides. The room is a single ground-floor space of about 25 square metres, its wall hung with signatures of visiting celebrities. The posts we read run from January 2025 to September 2026. Take care finding it — there are four branches of an entirely separate izakaya chain called Cheolgil Busanjib around Hongdae and Mapo. This is not one of them. This is the charcoal grill at 18 World Cup-buk-ro.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- What every writer reaches for to separate this place from other hagfish grills is the same thing: it comes out of the tank and onto the fire. Four posts make a point of it — never frozen, never part-grilled in the kitchen first, the spine still in it — and two describe the roe bursting out as it cooks. Three posts raise the muddy smell hagfish is known for, and all three say this one has none. It is work to eat, though: one writer warns that the marinated version burns at the edges unless you keep trimming it on the grill.
- The grill sits on your table, but it is mostly the house that works it — three posts describe eel being laid on and turned for them. One adds that when the place is busy you grill your own, so expect to take the tongs at peak hours. Either way the order matters enough that several writers spell it out: freshwater eel first, hagfish later because it cooks in moments, and the first few pieces with salt only.

Parking
1 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

One person actually looked at the parking. A January 2025 writer reports one space in front of the shop and one behind — two cars. Another post contains the words "parking available," but that line sits inside a block of opening hours and takeaway notes copied wholesale from a listing, and the writer never says they drove. The other six posts do not mention parking at all. Whether it is still two spaces, whether it costs anything, whether there is a public lot nearby — we do not know.

Getting there

Getting inside
The register lists it on the ground floor, and the check-in address reads "18 World Cup-buk-ro, 1F." But not one writer mentions a step or a staircase — whether the door is level with the pavement, whether anything goes up or down inside. Nobody says there is an upstairs or a basement, and nobody says there isn't.
Nor does anyone write about the step at the door. Wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, threshold — none of those words appears once in the eight posts. Whether you can get in without a step, we do not know. If it matters, call 02-336-5523 before you go.
No post says a word about the toilet. Whether it is inside the room or out in the building, whether it is shared between men and women — nothing, across all eight. That is not an answer of "there isn't one." It means nobody wrote it down.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know
- The posts disagree about what this costs. Three lean expensive — "not cheap," "not light by today's standards," and a party of four who paid ₩137,000 for two sets and sides and came away unsure they would return at that price. One calls it good value and comparatively cheap — and that is the oldest post, from January 2025; the rest are from 2026. Whether the prices moved or the writers simply differ, the posts cannot tell us. The frankfurters flatly contradict each other: the writer who copied the board gives ₩3,000 for two, the writer who paid gives ₩12,000 for four.
- The place is changing hands. A customer returning after eight years wrote in February 2026 that the owner had turned eighty, had hurt her back in a fall, and had told him she would work until the middle of the year and then hand over to her daughter. Another February post and one from March also describe the daughter as the second generation, and the March writer found three generations in the room, granddaughter included. So the long talks with the grandmother that several of these posts are built around may no longer be on offer. The posts from May, June and September 2026 say nothing about who is running the room.
- Two different closing times are on record. Five of the eight posts give hours: three say 16:30–22:30 daily with last orders at 21:30, two say 16:30–23:00. The dates do not sort it out — the two saying 23:00 are the oldest post, from January 2025, and the newest, from September 2026, with the three saying 22:30 in between. All five agree on 16:30 opening. This is an evening-only place; arriving in the afternoon is a wasted trip. One post says it never closes for a holiday; none names a weekly rest day. All five copied an information panel — nobody reports reading the door.
- Only two of the eight write about getting here, and they agree: three minutes on foot from exit 1 of Hongik University Station, down towards Donggyo-dong from the big crossing below the university. One warns the sign is dim enough to walk past; another found the sign unlit altogether and assumed the place was shut. Not one post mentions a bus.
- Not one writer reports queuing. One found the room nearly empty, but was told by the owner it was because the sign had gone dark and people assumed they were closed — which says nothing about a normal night. Another advises allowing for a crowd at peak hours without saying they waited. Whether this is a place you have to wait for, we have no grounds to say. No post mentions booking either.
- Eight posts, eight people — no blogger wrote twice. None declares a sponsorship; three state they paid their own way and five say nothing either way. Two of the eight read differently from the rest: one is a long literary essay that works through five dishes with no price, no companion and no date; the other is a search-shaped piece with a table of contents that ends on "would I return? two hundred per cent." Both describe eating and so both are counted, but neither gives a single price. What we know about money comes from the two writers who reported a bill and the one who copied the board.
