불이아 홍대본점 Buria A hot-pot house behind Hongik University Station, on the same corner since 2002
Data as of · Published ·
Bulia is a hot-pot house in the lane behind exit 1 at Hongik University Station. It has the whole building — seats on both floors and a private room at the back — and several writers say it has stood on this spot since 2002. The sign carries only the Chinese characters 弗二我, with no Korean, and one visitor walked past it. Eleven in the morning to eleven at night, every day. You order by the set: meat, greens, mushrooms, noodles and the sauce bar together, with a choice of two broths from red, white and tomato. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart
- People come here because of Haidilao. Nine of the twenty-four name it, and five of those came here after giving up on the queue there — "sixty-three parties, a hundred and eighteen minutes", "already a two-hour wait at three in the afternoon", "failed at midnight sharp". Four compare the food: three say the broth is better here, one goes back to Haidilao for the service.
- It is built for groups. The restaurant has the whole building, seats upstairs and down, and a private room at the back; one post says the ground floor runs two to four and the first floor is mostly large tables. Writers turn up here for wedding-invitation gatherings, work dinners and family meals, and one recommends it for business. Three mention how far apart the tables are.
- You order from a tablet at the table and build your own dipping sauce. The sauce bar posts four recipes — sesame, soy, chilli, garlic — to copy or ignore. Four writers point out that it costs nothing extra, all four of them measuring that against Haidilao, where it is charged. The pickles, peanuts and chilli relish live at the same counter, so you fetch those yourself. Two posts say the staff will mix one for you if you ask.
- Accounts of the staff pull apart. Some found them warm, and say they will talk you through the sauces; but a regular on their fifth visit writes that they have never once felt looked after, busy night or quiet. One party was brought the wrong meat and had it swapped. What the staff do come over for is the candied sweet potato, which they set in iced water at your table — nobody comes to tend the pot, and one writer waited in vain before working out that the cooking is yours.
- How hot the red broth runs is the thing writers disagree about most. Five were caught out by it; three found it mild, one of them sending anyone who wants real numbing heat back to Haidilao. Two who cannot take chilli simply lifted out the spice canister in the middle, or asked for the top-up to be white broth on both sides — which is worth knowing: you can ask.
- Seven say they will come back; two record actually having done so. One of the two is on their fifth visit — the same person who finds the service cold — and the other returned on their own birthday to a place they had first been brought to by friends. Two name the candied sweet potato as the reason they will return.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | 5 of 23 posts |
|---|---|
| Toilet inside | 2 of 23 posts |
| Separate restrooms | 1 of 23 posts |
Nobody has looked at the step at the door. Across all twenty-four posts, the words wheelchair, pushchair, ramp, step and threshold never appear once. One writer mentions steps at the entrance in passing — as part of the décor — but does not say how many, or whether there is a way around them. This is not a statement that you cannot get in; it is a statement that no one has written it down.
The lavatories are inside, but they are on different floors. Two posts say they are in the building; one of them adds that the women's is on the ground floor and the men's is upstairs, so men have to climb. No one says whether there is an accessible lavatory, and no one describes the size or state of either.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 26 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Twenty-four, not thirty. Three of the thirty posts we collected are not about this restaurant: two are reviews of other places in Hongdae where Bulia appears only as a link card at the bottom, and one is a nationwide favourites list whose Bulia entry is the Yeoksam branch. Of the remaining twenty-seven we set aside three that are not accounts of a visit: a tips-and-recommendations piece with no price and no record of ordering anything, a round-up of someone else's favourite restaurants, and a Haidilao review that mentions Bulia in a single line. This name has several branches, so other branches drift in — counting by name alone inflates the number.
- Not one post declares a sponsorship. We read all twenty-four to the end, hashtags included, and the usual markers — "provided for review", "paid post", "gifted" — never appear. Nine state outright that they paid their own way; two say someone else did (an employer, and the coach they had just been running with). The rest say nothing about who paid.
- Getting here by train is the one thing everybody agrees on. One to three minutes on foot from exit 1 at Hongik University Station — "a block behind", "right out front", "the moment you turn into the lane" — all the same walk. Nobody arrived by bus. One writer nearly walked past because the sign has no Korean on it, so look for the red Chinese characters.
